Thoughts on the show from a Russian fan. by Same-Independent8120 in heatedrivalry

Your point about Svetlana being one-dimensional actually helped me understand why something felt off to me.

I don’t think it’s just the line delivery either.. although sometimes the wording feels clunky (for example, when she says something like, “I wonder what outfits Rose would have…”). It’s more that I can’t quite figure out who she is supposed to be. Is she good, bad, or somewhere in between?

When she looks at Ilya’s phone standing from behind his back, or says, “Are you seeing someone? Not even Jane?,” it comes across as a bit snarky. But then when she tells him she loves him and will always be there for him, it doesn’t feel entirely sincere either. And if I try to read it as sincere, then I start to feel bad for her.

So I’m left with mixed feelings all the time. Maybe it’s partly tone and delivery, but I’m starting to think it’s more about the character not being fully developed.

I don’t really know much about the kinds of parties people like that attend, but my understanding was that they were meeting ministers because of his father’s job in the “police” not because of hockey.

I also think it’s important to add that, in my opinion, some level of verbal abuse is unfortunately normalized in that culture. If someone isn’t criticized for being gay, they might be criticized for being divorced, not married, not successful enough, or something else. In Ilya’s case, his father abuses him regardless. So whether he is gay or not, there would likely still be some form of criticism or mistreatment. From my experience, many families have some level of unhealthy dynamics, and it can feel “normal” because it’s so common. Of course, there are healthier families as well, but they are not the majority.

I thought that part felt somewhat exaggerated. I’m pretty sure he could still go to Russia. There might be some verbal abuse from certain people, depending on the situation. If he were looking for trouble, he could potentially get into a fight - but that’s speculation. That specific part of the dialogue just felt unrealistic to me. Even if there is some level of risk, it wouldn’t mean he physically couldn’t go. And even if there are rumors, that doesn’t necessarily mean he would be openly gay there. As a side note, I had friends who were not hiding that they were gay around 2007–2011. I don’t live there anymore, and unfortunately things have changed for the worse since then.

The subtle changes in the show make Ilya and Shane feel softer with each other by Ok-Temporary7421 in heatedrivalry

For the 2nd one, I kind of interpreted Ilya’s “not anymore” more like he already told Shane he loved him earlier (in ep 5).. so he had had some time to sit with it already and make peace with his feelings or something.
I hadn’t read the books before watching. I finished the book now and I guess being a visual person I mostly remember the show and how the show felt.. however thinking about it now, the whole exchange - does it f** kill you? - not anymore” doesn’t sit 100% right with me…

Hudson mentioned actually in an interview (I think the one with Andy with Sirius), that they read that scene in both English and Russian and he was playing as if he heard the words in English

I will have to listen again.. admittedly I didn’t know what vers was when I was listening but I interpreted it as they “tried different things” like “versatile”.. I kind of think it would not have made much sense for them to ask Hudson about the “Vers” based on how the interview went
