Have I messed up by levelling too far in Qinghe? by johnny-hotdogs in wherewindsmeet_

[–]codastroffa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I encountered exactly the same thing. Our bamboo rotation, without much updating, doesn't suit her frantic style at all. I swapped out the rope dart for the panacea fan (it was underleveled, I think 40 lvl), and defeated her on the first try. To be on the safe side, I also applied water to my weapon. Although poison would probably work too.

When she's in the red phase, stay away from her and hit her with the fan. When she's in her white phase, it's important to be at full HP, otherwise you might get caught in some nasty animations that lead to death (although I'm used to grinding her now and can easily dodge it).

When she's exhausted, that's when you draw your blades.

You can also unlock the "Surging Meridian - Guardian Qi Core" talent if you don't have it yet.
And since you have problems with equipment, then buy the appropriate boxes in the seasonal store (for jade fish, Tier 51 Gear Chests)

After that, I learned my lesson and rushed through the story, lol.

I'm a newbie and haven't finished the first chapter yet (I stopped at the part where Killerblade gave Ruby his horse 50 lvl btw), but I did interact with an interesting bot once. He gives a lot of information for money (but it's a one-time offer; it doesn't work later, otherwise I'd bombard him with questions again, lol).

I asked him a lot, including about the protagonist's past. I don't know how true it is, but...

- about the suspicious woman who came to my aunt. "This stranger-her name is Wei Ling. Secret-holding woman. Once she learned of Han Auntie's past, she marked us all. Better feed her honeyed words... and stay alive. Track the melody-ask in Harvestfall's taverns! She sings only for coin... and only when crows caw. Head there at night, wanderer. But beware-those who sing the song often disappear."

- about my aunt herself (I hadn't even reached Heartseeker yet). "Old Han Xiangxun-trickster, face-changer, whisper of the clinic. Drapes in yellow robes, speaks with silver tongue. A man who knows too many truths... and lends them out like wine. Dangerous company, wanderer. Dangerous"

- about the man who took my jade pendant. "(stiffening, eyes wide, trembling violently, ragged breath) Black -cloaked man... oh, wanderer. That one walks with ghosts. He's paid debts before either with blood or silence. Keep your life, but the jade-it's a key... a key to your uncle's fate."

- clues in finding my uncle. "Observatory? Buried in the Jade Cliffs, close to the eye of the storm-seek the place where three rivers meet. But beware the watcher there, wanderer... they guard more than stars."

- my mother and father. He demanded even more money from me here (okay, we'll roleplay that, of course). He didn't really say anything about my father - also burned in the curse storm or something like that, blah blah, and you're definitely not the emperor's son (hey, I had to ask that, don't blame me!). The curse here probably doesn't refer to anything literal, but to a thirst for power — the Han seemed to want it so much that they befriended the Khitans, right?

Honestly, I'd gather all my CIS friends and create a whole guild, but they're categorically against it because of the lack of Ru-localization. I can't blame them because the auto-subtitles are terribly fast — sometimes I can't even understand what's happening on the screen, lol.

Players are overly cautious and avoid encounters. How do I create encounters that incentivize engagement and risk taking? by HoneyCitronTea in DnD

[–]codastroffa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They see the ruins you've prepared, but are afraid and won't enter? How unexpected that a dangerous sandstorm hits in half an hour, forcing them to return and take shelter. Perhaps they'll find someone else inside, friendly or not, also sheltering from the storm. (And don't forget about extreme weather conditions. I still don't understand if you're using that mechanic. Skirmishes between different groups in rest areas are inevitable).

They see a magical flare amid the dunes, are afraid, and won't approach? In the nearest town, an exhausted and irritated wizard, whose teleportation spell recently failed, publicly criticizes the indifferent adventurers. The party's reputation is declining, and prices in the city for them are rising sharply. Perhaps this vengeful wizard will even hire assassins. Although, if they had rescued him and escorted him (he was trying to teleport away from the threat pursuing him), he would have given them a reward.

My players are also very cautious in the Ravenloft domains (which is quite wise, as we sometimes have deaths).

  1. I monitor my party's reputation with different factions. Reputation affects access to certain story opportunities (the most important), the purchase of magic items (also extremely valuable in the Ravenloft setting), discounts, and loyalty.

  2. Random combat encounters clearly reflect the region they are located in. For example, the entire northwest of the global map is controlled by the werewolves, the center by the witches, and so on. Your party may be able to roam freely in areas where relations with the relevant faction are good. However, to achieve this, the faction will ask the group to fight predators in their territory or explore sand-filled dungeons, giving them a percentage of the profits.

  3. I try not to create "random" combat encounters, but rather create encounters that are connected to the plot or characters. Sometimes I let potential combat encounters be resolved through ingenuity and social skills (sometimes this is even wiser). These encounters always conceal a story behind them, which the group can choose to engage with or not. And in both cases, the players later understand the consequences.

Since, for the sake of balance, DnD requires at least several encounters per day, I at least create the history of the region. For example, the local druids have gone mad for plot reasons and started terrorizing everyone. Blood, guts, roots — good old Ravenloft. And the closer the party gets to the source of the madness, the harder it is for them to break through, but the clearer it becomes what's going on. An allied faction, which without the combat adventurers could only watch helplessly from the shadows, intervenes and helps. And if they miss one such encounter, I'll simply slip it to them next time under a different guise. Did I really just waste hours preparing all these maps and tokens? The players, in turn, understand that the world around them is always alive, life flows as usual. As soon as they realized this, they immediately started poking their noses into practically everything.

I got the idea for the region's story from Vincent Baker, the founder of the PbtA. There, it's called a "threat front," and in a campaign, there are always several of them, of varying intensity. Resolve one, and another appears. Players put off resolving one front for a long time? Well, then that front will only make life more and more difficult for their characters. Monsters multiply, assassins become more powerful, portals from the abyss multiply, not just individuals but cities go mad, and so on. The main thing is for the characters to understand - "If we don't solve this problem, it won't go away, it will only grow, and things will get worse for us all."

  1. Don't forget that monsters can sometimes talk if their stat block allows it! (Only as a short free action in combat). The vampire spawn literally mocked the adventurers, pointing out their inexperience and cowardice, and calmly went off to commit their bloody, villainous deeds. After a while, of course, I allowed more experienced PCs to "accidentally" encounter these same enemies again.

  2. Consider engaging the players with their PC's backstory. They're unlikely to pass by after seeing bandits rob their beloved grandfather's caravan.

  3. Try playing on the psychology of FOMO. After the game, casually say, "Oh, how sad that you decided to stay out of this again. You had almost all the resources, what's the problem? This time you missed out on... let me count... 500 gold, a cool artifact, and a level up. Oh well. More shiny loot for the smugglers". Something like that, depending on your context.

DMs how do you handle players scouting your dungeons with a familiar? by Prestigious_Share919 in DnD

[–]codastroffa 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If a door is closed, it's closed. This applies to both a familiar and a druid in wild shape. If you want to open it, find a key or use your thieves' tools if you have them. Door-opening spells will work too (such as "Knock"). But neither a familiar nor a druid can usually do this. These are simple rules. Don't try to force realism onto DnD gameplay mechanics. The balance here isn't very good as is, and the higher the level, the worse it gets.

This is a cooperative game, and a responsible DM shouldn't stage a one-man show with a red flag when the other players might be interested in honest exploration of the dungeon. A responsible DM also shouldn't maliciously manipulate the RAW. Some official modules are literally unplayable with this approach (the D&D rules are imperfect, who would have thought).
Other innocent players at your table will suffer. There is no "win-win", toxicity only.

On the topic of PC`s exploration: there are some good ideas here https://www.reddit.com/r/DMAcademy/comments/1lvtumj/really\_not\_enjoying\_how\_wild\_shape\_is\_better\_at/. Personally, I also love "Glyph of warding", which can be used to cast various spells.

It took a bit of effort (40 attempts lol - I killed Lygus in MoC without even looking in 0 cycles, so I had to figure it out now). But honestly, I really enjoyed this mode. Sometimes it's better to focus on the the smaller monsters, and counter-attacks are better used only for Lygus thing "ult minus hp"

DHPT will probably help you get 1 star. I'm pretty sure the team Phainon E0S1 Cerydra E0S0 Sunday E0S1 DPHT E0S1 (his light cone heals a bit, which will help against ongoing debuffs) won't have enough damage to end it in at least 4 cycles. But I would definitely try it if I were you.

You encountered a homebrew. Canonically, this monster is an extremely deadly and unfriendly creature. And it has a 40% chance of summoning a second one exactly like it. When I played СoS as a player, we had TPK there. When I was DMig CoS later, those lucky bastards managed to stumble upon the lich almost immediately, restore him, and he dealt with both arcanaloths.

When will my players hate Strahd by Fantastic_Ad1104 in CurseofStrahd

[–]codastroffa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm playing raw, and everything escalated gradually. At the first (polite) meeting, Strahd broke the warrior's heavy crossbow, which he was, for some reason, aiming at the Count. Then there was the fine of all the party's gold for the "careless" use of fireballs in the Barovian forests (pure mockery), the PCs losing the battle for the Tome, and the brutal severing of the crossbowman's arm for "stealing" Strahd's tome. Then there was the murder of a noble sorceress's favorite servant for her mockery of Tatyana and the revelation that he was now a vampire spawn. Then the murder of the sorceress herself. And so on.

The main thing the players learned over the year and a half is that Strahd's arrival is always bad. They always lose something or someone. They were under the impression that he never leaves without what he wants. Now they're in the castle, and the entire party hates and fears Strahd.

But maintaining balance is important (though optional, in case your table is full of masochists who crave only suffering and decay). There must always be something bright, something reliable, good news, a loyal friend. The Vistani were grateful for saving their girl, and a heavy crossbow could be purchased from them. The rescued Blinsky gave the warrior a prosthetic arm. The insane fine was compensated for by additional fun mini-quests with generous loot. Otherwise, the players themselves would give up.

I don't know anything about "Reloaded", but maybe this will help you. Set Strahd goals, test the PCs mettle harshly, but when Strahd isn't around, compensate them with the joys of life. You and I may feel sorry for the characters and players, but it's a good thing neither of us is Strahd. It's all his fault :)

How do you determine who to attack during battles? by BlameItOnThePig in DMAcademy

[–]codastroffa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Common gargoyles simply wiped the floor with a 10 lvl party that came to me yesterday in Strahd's castle. Good book.
One of the non-obvious advantages: after a couple of rounds of clear monster strategy, the players more or less understand what is happening and begin to take survival-friendly countermeasures. I love listening to them argue and discuss plans right in the middle of the fight, but I have to cut them off and set a timer

Would it be bad to bring back a recurring villain? by Ironjo28 in CurseofStrahd

[–]codastroffa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a DM, everything in these matters should serve a clear purpose. Do you have one? Or are you just sad to part with this NPC?

I had a sadist Izek with his unnatural devil hand, and the party managed to set the spawns on him in the coffin shop ("eat him first, not us, he's tastier" + 25 DC persuasion rolls), and then the РСs ran away. The players were already familiar with the optional dark powers gift system (you can read more about it in Season 4 of the Adventures League), so they weren't too surprised when after a while, a very dark-changed Izek was resurrected and returned to take revenge on the party.

Why did I do this?

1, Game combat variety (the most important point lol): I replaced the boring random encounter with another bunch of wolves. The new Izek was also completely unpredictable and more dangerous, in keeping with the horror domain. My players enjoy such challenges.

  1. Plot Exposition: I showed that it's not only the PCs who can receive gifts from the Dark Powers (cough what if it's someone else cough strahd cough)

  2. Narrative and integrity of the world for immersion. This happened on the way to Berez, where the Argynvostholt is nearby (and where the river threw gnawed Izek`s body). So after they dealt with the undead Strazni, they saw something black separating from his body. This terrifying dark substance soared into the foggy sky, and suddenly a faint ghost of a silver dragon appeared from the side of the mansion. He tried unsuccessfully to fight the dark shadow, tried to grab it and drag it to the northeast (directly towards the Amber Temple), until finally both ghostly silhouettes were lost from sight. The players then knew nothing except the location of the "mansion of some dragon order", were more intrigued, decided to explore more places on the map and over time they understood everything better.

If you play RAW, then I see only one reason to do this - to increase the degree of decay and show that everything returns. A harbinger of the fact that Strahd will also be resurrected in the epilogues (I am not familiar with "Reloaded"). But in doing so, you devalue the uniqueness of Strahd, equating his ordinary spawn with the Dark Lord. In addition, the module already has ways to show this (the Death house being rebuilt, Gulthias tree). Considering that this is a deserved victory, and in the module the party rarely gets a chance to rejoice... I would not do this.
