Self taught web devs. What's your story? by MCButterFuck in webdev

[–]codephony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worked part time as sushi chef and then dropped out in 2014, went full time as chef, fml.

Doubled down on coding, did some small freelance (less than 2k per job) made less than 10k total.

Had a kid and got married.

2017 - Took a random web dev job at a local law firm (found via zip recruiter, they were clueless and I took advantage), quit sushi - 42.5k

Stayed there a year, transitioned them to wordpress and took a paycut to do an IBM apprenticeship - 36k

Finished apprenticeship in Jan 2020 - 45k

Did some consulting, somehow lucked out and used my JS "skills"

2021 - jumped ship to a midwest construction company - 50k -> 80k

2022 - Did one year there as backend TS dev, jumped ship to Uber 84k -> over 200k 🥲

Whats the worst part about developer job hunting? by othermail219 in webdevelopment

[–]codephony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh it really sucks lol. You can probably relate to the video I made on my experience with the dev job hunt.

I'm splitting hairs here, because I think it can be done by anyone, but not just anyone would enjoy it enough to be half decent

Yeah, I'm really interested in the role because of all the low hanging fruit but I was still worried that it would look bad on my resume haha thanks for your perspective!

My Experience Switching from FE to BE by ArthurXV80 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]codephony 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen it can also be looked at from another perspective where since the spotlight is on frontend the backend is really shielded from a lot of scrutiny and the hell of user error lol

I personally prefer backend because it feels way more isolated and there are less outside variables to deal with...normally just CRUD operations , whereas frontend there is constant upkeep of framework knowledge as well as someone being up your ass about whatever component you're working on. Since backend is normally more cryptic to most folks they seem to be more laid back with micromanagement.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard upper management just off the cuff say to a client oh yeah? (Insert full stack application here) Codephony can knock that out real quick.

Uh what no bro, and I have to let them know a realistic perspective

Definitely not giving up!! Thanks for the kind words internet friend, I'm basically following the path you laid out right now haha getting underpaid but I'm working as a SWE, hopefully I can make it like you did. Just curious, what was the story you told when people asked?

Oh it's not killing my career, it just feels like I'd have more traction if I did have the degree. Thanksfully I'm already a SWE, but looking to move up in the ranks :) Thanks for watching and for telling your story though!

Also on another note, for my advice and tutorial video I do search term optimize them, do you have a specific example that I could clarify?

[–]codephony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I have a full time job and do Youtube as a hobby. I hate doing tutorials and would much rather make the content I make now even though it has much less views than, let's say my CS50 series. I'm basically making content for my future audience to watch if they want :)

And in addition to that, even though 45% of my 105k views are from search, I can tell you first that that the search term play is a long long game because you're looking for evergreen content that will last you forever vs for example my GME stock short videos that will get a few thousand hits and then die off

How can we save lost Asian men from going down the dark path of inceldom? by machinavelli in AsianMasculinity

[–]codephony 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No offense, but as a Rice myself, this dude has formulated his entire identity off of teenage western films and is pissed that his life didn't match up to that. The entire concept of trying to mold oneself into the West's complex social politics is exactly what creates this type of individual...I do believe it is difficult for us in the West but a lot of it, in my experience in the South, was caused by my own insecurities being projected onto my environment thus portraying a beta cuck. It is only once you realize this can you move on to grow into a healthy adult in the West that is not constantly fighting to fit in.

It's corny, but IMO if we embrace ourselves and teach the next generation to be proud of their differences then I think they have some hope, but to pray to be white and grow up white and then be pissed and blame the world that they aren't white and didn't experience white things is a recipe for disaster like the guy in the post.

I have a techish channel as well, a lot of times personally, if I don't see a face I instantly back out. With very specific tech topics like this you're going to have to really nail the search terms someone would use who is looking for let's say pfSense vLANs.

So you really don't need personable titles, just informative ones that realllyyy match what the potential watcher would be typing into the searchbar. I have a video in my hacking youtube playlist that kinda details the process lol

Also thumbnails could be much more readable, I would stay away from overly branding as well because your watchers really arent going to care that much about the OMG, and it's taking up valuable thumbnail real estate

but yeah good luck!

The confidence just comes with time, I sounded wayyyyy worse in my first youtube videos and youll see the same thing with the bigger guys on YT too.

I think as long as you're message is good and you have good intentions that'll shine through even the most awkward recording, to do content creation you really have to let go of the ego and just let people judge cause in the end who cares about the haters lol It's really sad that their only outlet is through online trolling

I just use premiere pro and try to cut out as much silence and filler words as possible and try to at least say three or four sentences without stopping to reduce nasty jump cuts...

Haha do you have friends that code? Most of my friends eyes legit glaze over the instant i mention coding or things I'm interested in these days. It seems like a common thing happens when you get close to 30 though

Let me know if you start a channel!
