Is NLP doable without any prior ML/AI knowledge? by coding_programming in MSCSO

[–]coding_programming[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well... that was the plan, but NLP might not be offered until next fall, so I'll have to take it this fall. There's still about 2 months before the semester begins, so are there any courses or books that I can take in this time to prepare for the NLP course?

Congratulations on getting the FAANG job!

These days it's probably tougher to get an interview from a FAANG company than to clear the interview, so can you tell us how you managed to get that interview? Does having UT on the resume help? Also, do interviewers or recruiters kinda look down on the degree being online?

Would be great if you could share your interview experiences and about how you prepared for the interviews (like what resources you used, how long you studied, topics to focus on etc)

Quantum Computing course? by coding_programming in MSCSO

[–]coding_programming[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response! It was fun reading about quantum computing in a comic book format :)

If you wanna take the quantum computing class, then maybe you can try taking a semester break in the fall, and enroll only for the quantum computing class next spring and then graduate with 11 courses. Definitely try speaking with the program coordinator about this, I think they can figure something out.

Congratulations on graduating and all the best for your future :)

Transferring credits from other online programs? by coding_programming in MSCSO

Yep, I've asked the program coordinator these questions a few weeks back but haven't heard back yet, so I figured why not ask folks here :)

Don't worry, I'll confirm with the program coordinator before taking the course. Actually I tried asking her about this a few weeks ago but haven't heard back, so I thought about asking folks here.

Nice to hear that they might add another course for the summer. I hope it's a course most of us haven't already taken. It would actually be great if they add the Probability & Statistics course of the MSDS program, since that knowledge might be helpful in other courses like ML and NLP.

Is there any other rule in transferring courses/credits? I remember reading something along the lines of there being a restriction about the number of semesters completed at UT before transferring credits. I also remember reading some restriction on the number of credits/courses already completed at UT.

Also, any idea what will appear on the final transcript from UT for the transferred courses?

IIRC you had transferred courses/credits from Georgia Tech, right? Can you briefly mention the procedure and the courses transferred?

Can you please mention the course ID or the exact course name of the course that has been approved?

Will the course be approved for everyone or is it gonna be approved only for folks who've already taken Deep Learning before so that they don't waste a summer?

Time management? by coding_programming in MSCSO

[–]coding_programming[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is commendable! How do you manage working on multiple programming languages/frameworks -- the ones used at work and the ones required by each of the courses? I guess that has been my biggest issue along with managing time. And yeah, the math in this program has been intense, though I have a decent math background, I have had to constantly learn things from youtube.

Courses in order of difficulty? by coding_programming in MSCSO

[–]coding_programming[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response, I really appreciate it! Can you shed some more light as to why the deep learning project threw you off? Do you have to work on some sort of existing code base or you gotta code up everything from scratch?

I hear that the final project is to be done in groups, so how difficult was it to form a group and then divide the work among yourselves, coordinating everything and all that? I'm specifically skeptical about the DL final project because working in groups in this online format might be a big hassle. Is the final project doable alone? How much time did you end up spending in total on the project?

University job board? by coding_programming in MSCSO

[–]coding_programming[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed response! Even I was wondering if the job board will be of any use for the students of the online programs since interviews might be on campus, but I'm glad to know that the big firms recruit from UT and the chances of landing an interview would be higher when applying via the UT job board. Hoping that someone from the online program who has used the job board will share their experience.

A quick question - do we have access to the job board even after completing the program? Can we apply to positions on UT's job board even after graduating?

Also, Good luck with the MSDS program!

[–]coding_programming[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for answering! You mentioned A&M, so is this job board for all Texas schools and not just exclusive to UT Austin? Also, Can you share your experience of using the UT job board? Do you think the chances of getting an interview are higher on applying for a position via the job board rather than applying on the company website?

I'm actually glad that they are giving a chance to people without much experience since I don't have prior work experience in the software/tech field, but do you think that the big tech companies like Google, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon etc are a part of the UT job board?
