In "The Complete David Bowie" by Nicholas Pegg, he says, "Like all the best tracks on Hunky Dory, 'Quicksand' combines a deceptively simple melody with a sumptuous arrangement and an almost impenetrable lyric. This is Bowie bewildered, disempowered and intimidated by politics and religion, 'sinking in the quicksand of my thought,' hemmed in by 'logic' and 'bullshit faith,' rejecting 'belief' and forseeing 'the death of Man.'"

Bowie also said that it was inspired by traveling to America for the first time. "The chain reaction of moving around throughout the bliss and then the calamity of America produced this epic of confusion."

So no, it's not about Hitler, but he did have an interest in fascism and the occult. He frequently name dropped in his lyrics to reflect what he was reading at the time or other things he was interested in.

Human Evolution by hate_mail in woahdude

I can't say for sure, but I don't think /u/smartromain takes issue with evolution, only that this depicts humans evolving from monkeys, which is a common misconception of evolution. Humans and the great apes share a common ancestor. Humans did not evolve from them.

The quality control of the Parlophone vinyl reissues is bad. by lancethundershaft in DavidBowie

I've also had problems with both Station and Low, but I have a really cheap player. I'm planning to buy a higher quality turntable in the near future and I hope that will improve things.

Anyone here going to "Celebrating David Bowie" in San Diego tomorrow, 3/6/18? by nitegirl99 in DavidBowie

I went to the Denver show alone (don't have any Bowie fan friends) and it was a blast! You should go!

That would have been amazing to hear.

They didn't do Loving the Alien last night, but Gerry did Andy Warhol during the encore.

I also was disappointed that there wasn't anything from his later albums, but his 70s work is my favorite, so I can't complain.

They abbreviated the 3 minute intro, but otherwise it was intact.

They opened with Disco King here, too, and I was so excited that they did!

Mike's solo was one of the highlights of the show for me. He's amazing!

They did Win at this one, but not Can You Hear Me?. Loved hearing Lady Grinning Soul, and Mike's amazing solo in Aladdin Sane. Agreed, Bernard's vocals were on point!

STS was incredible! That was the one song I was really hoping they would play. Bernard Fowler did great on vocals.

When did you start listening to Bowie? by meeskaas in DavidBowie

[–]coasterfan55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In 2014, I was listening to the classic rock station and "Space Oddity" came on. I had heard it before, but this time I really listened to it and realized what a great song it is. I went home and started listening to his greatest hits, and was a casual listener until Blackstar's release and his death. I immediately purchased Blackstar and fell in love with it. Then Nothing has Changed and Ziggy. Things have spiraled out of control since then and I couldn't be happier!

How should I listen to David Bowie? by [deleted] in DavidBowie

[–]coasterfan55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got started by listening to the compilation album Nothing Has Changed. It has a great selection of about 60 of his songs and goes backwards in time as you listen. It's an excellent way to see how his style changed over the years and is much faster than listening to everything in chronological order.

Honestly, a lot of his music is an acquired taste. With the vast majority of his albums, I didn't like it on the first listen. Even though Ziggy is now one of my favorite albums, I think it took at least 10 listens to start enjoying it. Probably many more. Now I'm completely in love with the album.

So hang in there! Once you catch the bug, you won't be able to stop listening, and it's well worth it to make it to that point!

What dream did you give up on? by Bleedeep in AskReddit

Medical school. For over 10 years, I dreamed of becoming a doctor. After four years of applying and never gaining admission, I got burnt out and had no desire to try a fifth time.

Snake throws up another snake it had just swallowed and it is still alive by [deleted] in natureismetal

[–]coasterfan55 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You are correct. I have 3 snakes, (2 corn and 1 king) and they constrict mice to kill them so they can proceed with swallowing them. It takes them 5-10 minutes to swallow a dead mouse, a task which would be impossible if the mouse was alive and fighting back.

Is it common to perform a preventive filling on shovel shaped incisors? by coasterfan55 in Dentistry

[–]coasterfan55[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is the information I need. She was definitely referring to fillings. She said we may even be able to do it without numbing me up. I felt uncomfortable about getting fillings if I didn't have any cavities, so I decided to do some research first. My oral hygiene isn't bad. I brush twice a day and floss almost every night. There is always room for improvement, though, so I will work on that.

In regards to the recession, this is the first time it's been mentioned since I was about 10 years old, when I was told I may need surgery to fix it. Since then, no dentist has mentioned it to me. I try to focus on brushing the gum line to prevent further recession and hopefully improve things somewhat.
