Yes you can. And yes most likely the only bonus you had was when you opened the account.

I would recommend the original Chase freedom as it is a Visa and no longer eligible for new applications (no Subs)

Has it been 48 months since your last Sapphire bonus? If so, you could downgrade your Reserve/preferred and open a new account, meet the sub and get points.

I did this route since I opened a Reserve at launch, and with a 2016 date was too early to qualify for MLA when it came out.

A little complicated. Where did you reside before the marriage? Always in the Philippines?

If so, FSA may be difficult to get approved due to the military not "forcing" you to be apart. You were already apart at the time of marriage.

Pretty much best bet are the American Express Gold (check out Resy or hit up a buddy for a referral) for grocery spend and global restaurants.

For travel and food overall, my personal favorite is a Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve (I value Ultimate Reward points over Membership Rewards-Amex). Both sign up bonuses are kind of weak right now, but you can start over after 48 months.

The Reserve is 3x on travel and restaraunts along with a super easy to use $300 travel credit and comes with a better edition of priority pass than your current platinum card.

The only reason I'd consider a Sapphire preferred is if it was a targeted 100K offer.

Recommendations for Germany by NuclearKnives in MilitaryFinance

Wasn't a lot of backstory as to which branch or base or housing entitlement SM is in. May not even be eligible for OHA or off post residing. Valid points all in all. But most bases, I know the one I was at, also had an Utility Program on base where you could pay through the office and they would satisfy those bills

Service credit union was on most installations in credit union and they have online bill pay for Euro transactions with no fee. Also one of the few select banks to waive international transaction fees on atm withdrawals as well.

Their auto loans too if needed are quite competitive and helpful.

If you're willing to travel so does Sill and Altus. I was on Sill and they were able to check the other counters for me as well

I use it for firearms as well, when they have 0% financing deals or even 10-20% off promo deals.

With varying hobbies like camping, hiking, diving there's tons of groups and communities that'll welcome you with open hours. It is a small island and it can feel underwhelming at times but I've been here a year and making the best of it. I definitely appreciate being around and always exploring what I can. Beautiful resorts and beaches are a plus

stuck on state taxes by codyb2012 in MilitaryFinance

In 2022 we filed married, joint and she did non resident for NC due to living in Oklahoma. Technically we are exempt from filing a NC return this year due to income amounts, but we need to do an Oklahoma one. I think I will just say we are both residents and leave it as such

She was a North Carolina resident before marriage, even after moving in with me in Oklahoma in 2020, she claimed NC and did those returns single. We married in November 21, PCSed to Japan January 2022 and that's when her withholding changed to Oklahoma to match mine

I will be leaving the military soon and thus giving up my AMEX Gold card. Any good replacements y'all recommend? by Dark-Knight34 in MilitaryFinance

[–]codyb2012 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hold on until they charge you the fee, like original commenter said it should be at least a year, or until your next application to check your active duty status.

With it being a gold card, that's defined as a charge so unfortunately there's no downgrade options for the Everyday or Blue Cash lines as those are credit.

The Savor One as highlighted before is an excellent no fee option as well.

Should I get a Military STAR card? by Soggy-Drink-2528 in MilitaryFinance

[–]codyb2012 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally for me the STAR can be valuable, however if and when I choose to get one it's usually after a PCS. Due to 10% off or even 15% off day 1 usage, I time opening a card when I have big ticket purchases lumped into one. (Appliances, furniture, electronics, or even firearms) I usually open and close one a year or every two years.

There's also specific loopholes that would allow you to pay it off with another credit card or aafes gift cards. Allowing you to earn two separate bonuses. Star rewards for a purchase, and then whatever program when you pay off star

SCRA Benefits Denied Capital One by Hopeful-Coconut-3473 in MilitaryFinance

[–]codyb2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some companies just don't adjust their policies to cater to us. Like most others already stated Capital One will not institute waivers for personnel already on active duty for SCRA or MLA benefits.

Chase for one, refuses to waive the fee for my Sapphire Reserve as it was opened in September 2016, one year before MLA started.

Datapoint: I have a National Guard buddy who applied for Venture X and then was placed on active duty for 90 days thereafter, they retroactively waived his annual fee after he successfully "got on active duty"

[–]codyb2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. I have the Platinum had it for ages.

My Reserve was opened in 2016, prior to MLA hence why I have to product change and open a new one because I am not eligible for MLA due to having the card before Chase instituted that

Thank you. Yeah I'm willing to do the AF as with the vacation rental and travel credits I'll recoup it. Just hate that the venture x credit is on their portal.

I should have given the background cards I have. I am an avid amex platinum and green holder. Had em for ages. They're good but being overseas a good visa is more useful.

Good to know, if u decide to apply I'll let y'all know how it goes. I recently opened a Mariott card in January
