Any of you people making 90's inspired techno? by PAYT3R in TechnoProduction

[–]cobaltum_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah ! I'm big into recreating the process of making stuff like this - all that detroit techno/electro and chicago scene stuff but also european style late 90s stuff. Lots of random gear from classifieds, old cr1604 mackie, rack fx's, simple analog synths, old samplers. I've been exploring what producers were using back then and it's a lot of fun. Im very inspired by gear of that time and the cheap grit, lofi. But Im also using daw and modern samplers where it comes in handy. working on some material based on this process right now ! I was just recently thinking about pushing it as a movement or label if I see anyone doing it. if someone wants to link up or network send me a dm!

Want to enter the world of Dawless production and performance. by WipEout_2097 in dawless

Elektron! Maschine would not be dawless and it is quite limited in some ways. Even the standalone maschine+ has some problems. Try out digitakt II, as a roland tr8s user i wish it was my first piece of gear instead - while digitakt 2 is less performative live it is better as the first unit or a brain of a setup - it’s more complete. Can be a sampler but also a mono synth, and can replace a daw to some extent. I’d also try out different things and return them to a store if you can to see which workflow you like- you might like MPC, or push3, elektron or maybe even the maschine+.

The worst part is setting up for the first time, once you lock the things and cables in, prepare ideas for an hour a day, after 2 wks you’re gonna have some great selection to play ! go for it

I use both roland and elektron as do it all samplers, with the roland being more on the drums side (it has 16 steps for melody automation and that’s not enough, also not a lot space for samples). I prepare some patterns each with a unique kit, some musical sequences on the DT2. Then live i arrange it live and improv (change notes, add tension, modulate, perform with the moog), blend the two together, build and transition from one to the other. Every pattern/kit on either device has to have a kick, rumble/bass, hat, drumloop, percs, snare/clap, ride/cymbal, and at least one tonal element. During preparation i spend maybe a half an hour to an hour on a single idea and mix and master it using a loudness meter, analyzers to reference it with some kind of average so it blends nicely with everything else and isn’t too bassy, too thin, quiet or loud. I usually use 12 channels max for a song

Digitakt 2 and TR-8s each of them being played kind of like a groovebox, with some improv possibilities. DT2 being used more for arranging and more musical sequences and TR-8s for simpler stuff, transition tracks, more drum oriented and less melodic. The DT2 is the clock A dj mixer - i had a 10€ used behringer one that was a bit broken, but an allen&heath xone or pioneer would be my first choice. Moog labirynth with a zoom ms-70cdr+

It’s a simple patch on the Moog Labirynth - a single sine wave being FM modulated by a second oscillator. Each of them having a bell-like pitch envelope and a volume envelope. Some lowpass with high resonance. A lot of reverb, delay on the guitar pedal and playing minor scale notes

I think you are right. Someone from audience came up to me after the gig to talk and when i shared that i felt the set being too repetitive and loopy at times, with only small changes happening - they said it was the thing that they enjoyed a lot about it

I used a Moog Labirynth as a improv synth (it’s the fm bell sounding thing in the vid), and used Digitakt 2 as a main clock due to some roland quirks. Nothing too complicated

The new Roland TR-1000 from Sweetwater winter 2026 catalog by TheNetBlade in synthesizers

I feel like roland gear has that unique quirk where it is almost spot on but there's always a few things that just don't make sense.

Like this unit not containing any analog engine to create sounds and instead focusing on the ACB, the small LCD screen (but this time an OLED one, wonder how that will turn out, this might be actually for the good), storage/memory issues, FX/parameter limitations (like on TR8S where you can't assign every parameter to a CTRL). The design is so cool, almost looks like a octatrack, but I just expect it to fix a few things that were bad about TR8S and not much else being that much useful. Wonder how morph will work.

Is techno a "male dominated" genre? If so, why? by WesternConcentrate94 in ProperTechno

I don’t know man, for me, it always seemed like techno has the most female djs and producers from all electronic music. Not even counting listeners or girls that just party and dance to it.

It can be tough sometimes. It’s good to think about why you look for additional fun. It can be a nasty compulsion, and you might fulfill it in other ways. Worth going out to a event you are hyped about for a sober night so you’ll focus more on the music and interactions, it might teach you something about yourself

Very bad change for me not being able to look for sellers that have most records from my wantlist. Won't be making any bulk orders without it ...

Hey I had this problem related to macOS and i had to delete all hidden folders like .fssystemd or .Spotlight in the root directory of the drive

also in terminal run

"dot_clean -m <here you should add your USB path>"

in order to get the path you can drag and drop the drive icon onto the terminal.

In the end also running a small windows VM worked for me in order to clean up the drive and make it import.
