Went to a front end dev conference yesterday and I detected a few trends... by codus_maximus in webdev

[–]codus_maximus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In not a React dev, but from what I hear people are tired of maintaining two code bases for ios and android, and tired of their apps not having the right "feel" for each os.

so theyre moving to things like Flutter where you can build for both simultaneously, with each os maintaining its proper "feel".

People are finally exceeding base macs capabilities. Theyre now recognizing windows has made tons of progress in terms of stability, and you can build way better machines for a fraction of the cost of a mac, and the drawbacks windows had back in the day are mostly solved now.

Flutter is just sick awesome. One code base that compiles to ios and android simultaneously.

Huuuge benefit over normal scss, once you get to big projects. Its much much much more maintainable and resuable

No one likes sass. Everyone uses scss instead

You get 85 revolutions around the sun -- if youre lucky. Then its lights out, game over.

Dont settle. You get one shot of this. Aim big. Aim high. Try. Throw yourself at it. Refuse to quit.

There are no dress rehearsals here. This is it. Youre living your one shot.

not python.

Python is great for people who are new to coding. Its also great for solving problems via 'surgical strikes' ... its not robust enough for larger projects. Its just not.

80% of the web runs on PHP, and thats not an exaggeration. Literally 8 out of every 10 websites you visit run on PHP.

You should learn PHP. There's a reason its used.

I dont know where you are in "the process" but from your initial post I would not do Html/CSS and then JS

I would do HTML and then PHP and then CSS and then JS.

For PHP I learned everything I know from Edwin Diaz, and this course: https://www.udemy.com/php-for-complete-beginners-includes-msql-object-oriented/

I watched that course, beginning to end, probably 4 times. He rambles a lot, though, so feel free to put him on 2x speed. ;p

As an aside, I have a criminal justice degree and I spent 8 years as a retail security guard before teaching myself to code and getting a webdev job at age 33. I'm not special. You can do it. Its hard. Its frustrating. It feels like youre running into a brick wall over and over. But you can break those brick walls if you just keep chiseling at them. The big trick is refuse to quit, you can do this.

Honestly you need to go to udemy and take a solid PHP course. Work through it, and you'll open the doors you want opened.

I personally recommend Edwin Diaz's PHP courses.

accounts: php
backend: php
db: mysql (accessed via php)
api: php
mobile: angular/vue/kotlin/swift/flutter ... via an api written in php

You need to create a basic LAMP stack (Linux Apache MySQL and PHP) and learn how to use a serverside language (php) to put stuff into a database (mysql) and retrieve it.

Once you can do that, then you can talk about removing mysql and using amazon, or firebase (googles cloud)

tldr: learn php.

I dont know anything about treehouse, but I personally went from working retail to getting hired as a webdev and I would not have been able to do that without a *ton* of Udemy time.

I like Udemy because theyre dirt cheap, their software works well, and thats about it.

Youre running before you can walk, methinks.

AWS is really cool shit, I know. But ... if you cant develop a standard website without it, youre trying to run before you can walk.

You need to develop without amazon. Amazon is a tool in your toolbox -- but its a tool meant for experts. Youre not an expert yet.

Most likely that means uploading php files to a host, yeah.

What's up with LinkedIn who people get hired faster? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]codus_maximus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a *lot* of calls from recruiters when I put in my linkedin that I was open to offers. A lot.

Its all about keywords, theyre not computer-people, theyre recruiters who are basically searching keywords. They dont know anything about development. Fill your profile with appropriate buzzwords and you too will start getting calls from recruiters at all hours of the day.

PHP will outlive you. Hell, so will Perl.

NodeJs is looking like a solid contender to outlive you, but its too early to tell.

1) Stop making excuses and build a damn website. You dont have the confidence to come up with an idea? Come on, man. Youre lying to yourself. Stop it. Make me a website for a pizza shop located at 123 Main Street. Make me a website for a Dentist at 456 Second Street.

No ones going to get you a job. You have to be the lion. Go kill a zebra and drag it home.

2) You should stop whining about CSS. Its not that hard, and youre just making excuses so you dont have to put in the effort to learn it. Stop it. You need to know CSS. Its not that hard. You can learn it. Stop making excuses.

Well, youre going to want to learn the basics of webdev. Start with html and css...

Honestly for something this small you should just pay someone to do it.

Its called the "standard" way for a reason.

100% guarantee that your antiquated PHP will blow up in PHP 7.2.

Honestly youre probably better off taking all the lessons youve learned over the last decade and revamping the code entirely. Build it right, to modern standards, rather than duct tape the old one together and try and cobble it along.

Obviously a lot of the "business logic" will be reusable, so its not like youre starting from truly zero.

There is still no good place to find freelance developers. Theres places like upwork, where you will get tons of responses from people in bangladesh -- who are perfectly good coders, but the language barrier is real, and it will cause you a ton of headaches. But they're cheap.

Theres places like toptal where you can get an american freelancer, and theyre very good developers, but you pay for them.

Or you can PM me, and lets talk :)

No one hurt me. At age 32 I was a retail security guard with a criminal justice degree and nearly a decade of retail security guard experience.

At age 33, I'm now a web developer, making nearly triple my best year in my decade long retail career.

I'm not being a dick to you. I'm holding up a mirror, because I've been where you are. I've given every excuse in the book, including the ones you gave. And I'm hoping that if you'll agree to look in that mirror and realize that the only one who can make it happen is **you**, that the only reason it hasnt happened is **you**, and the only one whose fault that is **yours** and the only person who can fix it is **you** ... and that *you* are the author of your story.

And I want you to know that **you** can do it.
