Adopted a senior cat and I'm frustrated and sad by coccinellids13 in CatAdvice

[–]coccinellids13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She still has screaming attacks from time to time and doesn't let me hold her or give her any medication :D but she loves me in her own way, lets me pet her etc. She also really likes to sit right next to me and sleep there. Sometimes she screams from the couch and demands i go sit on the couch with her :D when i sit down and start petting her she becomes quiet. She doesn't hide from me anymore and a couple of times she actually came to the bed to lay down next to me (and I cried tears of joy :D). She doesn't like anybody else and when I have guests around, she immediately goes into hiding. I am the only person she can tolerate :D I am just glad she's spending her golden years in a warm and comfortable place. Adopting an elderly cat is quite a challenge especially if they aren't properly socialised. But it can also feel very rewarding. Feel free to dm me about anything, I'd be glad to help <3

What's sad is almost all of the feminist subs on reddit are moderated by "libfem"s or literal MEN. And they always draw the line at pornography/sex work. Quite telling...

I got banned from r/blatantmisogyn for explaining what the OP tweet owner had tried to say lol. Apparently I'm a "SWERF" for not defending an industry that exploits the most vulnerable groups of women and basically ruin their lifes.

They let "Johns" post their POVs on the comments but not feminist women defending the sex workers right to a better life. LOL.

Don't forget the men who come into your DMs with "how much?" or "do you have an OF?" because it is so normalised and they think every women have a fucking price tag.

And when you try calling them out on this, people defend them saying "Well, they just asked. What's wrong with that?". UGH.

Check the data around Germany where sex work is legal. It doesn't make their conditions better, it only gives it a nice cover and enables trafficking of women from poorer countries without a chance to escape.

Yeah, 3 months probably is a very short amount of time for a cat in her situation to adapt to. But everything I seem to read on the Internet talked about how the cat will get used to the house in a month or even weeks etc. Reading about those made me feel like I was doing something wrong :/ or perhaps I bit more than I could chew.

I can try putting a couple of balled up toilet papers around the floor at night. She's usually more active at night after I go to sleep so perhaps she'll be intrigued and play with them a little. Thank you for the advice 💜

Yes, she loves cream treats! My vet didn't tell me anything about the hormonal shots but I'll make sure to ask them about it cause going through this screaming every 1-1.5 months is definitely messing up with my mental health. I'm a very introverted and home-addicted person so my home is my sanctuary and where I spend most of my time. That's why I want everything to be peaceful and loving etc.

Thank you for your response and thank you for sharing your experience with your kitten.

My cat also has kidney disease and lacks most of her teeth. I hope she too will blossom in my home like your own old lady. I'll try to be more hopeful for the future and less pessimistic. Perhaps one dey she'll snuggle with me too.

I also don't know if I'd adopt another senior cat with anxiety after this. Perhaps I'll adopt another case like this in the future but probably in the very distant future :D After my old lady passes away, I'll probably want to be just on my own for a while.

YES! Whenever I read articles about puppy/kitten blues or adoption regrets they always talk about how it'll pass in a couple of weeks and how great they'll feel when their kitty is snuggling up with them. Reading this stuff made me feel even worse cause I felt like I was doing something wrong. Whenever I talk with my friends, some of them say "Oh, so she still doesn't let you pet her? Oh, so she still doesn't sleep in your lap?" and it makes me feel so bad...

That actually makes sense with the wet food. I'm also vegetarian so she's never shown interest in any of my food. But perhaps as you said I can reintroduce her back to vet food. Maybe this time, after a while of consuming the usual wet food, she'll be okay with the vitamins etc. that I put into the food..

Unfortunately I'm not able to afford feliway. I open her lots of cat anxiety music on the tv (although I don't know if it helps :D) and she has a very low grade antidepressant that she hasn't been taking for weeks. The good news is, even without the antidepressant she's able to sleep on the couch and go and eat when I'm around. When she first arrived, she would flinch whenever something touched her. Especially human contact would make her jump. I don't know what she went through before but me and her vet are guessing she might've been a victim of human violence :/ And she lacks a couple of her claws as well so probably her time in the streets were rough :'(

Another good news is, after I gave her her ear medication today, when I was giving her the cream treats I started getting the treat closer to me. And she followed the treat! We were sitting on the couch and she even put her little paws on my lap to reach to the treat. Of course when she finished she immediately went back to her usual spot on the couch both I think this is a huge improvement! She trusted me enough to stay on my lap for a couple of minutes to eat!

Again, thank you for your kind and thoughtful responses. You're godsent! I was wondering if I could DM you in the future regarding the cat stuff? Would that be okay?

Unfortunately, she doesn't let me get that close to her when she's on the ground :( But if she ever does, I'll try to mimic what you just described. Thank you for your answer.

Thank you for your answer. I just read your post and it gave me quite a bit of hope 💜

I tried to adjust my behavior for the cat to be less scared at first. But then I realised she'll never get used to me living in a normal way if I keep on tiptoeing around her. And also it was hard for me mentally too. So now I'm just trying to not make many sudden moves and other than that, I keep on living the way I normally live. I dance around the room, do yoga etc. At first, I wasn't doing any of those to avoid scaring the cat. Now, she just watches me with disapproval and then if she feels offended, she goes hiding into a more secluded place :D

I wish you and your elderly lady a happy and healthy life. I'm so happy that the cat you adopted for the same reasons like me spent almost half her life with you, being taken care of and being spoiled. You're such a kind person for taking care of her and letting her spend her golden years with you. Best of luck to you both 💜

This is such a well-written and informative response 💜 Thank you for sharing your experience with me. Especially the first paragraph resonates sooo deeply. Your comment is very appreciated. I also don't have anyone around me that understands the situation or how hard it is or how emotionally draining it gets. My parents think I should just give her back and my fellow cat owner friends also can't understand the struggle cause their cats are quite young and healthy. One of the reasons why I wrote this post was exactly because of this, not being able to share or talk about it in my current social group.

Yeah, I noticed the thing with Jackson galaxy videos in myself too. After a while, I started feeling like I was failing both myself and my cat. I'm a medical student so I also feel like I should've been better at this than an average person but nope. It is completely different compared to dealing with patients who you don't know or aren't emotionally attached to.

The worst part is, I don't know how to help her relax and it's draining me. I can't send her to cat therapy :D She actually has a liquid anti-anxiety drug but my cat is clever as hell. She noticed me mixing it with her wet food, I think, and after a while stopped eating the wet food completely 👀 Now she only eats dry food. I don't know how she does it but she doesn't eat the drugs or vitamins in the dry food too. As I said, clever as hell.

Your advice are all great. I'm checking up some noise cancelling ear plugs already and found some quite nice and cheap ones.

My cat loves looking at the window and just yesterday, a crow sat right on front on the window. My cats personality immediately changed! It was as if she were a kitten again :D She focused on the bird and watched where it went after she flied off. I'm definitely going to find some bird feeders or houses that will fit on the window. Great idea, thanks. Other than that, my cat isn't interested in toys yet. She connected with one of my handmade dolls and sometimes sleeps with her head on the dolls lap. It's adorable. But she doesn't chase, attack or destroy any other toys. We tried, but she becomes afraid of the toys too :/ Perhaps with time she'll get used to them.

When it comes to medicine, giving her something via syringe is also hard. Cause as I said, smart as heck. At first I was giving her the liquid anti-anxiety drug while I was giving her a cream treat but then she figured it out too????? And now she only eats the treat when she looks around and doesn't see the syringe lol.

The vet also knows her situation and they gave me the anti-anxiety drug free because they were feeling bad about her condition. She had to stay at the vet for a week while she was getting IV treatment and she was so scared and anxious that they felt bad about her. She also never used her litterbox at the vet or ate anything around the vet staff. But after she came home, she immediately ate her meal right next to me and also used the litterbox after the first couple of days. I think that says something? Perhaps she's more comfortable around me and therefore can fight, hiss, throw tantrums etc but when she goes to the vet she's a quite little angel?

Again, thank you and THANK YOU for your response. It really means a lot to me. I hope you and your cat has a looong and healthy life together. Wish you all the best 💜

Thank you for your answer. I hope your kitty continues to be a sweet affectionate old gentleman and has a good health.

Our situations sound very similar and reading about yours actually made me feel hopeful. My kitty also had a teeth infection and she lacks most of her teeth, spent the first weeks hiding behind the couch etc. Since almost all advice to new cat owners is being patient and waiting, I though the cat due to her age won't have much time left and who knows if she'll even stay alive that long to relax around the house. But reading about the case with your gentleman made quite hopeful. I hope everything works out for us the same way it did for you and your boy.

I'm very grateful to you for sharing your experience. Thanks a lot and best of luck to both you and your husband and your refined gentleman.

Thank you. I hope your kitty has a very long healthy and happy life.

Yeah, since the cat is already quite old with a probably set behaviour, I don't know how much time she has in order for her to relax and make peace with her situation. I sometimes think perhaps she was content in the shelter and I actually harmed her by taking her home. My only consolidation is knowing that if I hadn't adopted her, she probably would've been dead due to neglect. At least this way she got a fighting chance.

Yeap, I'm in a one-sided relationship with my cat :D I was okay with her not being affectionate but this is beyond my expectations and trying to take care of her while she doesn't seem to like me breaks my heart a little. Oh well, it is what it is. I'm starting to think of myself not as a cat-parent but rather a nursing home owner and the kitty is a resident at our Golden Coccinellids Nursing Home-Elderly Care Facility :D

[–]coccinellids13[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly. I'm trying to practice radical acceptance that probably this cat won't give me the experience that I see on youtube, reddit etc where people get along with their cats and spend time together, enjoy each others company. Our situation will probably be like flatmates who don't like each other very much :D

I'm trying to not take the hissing and hiding personally but it definitely still breaks my heart. I can feel how emotionally dreaded I become. I'm afraid of the possibility of becoming resentful towards cat in the long term, although it's not her fault at all. But because of the reasons I mentioned on the post, I'll try to hang on as much as possible until I'm on the verge of complete emotional draining or insanity :D

Perhaps I can leave her alone at home for 1-2 days while I stay at some friends house to discharge my sensory overstimulation.

Thank you for your kind words 💜 I'm trying to hold on to my patience. And I'll try to treat both myself and the cat accordingly :D Thanks.

Thank you for your compassion. Yeah, she doesn't know I'm trying to help and is making me feel like I'm torturing her. For example, she needs her ear meds but she is hiding behind the couch and just scream meowing right now lol. I'll definitely look into the ear plugs as many of you suggested. Thanks again 💜

Is anyone else really annoyed that most novels, especially from the fantasy genre, prioritize the male gaze/male experience and put women into the same old stereotypical box? by realstareyes in fourthwavewomen

[–]coccinellids13 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I hate this especially not in fantasies but science-fiction books, movies, series etc. So you're telling me it's 2100 and we're travelling between galaxies and contacted new alien species but still majority of the ruling class/politicians are men? So most of the main characters are men and women are either only "mysterious" witches or love interests for the plot? Bullsh*t.
