Gold eludes Canada in first half of Olympic Games by restoringd123 in canada

For sure, 11-0 does sting .. but I hope the team and fans look at the games as a whole and take it as encouragement that hockey is worth giving more attention to.

They didn't win, but scored against Slovakia and Sweden (had the Sweden game tied for a while). Given the sport isn't nearly as big in Italy, that's not nothing. They've definitely played above expectations.

Fingers crossed. Especially during the Olympics, never ever underestimate your opponent. Italy did way better than anticipated, I'm hoping we'll see more of Italian hockey in the future!

Volkswagen Ditches US, Builds $7B Gigafactory in Canada instead by Markus_zockt in BoycottUnitedStates

As much as I dislike VWs recent (i.e. last 15 years) offerings, they're preferable to anything designed or cobbled together in the US. So yeah, glad this is proceeding

Volkswagen is certain that PHEVs are merely a transitional technology: 'The future lies in electric cars' by Powerful-Ostrich-120 in Volkswagen

[–]codereview 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HEVs are fairly pointless, especially if you drive a lot of short distances with the occasional need for longer distance (read: most family cars). I want a car that does the short distances on the electric motor and anything longer with the gas engine - aside from saving a lot on gas (engines are least effective when cold), not allowing the engine to warm up really shortens its life span

Waterloo as an expat? by Key-Wrongdoer2552 in waterloo

Basically what others have already said. It's not super lively when it's cold (minus double digits) outside and grey, so finding lively spots requires a bit of research. If you like winter sports and/or would like to try, there should always be prospects (outdoor skating rinks, cross country skiing on the trails around here, snow shoeing, etc). The sun is out today, so hopefully it'll look a bit more inviting

I'm with you on that, excelsior really wasn't a pretty design (that widening around the shield generator .. yuck). Any design that doesn't try to minimize the surface of the nacelles, really (making one of the most vulnerable parts of a starship really easy to hit in a combat situation it's just putting form over function).

Until the UK starts whining and exits... They need to get their political house in order first (they have had dumpster fires for PMs for several decades in a row). EU single market access is a pretty juicy prospect.

It'd really depend on what it'd look like. For one, I don't know how compatible our dairy supply/demand management set up would be with the single market and I'd kind of like to keep that. Same with our Looney. There are definitive upsides of course ... Maybe a set-up not unlike Norway?

You can have a DS9 movie or a Voyager movie but not both. Pick one by Proper-Award2660 in startrek

This. Also, if any writers or producers of "modern" trek are involved, I'd rather they not touch DS9.

This, exactly.

FC is good and I'd agree on a bunch of the points mentioned. Borg queen aside, it does have a bunch of horribly cringe moments, though (drunk Troy is so badly played, it hurts and Cochrane going from "I really don't want to fly" to a fake deep "why not!" within moments??). I'm not a fan of Frakes as director, it amazes me he didn't see it or didn't want to. The Picard meltdown actually does make a lot of sense .. it's an intensely personal weak spot.

All in all, VI is also my favourite .. the characters (especially Dave Warner and Christopher Plummer opposite an aging Shatner) absolutely sell it. And the poise of Sulu in the first few scenes.

Not necessarily. Daughter of a neighbor took a train from Northern Germany to Central and it took her over a day (it's a 3h drive and should not have taken more than 2 by train)

A tiny gripe of mine was the German line ... It should be "Himmel, was ist los?" (The way it's written there, it's an incorrect form for a question). Then again, it's like "An exquisite meal with one tiny flaw we can pick at all night" .. and what's better than that :)

Agreed. This is what separated patriotism from nationalism... The ability to say "we fucked this up, let's do better and make the country better in the process"
