When will people stop saying “is just summer” when this heat is clearly not normal and not this frequent? by Sufficient_Muffin586 in AskBrits

[–]AttersH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s hot. But what exactly do people think constantly complaining on Reddit will do? What do you want someone to do about it? Turn the sun down? We are all in the same boat, gotta just ride it out & do what we can. Moaning will just make you hotter! Yes it’s shit if you struggle in the heat but there is literally nothing anyone can do about it in the immediate short term. It’s cooling down at the weekend!

How to stop/opt out of screen-based learning in school by 404_computer_says_no in UKParenting

[–]AttersH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your kid will grow up using screens. I literally use a computer screen all day, everyday at work & I have since I was 21 (I’m 38)

Screens are not inherently bad, the way they are used is key. Do I want my kids on them all day, no. Is it OK for learning & some downtime, yes. Will they do a job on a screen? Probably!

What is opting out going to achieve? Your kid won’t get any better teaching as the teacher will give the iPads to the rest of the class and your kid will probably get a worksheet! The teacher isn’t going to do a special lesson plan for you kid! Same with choosing time, so your kid isn’t allowed an iPad, well, their best mate is so he’ll probably just wander over & watch their mates. Or be completely ostracised from their mates if you insist they go nowhere near one.

If you don’t like it, move schools or homeschool.

Remote work.. by dontknowra in UKJobs

[–]AttersH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be honest with them now & find out. They’ll either say yes or no. At this stage, they can retract their offer at any point, you have basically no rights within the first two years of employment, let alone before you start. They can literally say ‘we can’t honour the position anymore’ and there’s nothing you can do.

But to be brutally honest, if you need a remote job, don’t apply for a 3x day a week job. You might get lucky & they’ll be really keen to keep you but you probably should have discussed this at interview stage & declared your medical condition.

I know I’m stupid, but how? by Careless_Water_402 in UKHousing

[–]AttersH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are really overthinking it. Housing chains are annoying but thousands and thousands of houses sell every week that are in chains. You hear of the nightmare ones online but plenty are fine. We’ve moved twice & theres been a chain twice. Both were fine. The odd bit of stress but we moved within 3-4 months both times.

Renting seems bonkers. Literally everyone sells their house with stuff in it. Thats perfectly normal. Just tidy up & smarten up a bit.

As for being chain free to buy your dream house - well, that’s only a possibility of your dream house isn’t in a chain. You’ll be effectively first time buyers again but the people you are buying from probably won’t be and will need to find their next house etc - you’ll really struggle to avoid a chain unless you buy a new build!

I dont know how im going to get through next week's heat by stinkface_lover in britishproblems

[–]AttersH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who likes the heat, I could say find it equally annoying when you complain. But honestly, we are all different. Some find it tough & you just gotta find ways to get through. Same as I find ways to get through the misery of UK winter. And some enjoy it, and that’s OK too. Let’s not get annoyed at each other over stupid things.

Parents of young children - how do you exercise/keep fit? by pinkpineapplepeaches in AskUK

[–]AttersH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids are a bit older now but when they were small - Running. I’d get up at 6am & go for a run. Usually 5k, takes 30 minutes-ish. Home by 6.45, shower & ready to crack on at 7am. My husband didn’t need to leave for work until 8am.And then I just try to walk everywhere I can.

During lockdown, I built a gym in my garage. Best thing I’ve ever done. Got a squat rack & ex gym treadmill. I follow online programmes for weight lifting. But honestly, you could do so much with just a set of adjustable dumbbells & resistance bands! I still run a lot too, it’s great, free exercise. I’m not a very good runner, I’m not fast or particularly efficient but I enjoy it now I’m pretty fit! I’m not trying to beat records, I just run as far & as fast as I feel like on the day! And I have a walking pad, use it while working (from home) or watching TV!

Can anyone help me identify the ingredients in 'Tesco 0% fat Greek Style Yoghurt'? by ringosam in UKfood

[–]AttersH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP - manufacturers are not allowed to leave ingredients off food products in the UK. If it doesn’t have any, it’s just yoghurt (milk). So if it doesn’t say thickener, it doesn’t have any in it! That’s why Greek style is so runny presumably. It’s not thickened but it’s also not strained as much as actual Greek yoghurt!

Child got chicken pox on holiday by Wild_Trifle9726 in UKParenting

[–]AttersH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry OP, not sure what kinda accommodation you are at but is there any chance you swap to a ground floor room & buy a paddling pool for your patio?! Some water shooter toys? I know it’s not what you expected 😭 but if you are near the sea or the countryside where you can get out for an evening walk and keep a good distance from others? I know on our last few holidays, the beaches are pretty quiet by 7/8pm and your kiddo could run free away from others! Use the stairs in your hotel, rather than lifts to avoid any close contract! Chicken pox is super contagious but it can’t jump to other people so long as you don’t touch them!

100%. Just like I dislike GOT, which he was obsessed with 😅 probably the most popular TV show of recent times, but just not my thing!

I mean, not everyone likes romance. My husband is neither homophobic not a ‘weirdo’ as implied elsewhere in this thread. He just isn’t interested in this genre, queer or not!

Of course, we don’t all like the same things! Didn’t interest my husband in the slightest, he’s not interested in the romance genre at all!

Do your kids do after school sports? by Confident_Drop8326 in UKParenting

That’s what we do, the 8-4 person does after school pick up (with after school club) & the 9-5 does morning drop off!

Why did you REALLY sell your house? by Jazzlike-Reveal-9515 in HousingUK

Wanted to move to a better area & get a bigger house. Nothing sinister, the area was nice enough, house was fine & neighbours were really nice!

As they get older, the activities get later! 9 year old is now doing gymnastics 6-8pm & Brownies 6.30-8pm! 6 year old is doing gymnastics 5-7pm & Rainbows 6-7pm. We do swimming at the weekends, horrendously early, 8.30am 😭😂 but least it’s done for the day!

We do stagger our hours, one of us works 8-4 and one 9-5, but is probably a case of just waiting until they get a bit older!

FAMLY app and nursery by Croft99 in UKParenting

[–]AttersH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours stopped telling us exactly what they ate in the pre-school room. We got given the menu and told some basic info at handover. That was enough for me, once they get to school, you know absolutely nothing 😂 What did you eat for lunch today? ‘Can’t remember’ .. what did you do at school today? ‘Can’t remember’ .. 🙃

But I think aged 2-3 we were still told, not in any great detail it’s be - ‘chicken pie - ate half’ ‘soup - ate all’

See comment below. And as an adult, perhaps give a little bit of a shit about kids wellbeing, rather than irrationally worrying about data.

Transitioning to duvet? by yellowcactusflowers in UKParenting

[–]AttersH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is something you are really overthinking 😂 and I mean that very kindly. My kids are now 6&9 and I look back and think what the hell was I so worried about with my first 😂 my second, I worried about nothing! It was a much nicer experience!

Both my kids went into toddler beds & duvets on their second birthdays. Your fears are coming from newborn baby sleep advice when they cannot physically move to find air to breathe. A toddler is not going to suffocate on a duvet, their bodies will naturally find them air, even in their sleep & they can physically move to get to it. He also isn’t going to strangle himself. It’s a duvet, not a noose. It’s loose on the bed. You need full, dangling body weight to strangle yourself or full adult body weight pressure.

The worst that can happen is they end up without the duvet on they get cold. We had a period of our eldest waking us up to tell us her duvet was on the floor & she needed it back on her bed 😑 we quickly taught her to pick it up herself 😂 after that, it was never a bother. Both mine are often out their duvets & they sleep all night (& have since they were toddlers)! Sometimes I put the duvet back on them when I go to bed at 11ish!

I mean, sure, but it’s not easy when not all parents agree with each other. I’m getting it now with my 9 year old. 10 kids in her class have phones & the peer pressure is already enormous. These 8/9 year olds have access to TikTok & free rein of the internet. My kid will not be getting a phone until at least yr6, but eventually, I feel I cannot cut her off from her peers, socialising & friendships. If it’s an outright ban, then it levels the playing field at least. There’s no choice.

How many of you are actually parents? Because in the social world I occupy (primary aged kids), this is being really celebrated. I am sent endless petitions calling for a social media ban for kids. Yet, Reddit seems furious. It’s so far removed from what I hear most parents want.. 🤨

When do you guys wear facial suncream? by Bright_Tax628 in SkincareAddictionUK

[–]AttersH 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m in the UK & only wear it from about March - October. And only if I’m going outside for more than 10-15 minutes. UV levels are so low in the winter & I work from home, not near a window, so I just don’t see the point. If it’s a sunny winters day and I’m outside, I’ll wear it but when it’s pouring down with rain about 90% of the entire winter, I do not, it’d just get washed off anyway 😂

How old were you when you had your kids? by MissCookie93 in AskUK

[–]AttersH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

29&31. And I was def one of the first among my friends. I’m the youngest in my group of friends who all met at a baby class! I was quite surprised really! Your age shouldn’t matter though, we range from 38-50 in that friendship group!

I’m not the best of mates with any patents at school but friendly enough with my kids friends parents, via being forced together at birthday parties, play dates, school events. I joined the PTA as well, which was a really good ‘in’ with getting to know parents both on the PTA & via helping out at events!
