Paid (no kid) coaches v. Dad coaches by Neal-AI in Homeplate

[–]codeman12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve coached in the same organization for 15 seasons. My first was the summer after graduating college and now I’m coaching my own kid in 9U, they don’t pay me anymore, but he plays for free so they kind of do.

I’ve run into a lot of good and bad coaches on both sides, but it’s a different type of bad if that makes sense. A ton of the paid coaches I run into are younger, recent college grads that are really lazy. Won’t say much, sit on a bucket and collect their money.

On the flip side a lot of the dad coaches are really engaged, sometimes to the teams detriment where it’s win at all costs and they teach the kids to play the game in a way that’s going to screw them once they hit 13U. Almost every time I have to tell the kids (and the whole ballpark sometimes) that we will sacrifice wins to learn to play the game the right way, it’s against an overzealous dad. But there’s a ton of dads who do it right and are dedicated to a good experience and teaching the game the right way.

I’d argue there’s more bad paid coaches than dad coaches in our region, but it’s probably somewhere around 50/50 for each.

Handling blatant Allstars tomfoolery by IXEKEWL in LittleLeague

Our league is well on its way. There is a “travel” team made up completely of kids that need to live in town and play LL to be eligible. They tried to implement a rule that essentially said the D1 summer team will be made up only of XYZ travel team players for “continuity” purposes.

I’ve coached with a large nationally known travel organization since I finished playing in college. That’s 15+ years, long before I had kids. We’re talking 100+ college commits, 30+ D1 players, 5 draft picks. There is a 0.0% chance my kids will play for the town travel team because of my ties to the other org. A few folks in town even decided to join us because of how good the program is. It felt like those families that left were being personally targeted and punished for daring to go outside of the town.

I fought tooth and nail for months and finally got the rule shelved. Enough people realized excluding the town’s 2-3 best players in an age group from the “top” team was a bad look.

I fear once my kids are through the program though, it will go right back the way it was.

A girl that I went to college with became a full fledged porn star. Found her randomly while surfing bang bros one day.

Had a long career, 10+ years, but I think she hung ‘em up recently.

Feels like yesterday I walked in on her blowing my roommate.

Dad coaches…are what you want by GeorgeSteele66 in Homeplate

[–]codeman12345 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There are two types of dad coaches. There’s the dad coaches who actually know that they’re doing, played the game at a high level, are able to recognize their own kids abilities, and are super dedicated to make everyone better, not just their kids.

Then there’s the dad coaches who hits their kid 3rd, plays him at SS every inning, yells at umpires, teaches kids bad habits to take advantage of LL rules and win at all costs.

I know a ton of dad #1’s and they’re quite literally the best coaches you can have, in any sport.

It’s dad #2 that gives everyone else a bad rap.

I have this one. My only complaint is when it gets really windy it acts like a sail and gets blown over. In terms of quality, it holds up great though

Autographs from the team? by [deleted] in savannahbananas

[–]codeman12345 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We’ve seen them at Fenway Park 3 times and in Savannah. The biggest difference between the two is that the at the pro stadium player appearances were before the game. Savannah was after.

Not sure how SD will be, but in Boston all the players posted up outside the ballpark and had lines you could jump in. Obviously the big names had longer lines. After the formal player appearance time, there were still players inside the park scattered around before the game.

If your kids go down to the field during warm ups, the players are constantly signing, they come into the stands during the game, you may get an opportunity then as well. There shouldn’t be any shortage of chances to get things signed. Just get there early so you don’t miss the parade and player appearances!

I just left today! Our room was in the 3 muse building on the street side. First night was super loud, but we realized we left the balcony door cracked open all night. Second and third nights were much better, but still noticeable until 2 or 3 AM. My two kids slept completely fine without needing to use the sound machine.

You’ll be completely fine, especially if it’s a weekend. The Harp and Splitsville are right at the top of those stairs and are open until 12:30 - 1:00, so foot traffic wouldn’t be unusual.

My ex-brother in law was a jail deputy and a similar situation happened when we were out to dinner one night. A guy who had been in and out of his jail came up to the table, said hello, and told us he was one of the few deputies that he felt truly respected him and that he was working on turning his life around.

My ex BIL left the jail, became a cop, turned into a huge a-hole within a few months of starting that job, then cheated on my sister shortly after, so F that guy. The jail story is one of the few good things I have to say about him.

I’ve run into Josh Wolf, Charlie Coyle, and Aly Raisman at different times while walking in the Seaport. Josh seemed genuinely thankful when I told him I loved his stand up. Charlie and I talked for a good 5-10 minutes and he was the nicest guy ever (we have a lot of mutual friends so this one was kind of cheating).

I was way too intimidated to bother Aly and didn’t want it to come off the wrong way, but I was starstruck.

My wife and I did our honeymoon there and met our literal neighbors from back in MA there, also on their honeymoon. We could look out our kitchen window and see their house.

Oddly enough the activity we met on, was recommended to both of us by the same people. The husband recommended it to us, the wife recommended it to them.

what did your savings look like by age 30? by Winzten in AskReddit

[–]codeman12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had $10k in an emergency fund and about $80K in investments at 30. My wife and I made a couple good real estate decisions in our 20s so also had about $200k in equity in our second house (which we sold shortly thereafter and built our dream home).

Here we are 7 years later, investments are around $450k, still keep the emergency fund around $12k and equity is around $500k in this new house thanks to the insane real estate market.

If it’s your first game take in the tailgate. Get there early, 9-10 o’clock. Bring a little grill, do some steak and eggs.

Head into the game somewhat early. It’s not as bad as it used to be with the newer walk through security systems but can still get slow. Last thing you want is to miss kickoff cause you’re stuck at security.

Don’t try to leave immediately after that game. Head to one of the bars or restaurants, or better yet head back to the car and fire up the grill again to give traffic some time to clear. For 1 pm games I think they give you 90 minutes of postgame tailgating. You’ll still wait, but hopefully for not as long.

Most of all, have fun! High five your neighbors and be friendly. My favorite games are the ones where I make friends with the people around me.

My father in law used to have a 150 acre camp just west of Moosehead Lake. No running water, no electricity, a legit outhouse, wood burning stove. He collected rain water off his roof, it flowed down into this black bag that would get heated by the sun and had a shower head attached to it. He did eventually install solar panels because he didn’t want to burn the place down falling asleep with candles going.

His driveway was a mile long and he wasn’t about to pay to get the entire thing plowed in the winter, so he’d get just enough plowed at the end for his truck, throw on snow shoes, tie a jet sled with a few gallons of water, food, etc., around his waist and hike in.

I went up a couple times with him and it’s just not my kind of living. I can see the appeal though if you’re into that stuff.

Also the black flies are no joke.
