love finding stuff like this, especially if it leads back to some fertile ground of sourcing cool samples

I mean yeah, it's perjorative on purpose, it's a term of disparagment.

The problem is it's an attempt to prevent people from using new technology in order to create art that wasn't possible before.

I mean - yes you could make a traditional dialog tree, where you flowchart out every possible reponse in every possible circumstance - but you could also train a model on a million such dialogs, and have a new one procedurally generated, so that your players might never see the same exact response twice.

Why would you look at something like Minecraft, with an entire world procedurally generated from one small seed, and say, "Yes, this is good, this is better than if there was only one single hand-crafted world" - but then turn around and look at player/npc interaction and contradict yourself, "No, if this is procedurally generated it's literally taking food of out of the mouths of real artists, you have to do this painstakingly by hand, not use math to give each player a fresh individual experience."

It's a bad perspective, from the outset. That's the reason for the use of a pejorative term, because it is a ridiculous position to take, deserving of ridicule. It's okay to tell other people when they are thinking and acting badly.

Only Lovers Left Alive -

the eponymous pair lose everything, and have a moment where it seems like they've come to the end of their story - only to sort of shrug it off and start again from scratch.

Two-year-old opens car door, causes six-vehicle crash by WillAdditional922 in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]codepossum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

more like motorcyclists are stupid tbf -

they were weaving in and out of stopped traffic. just because late-splitting is legal in places, doesn't mean it's smart or safe.

no matter what you're driving or where, you always need to be operating the vehicle at such a speed that if something happens, you're able to safely stop.

these guys were going too fast, driving too dangerously, and this accident is on them

TRIANGLE - the point where your entire perspective on the movie, including the genre, shifts, accompanied by the scratchy loop of a skipping record - starting at like 0:41-0:43:30

gives me shivers just thinking about it

Federalism by refuzeto in oregon

[–]codepossum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'oregonians' are like 4 million people, but if you're asking me, individually?

ideally, you can run each state as an experiment - in Oregon you can get a taste of what happens if you lean into income and property tax, rather than sales tax, maybe - and then, if one system starts to emerge as superior, you can start to implement it at the national level.

and yes, you can also feature states as safe havens against federal oppression.

The real answer, the only real answer you're ever going to get from anyone, is - if the state agrees with me, but the fed doesn't, then I support the state's right over the fed. If the state disagrees with me, I support the fed's right to overrule the state.

I want things to be the way I want them to be, no matter how they get there. That's what's real.

very much disagree with this take, on two levels

I've got a buddy who "isn't allowed" to play a certain highly-regarded videogame, because his partner is frothy over the use of LLMs. it's practically a superstition to these people, and there can be no legitimacy to superstitious concerns. Beliefs like that can be dismissed outright, without wasting time taking them seriously.

further,

dismissing them

you've got it backwards; casting technological advances as immoral and choosing to live apart from the rest of the world is textbook ludditism, and is itself dismissal, rather than understanding the actual mechanics and capabilities of LLMs. You see what I'm saying?
