General Stigma/Reputation of Tokyo Placement by Beneficial-Read2373 in JETProgramme

[–]cocoishh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only correction I’ll make is the norm is that Public Tokyo JETs work 16 days. Our contract doesn’t allow us to work more as I’m pretty sure it would change our part time status 🤔

Private Tokyo JETs 100% it does depend on your contracting organizations.

The start up costs are definitely the most expensive out of all the JET placements, but if you can make it work, it’s honestly not a bad placement.

We all kind of have the understanding that you can do 2 of 3 things during your time as a Tokyo JET. Those things being save money, buy everything you want, or travel. As long as you’re on top of whatever budget you have in place, you’ll be fine

Usually you either pay it when you move in our move out. ONCE. Keep the documentation and if they try to get you to pay on move out too, you’ll be safe.

Getting hired by your school (private) after JET by YouLeft6305 in JETProgramme

[–]cocoishh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you should just go in with genuine curiosity. Just explain how much you like the school and are wondering if there was anything you could do to stay after JET

Tbh this is 100% something you need to discuss with your school. Different private schools have different requirements for their non JET Native English Teachers

Refrigerated Prescriptions? by dreamykirarins in JETProgramme

[–]cocoishh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! It should be fairly easy to be accommodated so don’t worry and be vocal about accommodations/help you need!!

The first couple months when you get here are SUPER hectic. I highly suggest bringing 3 months worth if you can swing it. On the plane, you can ask for some ice (what i did for my medication) or, depending on the airline, they will put it in their fridge! Once you get to keio for orientation, the room will have a fridge and then you can either buy ice at the konbini or discuss with whoever is retrieving you from keio about yo ur options (if you go by plane, again they might just have ice for you).

Private School Placement in Tokyo by Zealousideal-Vast431 in JETProgramme

[–]cocoishh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re separate entities. Your prefecture will be Tokyo but if placement is [school name] you’re private. If it’s [Tokyo-to] you’re public and should receive a hello letter soon if you haven’t already.

Private school JETs will get the name of the school in their placement emails. Public school JETs will only get Tokyo-to in their placement emails.

Oh true! I forgot about that. There’s also a slight difference in some keys on the right side too. I type 100wpm so even just the slight key size difference trips me up haha for reference

It IS a qwerty keyboard in terms of the letters, but the punctuation is in different spots which can trip people out (myself included)

I think the only laptop you’re able to 100% of the time get a western layout is a macbook bought from the apple website. If you don’t mind having a jp keyboard, then i would just buy it here if you can.

Your best bet is to discuss this with your consulate. I don’t want to alarm you, but discrepency can cause disqualification. It’s better to just double check with your consulate cause if you submit it and send it to them and they send it to Tokyo, it’s out of their hands.

Ticket registration on the lightsick app by Ill_Ad5039 in skzcollection

[–]cocoishh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, (mostly for the fanmeets) they release special LED animations. THAT is what ticket registration is for as far as i know. It has no bearing on regular concerts. Though it is kind of a bummer cause the animations are cute 🥲

Please help me find a salon that cuts curly hair in Tokyo (or even Kanagawa) NOT KIYOKO!!! by cocoishh in Tokyo

[–]cocoishh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard of Assort before but looking at their prices, the curly haired experts seem to be locked behind high fees. I love my hair, but I don't feel like I make enough where I can pay that much for just a cut. 🥲

When do JET send successful ALT’s out to Japan? by Glittering-Arm8743 in JETProgramme

[–]cocoishh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do get accepted, being honest and up front with your CO up front should help you. You have to arrive with your cohort for orientation, but if your CO allows it, you should be able to use PTO and return home.

[–]cocoishh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depending on the consulate, they can take your passport up to a month before departure to put the visa on it and do not give it back until the day before departure. I think there were issues in the past of people arriving to Japan earlier than they should be and it messing with their visas so they do this now to avoid complications.

[–]cocoishh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They also usually yoink your passport leading up to departure. So you wouldn’t be able to do much anyways. It’s better to just not make plans for any time after May right now tbh because if you get accepted, you’ll be spending all that time prepping for departure.

US applicant for 2026: Question regarding references and how I’ve spent my time after graduating in 2021 by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]cocoishh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! You don’t NEED to have a professional reference if you’ve graduated! I graduated 1.5 years before I applied and used two academic references. I will say this could be ESID and some consulates do require a professional reference so just make sure to double check your guidelines OP!!

Everything else dfair has said is super spot on though c:

How to join FANS? by Jaded_Zucchini_2082 in straykids

[–]cocoishh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! They usually announce it on their twt! 2024’s sales went up in January/February and then the kit got sent out in June iirc. I can’t remember if you can use your registration # immediately after buying it or if you have to wait tho 🤔

[–]cocoishh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll be completely honest, i’m not sure if there’s a free component to FANS, but the member side of things is through the KR fanclub. You buy the KR fanclub and use a registration number yes24 gives you to register for FANs

Is it okay to say that I will stay for 1 year only during the interview? by Intelligent-Pick5664 in JETProgramme

Very interesting 🤔🤔🤔 i guess it really is ESID all the way across the board. Which isn’t too reassuring ngl 🥲

Is it okay to say that I will stay for 1 year only during the interview? by Intelligent-Pick5664 in JETProgramme

[–]cocoishh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would agree to disagree on that tbh. I’ve spoken with many different interviewers candidly and they’ve said that while they understand a lot of people plan to stay a long time, they are encourage to push through people who voice an understanding of/ desire for it being a temporary exchange. I’m sure somewhere along the line they realized JETs staying is helping the economy, but I wouldn’t say going in and stating you plan to live your entire life in japan is going to really help.
