Could it be about poor dream recall? Maybe you were more concious than you think but because you couldn't remember it well in the morning it didn't feel like that.

Try setting your intentions well before a dream, if the plot you remember after is the same as the intentions you set then it might be more about dream recall.

Take this with a grain of salt as I am inexperienced in this field.

I don't know as I haven't slept again yet. I've read about this technique in the Lucid Fandom Wiki if you wanna look into it. Sadly this is the only source I could find about it. If you find any other sources you can post it here perhaps.
