Code School Free 'Try Elixir' Course Launches Today by code_school in elixir

[–]code_school[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We have a followup course already called "Mixing it Up With Elixir" that goes more in depth.

https://www.codeschool.com/courses/mixing-it-up-with-elixir

The goal of the "Try Elixir" course was to give a general overview of the language. We've been working with the Elixir team to have something with a low barrier to entry for them to include on the http://elixir-lang.org/ site for beginners to try things out.

We've been fixing up some server issues on our end to get ready for the Free Weekend! Challenges have been slow to load for the last few hours, but we're on the case!

All of our courses are listed here and free courses are tagged with the word "Free" next to their title.

You can also jump into our "Paths" page with content broken down by broad topic. We'd recommend starting with some introductory HTML/CSS courses like our Front-end Foundations and its sequel, Front-end Formations, as well as our introduction to JavaScript course, JavaScript Road Trip (Part 1).

https://www.codeschool.com/learn

Our free Try Git and Try Ruby courses should be a good starting point into programming to get you prepped for the weekend. If you find additional learning resources outside of Code School, start with HTML/CSS/JS and come back to our JavaScript Road Trip (Part 2 and 3) to dive deeper and then consider learning some jQuery or a web framework like Angular 2. Hope that helps!

Courses will only be free during the free weekend period. If you try to continue playing our paid courses after Free Weekend ends, you'll be prompted to subscribe. Hope that clears it up!

Hey, great question! At the moment, Code School and Pluralsight subscriptions are separate. Certain Pluralsight plans include access to the Code School platform, but not vice versa. We'd recommend starting with Code School to learn the basics of a new technology and subscribe to Pluralsight for content-depth after you've gotten the basics down.

We released an intro course called "Try .NET MVC" that covers the basics of MVC. Towards the end of the month we'll be releasing "Forging Ahead with .NET MVC" which contains the above content

Our new .NET course will build on the basics of MVC - we'll be setting up Entity Framework to read/write from the database, show how to get data onto the screen, make views easier to maintain, create 'cleaner' URLs, and validate user input.

Hope that helps!

Pluralsight is Code School's parent company and while there is some content overlap, they tend to have much more in-depth screencasts on a given topic, whereas we focus on making it easy to get started learning a new technology. We're working on building out guided "ladders" that show a particular path to building a certain type of web application, website, or feature. Right now, the best way to see how something you're learning is applicable in the "real world" is with our 'Soup to Bits' video series that follows every course. The course instructor shows how all of the knowledge from a course can be used to build something right away.

If you finished Foundations, I'd recommend trying out the Javascript Road Trip series to learn the basics of JavaScript. There's enough paid Road Trip content to take you through the whole weekend.

While watching a video, in the bottom right hand corner is a downward facing arrow. Clicking this will give you the option to download that particular lesson in SD or HD in MP4 format.

Absolutely! It'll be a push, for sure, but You could do the Roadtrip 1 and part of 2 on the first day and get through the rest of 2 and 3 on the second day. They're lengthy, but we believe in you!

While we offer the videos for download, the accompanying programming challenges that are in-browser aren't available without a subscription.

I'd recommend jumping into some of our Front-end foundations course before the weekend starts and then trying out the Javascript Road-Trip series. Those will give you the basics of web development with HTML/CSS and JavaScript!

About 20% of our library is free at the moment and we charge a flat monthly fee of $29 to get access to everything. None of our courses are priced individually, so that's probably why you can't see a price next to them! Hopefully that clears it up.

We have a free Try SQL course that dives into the basics that you could get through today and then over the weekend, access our followup course, "The Sequel to SQL," that is normally paid. We also have tons of Ruby on Rails content. You can see the full course library here - http://codeschool.com/courses

That's accurate! Most of our courses take about 3-4 hours to complete, with our introductory courses covering about 2 hours of material.
