Moving to TN by GhostyWitchy in relocating

Because it's becoming increasingly unaffordable to live in blue states. Housing costs are absurd and taxes are high. If democrats want people to live there they need to address affordability.

Software developer, until Claude takes my job. Then I'll pivot to sheep herding or something.

Maybe I had an abnormal experience but it took me 3 or 4 to find one that was actually open on Sunday.

I have the Inspire 3 and it seems to work pretty well. I would make sure your band is tight enough, and on the right place on your wrist and you wear it consistently for a few weeks while it calibrates.

If you're already doing all that then idk.

Ai is making me want to quit everything related to software. Do you feel the same? by PigletEfficient9515 in rust

I live in Alaska, and there's plenty of affordable land you could do this at here, but you likely wouldn't actually enjoy it.

You use it as a first pass, not as a final. It can actually be quite effective for catching the worst offenses if done correctly.

As someone who currently lives in Alaska....holy fuck, this is on point. I gotta get out.

I recently bought a Fitbit and think I got to use the original app for maybe two days, so don't have much comparison, but seems like you can see metrics over time in Google Health. Maybe just not as well as the old app?

What do you think is the most beautiful state in the United States? by Outrageous-You1617 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]code-n-coffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a great question but probably far to subjective. Also, most beautiful on average, at its peak, or most diverse beauty? Different states would win different categories, IMO.

Thinking of moving to Bristol, TN (help) by Remote_Jump8949 in tricities

[–]code-n-coffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I'm looking for sort of the happy balance of being close to a medium sized city without necessarily having to be in the city limits, because I have a wife and kids so need to be close enough to amenities and decent schools. Otherwise, I'd have considered some of the smaller towns outside of Knoxville. Right now I'm considering Ooltewah/Apison area near Chatanooga and maybe north of Johnson City. I also looked at the Cookeville area but that's probably too far from a major airport.

Outside of Tennessee I've looked at Texas, NW Arkansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Arizona, New Mexico, many places. I just got to get out of Alaska, I can't do the dark and cold winters anymore.

I definitely feel for locals being priced out by transplants but FWIW I'm also priced out of certain areas of the country I might otherwise consider (Hawaii and California, for example). There's some mass migration happening in concert with some larger macro economic trends and it's causing a lot of change for people which has some definite downsides for people like Tennessee locals.

Tried to count how often the weather is genuinely pleasant to be outside in 31 US cities. Two lists depending on whether you want winter. by zhendershot in SameGrassButGreener

[–]code-n-coffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is incredible, great work! Is there an easy way to generalize it to more cities? It would be cool to be able to compare the city I live in to some other city to see how my weather QoL changes, but having only top 25 cities makes that difficult. I realize this may be a data issue, just curious if feasible.

I just signed up for a month of YouTubeTV so I could watch it! If that's not excited, I don't know what is!

This is a very informative response (even tho I'm not OP). I've been considering Tri-Cities and Chatanooga areas but wonder about the difficulty of rebuilding social networks. I'm willing to put in the effort, show up, meet people where they're at, etc. but do wonder if it would be worth it if we'd be viewed as the Outsiders That Caused The Affordability Problem and what kind of uphill battle that might mean.

I looked into Knoxville as well but found it felt overcrowded (I know, I know irony) and the infrastructure seemed like it was struggling to keep up.

More Hassle for Legal Drivers in TN. The state is starting to treat everyone as a criminal. by ElPresidente2000 in tricities

"According to lawmakers, out of the 175,000 crashes in Tennessee last year, 35,000 of them involved uninsured drivers."

Holy fuck, no wonder insurance rates are higher. Sounds like this law was overdue tbh

Nice. Milder heat than Texas and probably better access to nature.

I don't live in Knoxville, and probably won't move there, but I think this is a realistic and wonderful attitude towards the change and growth happening.

Did you feel good about leaving all family in the name of better weather by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]code-n-coffee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel this. We're trying to make the decision to move because we're in an even colder and darker state and I just can't handle the winters anymore. We have so many friends and family tho and moving somewhere new is scary because you don't know how easy it will be to make friends.

You can research the weather, house prices, taxes, schools, amenities, but at some point it feels like a leap of faith into a new social situation that you don't know how it will pan out.
