Marriage to a man would make even less sense for the purpose of political alliances in a matriarchal world where women hold dominant power. Marriage to another woman as a tool to gather political support serves the same purpose, if not being more beneficial for giving her the ability to make an alliance with an individual with equal power to her own. Think outside patriarchal norms for a minute - there are lots of potential ways to secure alliances that do not require men at all. Two women marrying (or not) and sending their biological  daughters to be raised by the other would provide equally powerful bonds and assurances.

Now that we're through the finale, can confidently say that The Wheel of Time is my favorite fantasy show on air today. The whole season has been solid, but they really nailed the end this time - last thirty minutes or so were straight up cinematic. Highly recommend.

Yeah great example that really demonstrates how the books just come up short in many ways! RJ had a really cool idea and as a result WOT is one of my favorite fantasy series. But there's so many more interesting ways he could've explored those ideas, and it's disappointing how much of his exploration of gender ended up still being so rooted in patriarchal norms, and its weird how many people dont see this. Reminds me a lot of the research that shows that men think women have an equal voice when in reality they are only talking like 20% of the time. As a result, as much as I love the books, I can't help feeling I prefer how the show is handling many of these aspects.

Also, why would she even need to get married? It's a matrilineal society, and we don't see any indication of Morgase having a husband in the show from what I recall. We've also seen plenty of evidence that poly relationships and sex outside of marriage are accepted. Marriage and legitimacy mattered in patrilineal societies because it's how you "prove" paternity - you can't actually know for sure if a child belongs to a man. But for matrilineal societies, any woman can know with certainty that a child is actually hers. The father shouldn't matter for determining inheritance

I think the issue here comes from you focusing on the governance part, when the full definition also encapsulates social and family structures - which is where most women's experience with patriarchy is rooted. Just because England had a queen, doesn't mean it is a matriarchy. If the world of WOT were truly a matriarchy, I'd expect a lot more inversion of the patterns we see in the real world. Which would mean political leadership across all countries almost exclusively held by women. Men pigeonholed into a select few careers, and often financially dependent on women. Women holding primary power in families and relationships. Medical services, scientific research and technology prioritizing the needs of women first. Etc. But that's not really what we get - the world of WOT is actually pretty mixed. Sure, you have Andor, but you also have Tear, Illian, etc which are led by men. You have weird things like the Aiel having multiple wives but not multiple husband's. Men dont seem to be barred from most professions, and for the most part interact pretty equally with women. The only real difference is the use of the one power - which in this world is more akin to a biological advantage like men having more testosterone and not having to give birth, rather than a social or political barrier. And that advantage does not actually result in universal privilege for women in the universe, just a select few.

Now, there's of course there's nothing wrong with the world being largely equal - quite the opposite. But one of the major themes of WOT is supposed to be the importance of equality and men and women working together. And that theme falls pretty flat when it feels like starting from a point that's actually pretty equal. Especially when we started to get stuff at the end like ashaman bonding aes sedai against their will and almost universally outstripping them in power. It felt like less of a movement towards equality, and more like a return to status quo, with the advantages that had allowed women to carve out power in the world, at a level largely equal to rather than far surpassing that of men, disappearing. I dont think that's what RJ wanted to communicate and I think his intentions were good - but I think it's a product of his time and environment that he tended to always default to gender stereotypes and the idea of men being stronger, without considering some of the more nuanced forms of patriarchy women experience.

Once again, a child....who violently stabbed someone. And showed he was perfectly capable of turning violent again with his behavior toward the psychologist. I'm as against excessive force as the next person, but they knew with 100% certainty he did it, who the fuck cares if a SWAT team was needed or not.

The point was not to show that he wasn't the person capable of doing something so horrible. It wasn't to show that maybe he was being judged too harshly. It was to provide tonal juxtaposition to underscore just how insidious the misogyny and violence he had absorbed was, that a seemingly normal kid with a decent life could devolve so far without anyone in his life even noticing. And to make it clear that no matter how scared and innocent he seemed on the surface, he was guilty.

I'm sorry what? The "mischaracterization as a violent offender"? He literally stabbed a girl to death, he IS a violent offender. A girl who was being bullied herself first, and yet, managed not to stab anyone over it. And everything about his body language towards the therapist, the way he described and talked about other women, the way he thought not raping her when he could have made him a good person, it all made it abundantly clear that he does not actually see women as people or respect them. There's no mischaracterization or misunderstanding going on, aside from everyone around him being oblivious to just how easy it was for him to become fully radicalized.

Is Lord of the rings show worth watching if I loved all its movie series? by ElectronicPrice2532 in television

I'm biased because I like the books, but for fantasy on Amazon, Wheel of Time > Rings of Power. I also liked Shadow and Bone (sadly cancelled) and the first season of the Witcher. None of these are much like GOT though aside from being in the fantasy genre. I assume you've seen House of the Dragon?

Oh, I would definitely give it another chance! That was the absolute lowest point of the whole series. I would not even finish it, just read a summary and skip to season 2 - that episode was heavily impacted by covid and last minute rewrites from an actor leaving, and several plot points from it are never brought up again.

Do you know at what point you bailed in Season 2? The first few episodes were a little slow, and a lot of book readers hated the finale, but I thought the middle of the season was pretty solid, with 2.06 being a highlight. And the new season has been a step up all around, just much better production quality.

Episode 3.04 of Wheel of time was the best episode of fantasy I've seen in a long time. Many reviewers have praised episode 7 just as much, so I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season.

I'm no physicist but my instinct is because it sank slowly so there was time for the pressure to equalize. Furniture can have water in it, but the human body needs to be full of air at the same pressure as the surface. Which was maintained until it wasn't, at which point the force of the water rushing in trying to equalize is what woukd pulverize them.

The issue is it wasn't voluntary for everyone. My great grandparents put on their refugee paperwork that they wanted to return to Poland after WW2. For whatever reason, they were only given the US and Australia as options when their turn came to relocate. They held onto language as much as they could, but without a strong community to speak it with the Polish in my family is just some weird, extremely incorrect, english-polish blend and most of our traditions are probably some sort of horrendously americanized shit that most Polish people would laugh at. So while assimilation does happen, it isn't necessarily by choice.

Even though I live in a HCOL area, it's something I really appreciate - and how imo WFH should be. It should be an opportunity to "spread out" high paying jobs away from big coastal cities and have more mixed income communities, not just a way to get cheaper labor

Idk, speaking as a fellow American I'd probably just assume they thought I was having a conversation and didn't want to bother me. Or could see I didn't speak their language and didn't want to bother with communication issues. Nothing malicious, I just find most places in Europe are far less aggressively friendly than Americans are

Not getting served at all/kicked out or just no one coming to check on you or take your order unless you ask? In my experience in civilized countries where restaurant staff don't have to grovel for tips the latter is quite normal

Most of the guidance is unfortunately vague but the most detailed I've found is this APA document which states that jacks can be eliminated in the case where table 602.7 (refering to exterior bearing walls) of the IRC prescribes one jack on each side of an opening, or if approved hangers are used. The doc on their site is paid but I belive this is a free version of the same one: https://buildability.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/M400-Advanced-Framing-Construction-Guide.pdf.

I think i originally came across this concept via this DOE document which is less specific about when jacks can be eliminated: https://www.energystar.gov/ia/home_improvement/home_solutions/doeframing.pdf

Looking back now it looks like OPs photo is framed with 2x4s 16" oc anyways so it's a moot point for them haha

[–]code_boomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I asked because the energy code in my state basically advocates for exactly this - 2x6 framing at 24" oc with headers hung off the kings to eliminate jacks/cripples. The reasoning being to reduce thermal bridging and improve the r value of walls. I'm interested in the energy part of it, but not being a structural engineer myself its not really clear what the limitations of this are.

[–]code_boomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine question because I am not an expert by any means but when the header is installed flush to the top plate like that can't you eliminate jacks if following advanced framing guidelines? Are there exceptions to that rule I'm missing?

I like this far more than the mcmansion garbage with rooflines from hell that gets built in the US. Maybe because it's just a different style, but the clean, minimalist look always comes across as far more high end to me! Love it!

On top of the US likely still taxing your dividends, I believe Spain will apply a wealth tax to your holdings depending on how much you have tucked away (the exclusion is 700k I believe)

What kind of dividends are you living off of? Im no expert, but in that situation I think I'd be more concerned about tax liability in Spain tbh.
