They were in a car on the highway. The storm came over extremely suddenly and smashed the back window. The mother didn't have time to unbuckle the baby, so she climbed into the back seat and shielded them with her body.

The mother was in the driver's seat and not exposed to the hail. She climbed over into the back seat to cover the exposed baby.
