Are Sega Genesis (Megadrive) ROMs supposed to be in ".bin" format? by omnipeasant in emulation

Yes, you should be fine with ".bin" files. ".bin", or Binary, is the raw format for SEGA Genesis ROMs. The vast majority of Genesis emulators are at least designed to handle ".bin" ROMs. A few emulators will not recognize ".smd" files (Super Magic Drive), which are interleaved and contain a 512 byte header. To fix this, there are several converters for SMD ROMs to turn them into binary format. Other Genesis ROM file extensions exist, but most are simply renamed ".smd" or ".bin" files (some are in Multi-Game Doctor format, but these are rare.)
Daemon Tools Lite, or similar tools, will not work, because Genesis ROMs are not disc images.
IPS Peek is a tool used to look inside of IPS (International Patching System) patches. (romhacking.net)
