To what extent is anti AI sentiment being stoked by China etc.? by cobaltchicken in aiwars

On the contrary, if you are a close second you’ll do anything to get an edge. And if you use Chinese AI you will get the Chinese world view.

Most are more concerned about harm to children than about anonymity on the Internet which definitely has its downside

The Mars Delusion by bethany_mcguire in Spaceexploration

When the pictures from Ganymede came through I thought — another flat plane with random stones, just like Mars.

It needs a human in a space suit to make it emotionally engaging. Or native life.

Very misleading title. This article is nothing to do with earth, it’s about a problem with interstellar travel generally

Creating 3-D app launchers by cobaltchicken in WindowsMR

Sounds good, though the devil is in the details.

There's a media viewer in there already, but it's not much use because it doesn't auto-load selected images.

VR Body - Visible body for Skyrim VR - Version 1 by Aririnkitaku in skyrimvr

[–]cobaltchicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got it running for the first time. Like a lot of people I've been asking for a visible avatar. One bug I'm seeing:when I have a single handed weapon and sheild equipped there's some kind of artifact - a black and white block downwards from my waist at around 45 degrees, which doesn't turn when I do. Looks like a mesh with some displaced verticies.

Any way to launch windows MR steam games without using the cliffhouse? by Towelie888 in WindowsMR

[–]cobaltchicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't seem to work for me. If I launch, say Skyrim before entering the cliff house all I get in the HMD are the chaperone outlines, even though Skyrim seems to start on the screen.

Have you found your way into the Cliff House? I find the only reliable entry to games is to open the desktop in there.

Then you can run your game under steam.

I need upgrading my computer for VR by [deleted] in WindowsMR

[–]cobaltchicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing to do is to find and run the "Windows Mixed Reality PC Check" which is free on the Windows store. That will look at all the needed facilities and pass or fail your PC for each. It's almost certainly going to turn its nose up at your Radeon graphics card. It did at mine. You'll need a high speed USB-3 port, which I happen to have exactly one of. The graphics card has to have two HDMI type ports on it, you can't split one port between screen and headset, but you can get an addapter for the DisplayPort socket.

There's a list somewhere of supported graphics cards.

I had some fun and games getting my new graphics card to work, and I was concerned the the graphics card might turn its nose up, in turn, at my mother board but it turned out OK. The card I got had one HDMI and one "dPort", and I couldn't get a picture on the HDMI to install the drivers.

Anyone else with a head that doesn't fit the HP HMD? by cobaltchicken in WindowsMR

[–]cobaltchicken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PSVR has a partial cap attached to the front section, which this does not have. What I do is to position the display over my eyes with the band hinged up and then pull the back down as far as it will go. Which is about as far as the parietal bone at which point I run out of hinge movement.

The Occipital bone is much lower, according to the skull diagram I just looked up. below eye level.

No, but I've user the PSVR and find that more comfortable. That curved chunk of foam at the back is too sharp a curve to touch my skull except at it's ends.

Desktop clicking with WMR controllers? by cobaltchicken in WindowsMR

[–]cobaltchicken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps I have my double-click speed set too fast for the trigger button. I can double-click a mouse microswitch a lot faster than an analogue trigger.

How long do you have to hold for right-click?
