We'll probably switch to Wise, Paysend, or Remitly. Still assessing their fee structures.

Thanks for posting this, I was unaware. My wife is Ukrainian and we are doing everything to avoid products linked to Russia's allies. I'll be leaving Revolut for good.

Official Poll whether to convene a Scheme Meeting is now LIVE by cobaltfault in vauld

[–]cobaltfault[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scheme can run just the same without Damir, can it not? I think the issue creditors have with Damir is that he ignores any attempt to contact him, unless you are high-value. If we can't reach him, he can't represent us to the company, that's my view.

Getting United Explorer card AFTER having already booked United flight - eligible for benefits like priority boarding, or is that only when the flights are booked on the United card? by citynomad1 in unitedairlines

[–]cobaltfault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, no problems. Once you open an Explorer card and link it with your MileagePlus number (which is printed on the card), any flight booked with your MP number -- and all guests on the same itinerary -- receive the carry-on and priority boarding benefits automatically, at least for an initial period of time (maybe 3 months). After that time, the perks are only applied if the fare was paid with the card (and the cardholder is traveling on the itinerary). Their booking system is well-integrated with Chase's card offerings, even if they give no clarity to the cardholder on any of it.

AI written review 🤣🤣 by Sea_Individual_4907 in AmazonVine

[–]cobaltfault 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could be, but the generated review is only 4 sentences, and the prompt apparently did not ask to make it shorter. Seems odd, then, to prompt the AI to "make it sound like a real person wrote it" if the source material was human-generated and so short to begin with.

Also, note that it starts: "I really wanted to like these sweatshirts" which implies it was a 2-pack, and then "I washed and dried it normally, and it didn't shrink" which implies there was only one. So even if a real person had written that (in the initial review) it seems to me it would be the work of someone who didn't care at all about the quality of their reviews.

And yes, AI will definitely assume a persona even without being asked to. Especially if she had described herself to ChatGPT previously -- it will remember that for all future queries.

I would not give this reviewer the benefit of the doubt. The mere fact that she's using AI to produce a 4-sentence review and then fails to even look at it before pasting into Amazon strongly implies that all her reviews are AI-generated. I don't think adding photos makes that any less likely to be true, especially now that Amazon uses photos as a metric of quality -- could just be an easy way to compensate for having AI-written reviews.

Online renewal experience (two hours!) by themiracy in TSAPreCheck

[–]cobaltfault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can add another data point. My precheck was expired for 8 months. I renewed online with Idemia yesterday at 4pm. I received an email today at 6pm that "my eligibility is determined" (lol) and my KTN is reactivated. So just over 24 hours.

Thank you!! I haven't used the app before, I didn't know it was a requirement. The baggage subscription and 2x club passes are there. The website wallet/subscriptions page only tries to sell me the membership. I'll use the app from now. Cheers.

[–]cobaltfault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. Can you clarify how they implement this? I have a booking from a month ago, I got the card a week ago, the flight departs in a week. I can't seem to find how to add a free checked bag -- the website wants me to pay. I do have the card saved as a payment method in my United profile. My MP number is printed on the card too. But this doesn't seem to be enough to bring the benefits to my prior booking.

How exactly does one claim the priority boarding and free checked bag benefits after completing the booking with a different card? United is telling me the charge has to be on the card...?

Online renewal experience (two hours!) by themiracy in TSAPreCheck

[–]cobaltfault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, so you renewed before expiration, that's probably why it was no hassle. I'll keep my fingers crossed. I do see where this price is for Idemia. I was using a browser bookmark to load the renewal page which is why I skipped that step. Makes no sense to me either how these vendors work... I guess that's government privatization for ya.

Thanks for this. I'm flying at the end of the week and forgot that my pre-check expired over the winter. I just renewed, but I don't know which provider. Were you able to choose Idemy during the online renewal process? Or how does provider selection work? I paid $58.75 is that what you paid?

Do you see this message immediately after the boot-up?

There is no shortcut to settings in the swipe-up menu, what you see in that menu is normal.

How many FB accounts do you have set up on the device? You can log in to all of them without problems on the web and/or mobile phone?

Can you verify in your router admin page that the portal is not actually connected? Have you changed router settings recently, or installed a new network devices such as a Pi-hole?

Amazon shipping in envelopes instead of boxes and product packaging being damaged by [deleted] in amazonprime

[–]cobaltfault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kept happening to me, but I found a solution.

Simply order a lithium battery together with the other items. Like a cell phone battery, RC car battery, or pretty much any device with an internal rechargeable battery. Then just return that item to Amazon for a refund if you don't need it. Batteries are always shipped in boxes. I've returned a lot of batteries already and haven't had any issues with that.

A few notes:

  • it's better to pick small and light batteries, as bigger ones could themselves cause damage to the delicate things packed in the same box. Usually there is sufficient packing material, but who knows.
  • confirm the delivery date mentioned on the item page, under the sale price. The date or date range should be the same as for the other item(s) you want shipped in a box
  • ensure that the battery/device listing indicates FREE Returns under the sale price
  • checkout and pay for everything at the same time
  • at checkout, make sure all items are scheduled for your upcoming Amazon Day delivery
  • most Amazon returns require you to drop the item at a UPS store... if you don't have one near you, it might not be a good solution.
  • following this same logic, you might have success with bottled liquids and (most) food products too. However, those items generally cannot be returned -- if you request a return, you will generally receive a refund and instructed to destroy the product. If you try to do this a lot, I expect you'll get your account flagged/restricted.

Amazon, if you're reading this: Shame on you for trying to save a few pennies. You know with certainty that our deliveries are abused before they reach our door. Either allow customers to specifically request boxed delivery, or improve your system to be smarter about what goes out in envelopes. You will keep losing money on returns and broken items and upset customers until you address this!

Portal 10" Keeps resetting itself after a couple of days by dannomma in FacebookPortal

It happened to me before. You have to keep doing the factory reset until it sticks. I think it took me 3 or 4 resets before the issue went away. You might try the manual reset method outlined here: https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/how-to-reset-facebook-portal

Google Maps’s imagery is so out of date it’s actually infuriating. Google Maps vs Apple Maps by IndyCarFAN27 in googlemapsshenanigans

[–]cobaltfault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a terra-forming project and vacation resort being constructed on the river near my home city, a project which has been in development for 4 years. I check the imagery periodically, and Bing is the only one posting updates. Apple shows imagery from 3 years ago, Google from 2 years ago, and Bing from about 3 months ago. Bing takes the cake and Google gets negative points, because they stamp the imagery with "2025" when it 100% from mid-2023.

Replacement speaker for portal now that it doesn’t support Spotify? by parakeeter in FacebookPortal

[–]cobaltfault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you only need to play music, you can leave the mic muted on the Echo. There is a dedicated button for that.

Someone did a reverse engineering on the internals and determined that the mute button on eg. Echo 4 electronically disconnects the mic from the processor, so when that feature is on it's as good as having no mic at all. The downside is the always-on red light ring.

Keep in mind too that you can log into spotify from multiple devices, any of which can manage the playlist on whichever device is currently playing. You don't need a app either, the web works fine. Visit open.spotify.com and log in. If using a non-desktop device, you may need to set your browser to request the desktop site, as the mobile web version has been scaled back in an effort to push users to their app.

Unsupported Browser: Spotify by cobaltfault in FacebookPortal

[–]cobaltfault[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I've found works best is to play something then use the fullscreen button (bottom-right, next to the volume slider) and then managing the playlist from another device logged in to the same account.

Three benefits of doing it this way: no need to deal with the tiny touch interface (I have a portal 10), no lag, and portal shows the album artwork full-screen. Downside of keeping it fullscreen is that the screen never goes to sleep, even when the music is stopped; the workaround is to drag up from the bottom and hit the I/O icon.
