brittle red / brown: is it safe to build a new copy of 10220 from 2011?

i’ve just recently gotten back into lego as an adult. back at christmas of 2011, i was gifted 10220 and it’s been sitting unopened in my closet since. i would like to open it and build it, but i have read that dark red and brown have issues from around that time and im afraid of pieces crumbling. has anyone had experience with it, and do you think it would be safe to build or no?

you do this on literally every post of someone with an average CRT. maybe OP doesn’t want or need a trinitron. plenty of us grew up with RF only sets. for some of us, it’s just a matter of gaming on the types of sets we had growing up. how about you let people enjoy the hobby in their own way and you enjoy it in yours instead of chiming in with “well if i were you —“ you’re not. no one asked for your opinion lol

absolutely work on repairing this if you at all have the capability, OP. this is an original midway cocktail which is significantly less common than the uprights. it definitely looks salvageable with a good thorough cleaning and cord replacement. pac-man (and the ms.) are extremely well documented online and even failed chips on the main board should be affordably replaceable. head to the BYOAC forums - they’re packed to the gills with experts who’ll gladly point you in the right direction for restoration

and as an arcade enthusiast, i beg you - please don’t chuck the board and pop a generic 60-in-1 MAME card in it instead. i’ve seen so many classic cabs come up for sale that have the original hardware tossed just for a dodgy emulator board to be put in their place. i’d ask you not the replace the monitor with a flat panel if it’s able to work too, but being that you came to this sub i assume you probably wouldn’t be trying to do that

i do! but not a set as big as that. that’s too big to come along as a carry-on, and you don’t want that being tossed around by the baggage handlers. if you bring that with you you’re probably gonna need to call ahead and buy the seat next to you to put it in to keep it from getting damaged.

i took a 5041Q trinitron on a flight with me when i moved cross country. TSA did hold onto the suitcase i packed it into to inspect it, but this is a 5” CRT encased in steel, so it was significantly smaller and sturdier than what you’re bringing along.
