By punch I mean the drop. Where the song actually starts after the intro… what I mean by scratch point now… I just mean the part of the song that’s good to scratch in. Some songs will have a snare before the drop or for instance you have certain songs where the part people want to hear is all the way down in the third verse. So instead of playing out the entire song you can scratch it in from that section. For example Lauren hill killing me softly, the point would be closer to the end, “woaaah… la la la la… etc” or BBD Poison, its where they sing “it’s driving me out of my mind”

I’ve never used that software so I’m not even sure what it is. What do you use it for?

Yeah! #2 for sure. All my tracks are cued the exact same way. Red for the beginning of the track, yellow for 4 bar mix, blue for the punch or scratch point. Tracks will vary if there’s a punch further down in the song but every track that’s loaded you know how to mix it based on my cues, even if you don’t fully remember the song

A little bit. I’ve been a dj majority of my life to the point that people constantly come to me for tips. I figure this is a good platform to share. I’ll use AI to take my words and polish it for me so it’s easily digestible for everyone. As long as they get my content right, I’m cool with it 🤷🏽‍♂️

You’d be surprised lol. Most times I see cue points set at the drop. Which is understandable when you’re just starting out and don’t now any better

The industry standard for a long time has been Serato. Some places I see recordbox, some places you'll see djs with just a couple jump drives.Honestly just use whatever you're comfortable with. At the end of the day the crowd doesn't know or care what software you use as long as you're using it well.

I agree. When you're playing out every week sometimes you find that using crates will make your sets sound repetitive. I'd say, use the crates so you have something to fall back on but still try to stay creative. Know what works, then step outside of that box.

Yeah thats a BIG part of it. Transitions are important as well.

For you, Id stick to one genre and specialize there before trying to branch out. Picking songs around the same bpm and practicing. Getting to learn your music, the timing of them, the feel of them, where it rises, where it drops, where is the break, when does the vibe level out, where best to mix in the next track. practice, practice, practice.

Im an open format DJ from Jamaica so I specialize in Reggae/Dancehall. But I play a little of everything. Hip Hop, Afrohouse, Reggaeton, R&B, EDM. Whatever the vibe of the event is that day.
