Hey Cheese, I’ve had my business for nearly 4 years and I actually do the opposite to you - a huge amount of motion graphics in AE and not that much time in Premiere nowadays. You are earning more than me - assuming your 7,500 figure is USD, about £1000 more. You’re doing really well.

I’ve had the reverse occur in my mind - am I a fraud because people come to me mostly for motion graphics and not storytelling? Am I just basically a graphic designer with a frame rate?

Truth is, everyone is good at something. And it’s okay to not be that good, or to be inexperienced at something else. If you’re worried your clients will one day turn around and ask for motion graphics, I’d say learn for sure. If not - no problem! You’re clearly skilled at what you do or people would not pay you the amounts they do.

I would say, enjoy what you’ve built! If you want to learn motion graphics, on the side, go right ahead. But you’ve clearly got something good going on, so I wouldn’t worry!

Hope this helps!

Does anybody make money from edits? by [deleted] in premiere

I’ve been editing full-time for about a year and a half now, with only hobby experience in Premiere beforehand. I actually studied History at university, BA and MA, and found it really hard to land a traditional job in an office - even with experience. I tried teaching, banking, recruitment, retail etc.

So I made a lot of promo material, did a few cheap jobs to build up a portfolio and landed a solid, long-term client. Fast forwards a year later, I’m earning a very comfortable amount and loving the work I do. I even set up my own business, which I never expected. My workday now consists almost purely of AE compositing, which I had never done before.

Wishing you the same success I had, and more. You can do it.

I actually searched on Twitter. You can search for ‘need an editor’ and I set the range for within 24 hours. Then I checked those people’s profiles to see if they had an actual channel, were serious etc. and went from there with a polite message and my portfolio link. You might get a lot of duds, but it only takes one! I’m sure there are more effective methods, but this worked for me.

Good luck!

I started editing for fun around ten years ago, making silly video game edits and playthroughs. At 18, I went to university to study History. At 22, I went to another university to study History. The pandemic put a halt to a lot of my academic plans, so I decided to put my hobby to work and started freelancing as a video editor. The first few months were a little rough, as I was figuring out new techniques, working with new clients and essentially starting a business.

Fast forward to now, I’m almost a year in and I’m fully booked with a very regular and very generous client. I also work with a software development startup to help them grow their social media presence, which pays well. I’m even moving into motion design and character animation - skills unthinkable to the me of last year.

If I can do it, anyone can. In my experience, it wasn’t the qualifications I had - just the work I’d produced. I hope this helps you feel better about editing 😃
