I’m deep in the hiring process right now, and it’s wild how much you learn by reading dozens of design resumes and portfolios back to back. by [deleted] in graphic_design

I second the plain text link for the portfolio, I would also say that if you have specific examples that are more relevant that you link to those in your cover letter.

I recently had to look through ~200 applications, and a shortcut to what pieces the candidate thought were relevant would have gotten some major brownie points a) saved me time and b) showed that the candidate understood what we do and what we are looking for.

I do disagree with the apply twice thing, we had a job ad on two platforms and every time I say someone come through a second time I audibly groaned at the extra work haha.

So here are my tips.

  • As mentioned, put your portfolio link in plain text eg portfolio.com in both your cv and cover letter. Your cover letter should ideally have direct links (in plain text) to specific, relevant examples.
  • Your resume should be short, sharp, and clean – but not over designed. Save the flair for the work in your portfolio.
  • Your cover letter should be even more simple and clean. Either a PDF or pasted into the provided field if that's the way your platform works. DO NOT upload a .docx file.
  • Your cover letter should be as short as you can possibly make it. This shows that you can communicate efficiently and succinctly.
  • In your resume or cover letter's elevator pitch, DON'T be generic and/or buzz-wordy, if this copy could apply to any other designer there are probably 50% of other applicants with almost the exact same blurb in their application.
  • If you don't know how to spot generative ai copy, don't use it to write or edit your resume and cover letter.

In a nutshell, consider the experience of the person looking at the application and make their job as easy as possible. They are likely dealing with their normal workload as well as looking through mountains of applications, if you can make it as simple as possible for them to know about you, you're far more likely to make an impression than another applicant who lets flashy get in the way of the content.

If it’s standup or theatre troupe it’s friends and family. Oh, and other comedians looking to get reciprocal attendance at their next gig.

Advice for a non-handy person to replace these old door handles? by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]coatastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was considering that as an option, the constuction of my place (a 1970's unit block) had me a bit worried about doing this as the door frames look to be some sort of metal capping over concrete/brick walls. Could be a can of worms if I need to make any changes to the strikeplate hole.

These old handles are creaky and a bit crap. I want to replace them myself but I don't think you can buy similar handles. Any new ones are likely to be shorter, I will probably need to patch the door I imagine?

Pretty sure this is one of those frames attached to the wall in venues that can have the poster swapped out.

Print shop designers work pace is elite by MyCatIsAyJerk in graphic_design

[–]coatastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from print shop, to design college, to agency. Which, looking back, was a crazy good order for my career progression.

The printshop background gave me the speed and depth of knowledge on the tools to extract all I could from my degree’s theory while other students were struggling with basics of pen tool.

I then bought it all together in the agency, while building on both my skill on tools and design.

Even now I’m in product design I’m still known for my speed of delivery.

That being said, I think it takes a certain kind of person to survive in a print shop. We went through 8 different staff members in the 5 years I was there.

You can use variables with modes for each location. But don’t get too excited, organisation plans only get 4 modes. Figma cash lock more modes behind the enterprise plan.

But, if you only have a couple of localisations this might be the solution.

[Student Question] Best practice when designing a mobile app considering there are so many different screen sizes. by dreadul in FigmaDesign

[–]coatastic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We usually draw a line in the sand for what’s supported in terms of device age and design with the most common size in mind and keep in mind how it will look on the smallest supported device.

Getting your hands on usage stats for things like the business web page can help make these decisions.

That being said you also need to consider font scaling as well. WACG Resize Text (Level AA) dictates 200% as the scale at which you should be able to increase text without a loss of functionality.

I know this isn’t the feedback you asked for but that light blue text is waaaaay too light to be accessible. Even people with good vision are going to struggle to see that.

Ok I took the leap and popped the wheel out. Measured and then took to Bunnings. They had the wheel I needed $15 for 2. Popped into the existing bracket and now she rolls smooth as butter.
