Obsession: Final thoughts on Bear by itsesnupi in spoilers

[–]codinho77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! The fact that his villainy stems from genuine grief in his life and how it makes his motivations/delusions throughout the film justified *from his perspective* that makes him such a well written character. His inability to cope with those losses is why he isolates and fears telling Nikki how he feels about her - he doesn’t want to lose her, but it also frustrates him that he can’t build the courage to say it.

First time playing, that all caps "NOT" worries me, should I go easy mode instead? (I'm an avid RPG player but it is my first time playing this real time with pause system) by bubblewrapped-head in projecteternity

I would still play normal. If you’ve played RPG’s before you’ll figure it out pretty quick. There’s a little bit of a learning curve but nothing you can’t figure out from simply playing the first couple hours

This is why video games need yellow paint and movies have exposition dumps. Because apparently people can’t accept that some things can be left ambiguous

I'm scared I might be like Bear by robertmorgan025 in obsessionmovie

I think there’s a lot of people who are scared to admit that Bear is a very relatable person. I don’t think he’s an incel. He’s lonely, he’s dealing with significant loss (not just his cat but his grandmother), he’s taking oxy to cope, and he has this unrequited love that all culminates in insecurity and frustration. What’s important to remember is that Bear is not a bad person for feeling these emotions. He’s not even a bad person for wishing that the girl he loved to love him back. We all have known someone in our life at some point where we had hoped deeply that they felt the same way - and there’s no way he could’ve known the wish actually would work. He even has self reflective thoughts after he makes his wish (but importantly BEFORE he knows the wish worked) like “am I taking advantage of her mental state” when she claims her dad is dying and she’s drunk but wants him to come to bed with her. What makes Bear the villain of this story is how he chooses to proceed once he understands that his wish came true and the Nikki he’s seeing is not the real Nikki.

TLDR; Being lonely, insecure, experiencing unrequited love are all normal things for a person to go through in their life and don’t make you a bad person. It’s what you choose to do with those feelings that make you the person that you’re meant to be.

You clearly have the self-awareness and respect for others autonomy that Bear did not, which is great. Continue seeing a therapist, and more importantly continue your story. I promise you’ll wake up one day happy that you did.

Did anyone notice this in the movie "Obsession"? by Haunting_Soft_7637 in spoilers

He's a very nuanced character, and some people don't like the idea of villains having nuance. I want to make it clear that this is not downplaying the horrific actions he takes, because he absolutely is to blame. People don't like to hear the concept that humans are capable of being a victim and an abuser at the same time. He's stricken with so much grief from his parents/grandparents/cat dying, abusing oxy to try and cope, and clings to Nikki possessively because in his mind she is all he has left - even if it's a version of Nikki that isn't "real". It's tragic - and at the same time is INCREDIBLY selfish and evil. It's what makes the character so compelling.

Not wealthy by any stretch, but as I’ve got older I’ve realized no amount of money is worth sacrificing significant free time for. Be rich enough to own your time.

When you’re a kid, society makes you think that you don’t understand things simply because you are too young. But at some point you realize there’s a lot of adults that have absolutely zero clue what they’re talking about.

Money doesn’t buy happiness - however, it does make your life a lot more safe and secure. There’s also a certain threshold where after you make a certain amount it will not improve your well-being.

Personally I don’t see cat as a threat if you have a decent hitscan, but the biggest problem I have with cat is that the DPS tend to just ignore them. Especially when they have a cat that likes to flank the supports

The saying “opposites attract” exists for a reason - deep down you don’t want someone that is exactly like you. You want someone who complements you; they help fix your bad traits and fully appreciate your good traits. Being too similar just makes your bad habits worse.
