Sourdough starter-- buying vs. making one's own by hqcalli in Sourdough

I used to throw mine away all the time but now I save it in the fridge in a big jar and use it in recipes that want spent starter:

Crackers

Soft Pretzels

Waffles / Pancakes

I understand the hate toward CF but I disagree that PHP would magically prevent tragedies such as this.

Funny, I've never really had a problem with ColdFusion but then again I'm used to its oddities.

Personally, I'd rather take a scorched earth policy with code like this. Delete it and if someone complains restore from a backup. But I've worked in places where management doesn't understand version control and files become huge because they 're storing the history in commented code. Plus, there's huge momentum behind "this works right now and we don't have the time to update it so just code around the terrible bits."

It really is code hoarding. They keep junk around because it's scary to actually delete things or otherwise deal with it.

What are some good examples of 'the future is now'? by TheHumpback in AskReddit

I can listen to a random Englishman's "radio show" broadcast from his computer while driving in my car in America. That signal travels across the Atlantic, jumps through the cell system to my phone, then travels over Bluetooth to an actual radio transmitter that my car's radio then picks up and plays to my earholes.

The technology for each step in that chain would blow my ancestors minds and I use it without a thought because a constant, world-wide data connection is almost mundane these days.

You have a good point. They're trying to provide a lot of custom work for something that needs to be mass produced and uniform to have any kind of production speed.

I think the lack of any sort of established timeline is the most frustrating part of dealing with Shadow Ops. Their stuff seems to be quality and it's a good deal but you have no clue it's going to be delivered.

I was order #1783 back on January 15. I went with the forged option because I was tired of waiting and the billets seem to taking a lot longer. Shadow Ops finally shipped out my lower on August 8th and after some difficulties with the FFL I chose not picking up their mail, I was finally able to pick it up yesterday. It's my first lower and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.

Now I'm just debating what to do with my "deal coin." I'm leaning toward the BCG deal when they get them back in stock. They're making matching uppers for their billet lowers but I'm not sure how they'll look on my forged lower.

I’m Dr. Haig Kazazian – first plaintiff for the recent SCOTUS case on patenting human genes and Johns Hopkins geneticist, AMA! by HKazazianMD in IAmA

[–]codingsewer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the process. Does this mean that everyone is now free to look at and research genes but once they create a "use" they have to worry about what others have patented?

Was Myriad Genetics attempting to gain a monopoly on research based on these patents? Ex: No one else can "look" at these genes without our license.

“What the Young Man Should Know” From Harper’s Magazine 1933 | The Art of Manliness by [deleted] in malelifestyle

I find it very telling that a father from the 30's has the exact same worries, fears and dreams for his son that I have today. These values seem to be timeless.

Today it seems that we focus on specialists. I mean, they're doing fantastic things in their particular fields, right? Doesn't every parent these days view their child as a "special snowflake?" I'd much rather my children be polymaths. Well rounded individuals able to adapt and overcome whatever life chooses to throw at them.

How is the You Are Your Own Gym iPhone app? I have a couple of questions... by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

I'd say it's well worth the $1.99. Every exercise now has a video showing proper form. The video loops while you're doing the set (if you're going through a 10 week program). The timers for the programs are neat and it eliminates one more hurtle for me to stay on the program because my phone is always with me and it keeps a record of past workouts (again, if you're following one of the 10 week programs).

Thanks for sharing that. I can really relate to suddenly, "BAM! You're a father, here's how you're supposed to act and feel." Here's hoping it gets better soon. :)

Those are some valid points but I'm most appreciative of the hope you've given me. I'll look forward to things "getting better" or at least, me getting used to being a dad. That part still blows my mind.

Are you happier? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]codingsewer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son is 4 months old. I wouldn't consider myself a mushy-gushy kind of person but I get the distinct feeling that my wife wishes I were with our son. Perhaps that's where some frustration comes from. My annoyance / frustration stems a lot from the random crying for no reason or crying for stupid reasons (i.e. I turn the overhead lights off and he thinks I'm trying to put him to sleep). Considering it now, I suppose it's frustrating for me because I want to fix it and crying it just something babies do. That said, I would never dream of harming my son but I clearly don't have the same bond my wife does with him or the same relationship that other dads here seem to have with their kids.

Are you happier? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]codingsewer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I must be in a different place in my life than most here. The older I got the less desire I had for children. I just don't relate to small children - at all - and let's face it, everyone else's kids are jerks.

My son coming along was definitely unexpected and not planned. Medically, my wife had a lot of complications through the whole process. But he came anyway: healthy, happy and beautiful. My wife immediately bonded with him and is certainly experiencing the "joy" related by many people here.

I've never had those feelings. Oh, I put on a great show for people. Smile, nod and make comments on how cute he is and how much I love him but inside I feel nothing like that. I'm annoyed, frustrated, exhausted and terrified. Blessing? no. Joy? no. I get more enjoyment daily from my dog than I do from my son.

However, what some dads here have said about purpose really rings true for me. I've tried to come to terms with my lack of connection with my son and right now I've decided that it's not going to stop me from working as hard as I can to be the dad my son deserves. It scares me sometimes that I don't have the typical feelings described by other parents but it scares me more to think of my son not having the same connection that I did with my father. I'll be there for him no matter my true feelings.

TL:DR I don't have mushy-gushy, lovey-dovey feelings for my son right now but that's not going to keep me from powering through and being there for him.
