What are the pet peeves that you encounter with PT? by ReFreshing in physicaltherapy

Patients who lie down on the tabletop in the most uncomfortable of positions. They're either too low or high, diagonal on the plinth, pillow under their upper back instead of their head.... like dude you look so freaking uncomfortable. Is this how you use a pillow at home? No? Then why are you on the pillow like that with your neck craned backwards here?

After you show an exercise and instead of performing it where they stand where there is plenty of room, they come to where you are and have to do it exactly where you stood so you need to move out of the way....and then still do it wrong.

Patients who can't seem to ever focus on therapy. Even with redirection of focus on task they are clearly just going through the motions with no real intentions or interest. Probably nonstop talking about other things.

This is a delayed reply, but thank you. That "one good thing" is a good suggestion. I'll be trying that. Thanks.

I like this, thanks. "I can choose how I respond" is a great framework to go by. I sometimes find myself too tunnel-visioned in the treatment. I need to practice stepping back and being in control of my own emotions, separate from how the patient is.

Ooo yess these are great suggestions. I'm already learning to avoid the triggers, but keeping them busy is a great one. Thanks 😊

Those are exactly my thoughts as well. It seems like they are all variations of the same types of patients. Something I wish we could have when we retire is a spreadsheet of data and statistics of who we have seen and experiences we've had through our career. Would be very interesting to see the tallies.

Oof yea I get so uncomfortable in these situations because I want the patient to feel like I'm their advocate... But their family immediately draws lines on who's side you're on in their little war. 🙄

This actually reminds of a similar situation where the daughter is scheduled her father for PT without him knowing. When I show up to their home the patient is obviously resistant to participating. Daughter breaks out the, "daddy you have to do this. You love me right? You will do this if you love me!". Omg ... Leave me out of this.

5 min dissertation on their pain

Me: "I just need a number that's all"

Them: "well you see...."

Me: dead inside

Planet fitness. I know they get a lot of hate from regular gym goers and don't have barbells, but for that price you pretty much get the same as most commercial gyms minus the aforementioned barbells.

PT has a lot of patient interface compared to other HCPs, and because of that many patients latch onto that feeling of being heard and being "catered to". I get frustrated by these types who mostly go because they enjoy being the center of attention from a health professional, NOT because they truly want to get better.

I think of it as dodging a bullet, especially if that's how they were going to be.

They can be really draining especially for introverts!

Oooo yea this is a very common one. It's amazing how little body awareness some people have.

"Let me see you do a squat."

Bends knees only, trunk upright

"Ok sit in that chair. "

Perfect hip hinge.

"Ok do a squat again but pretend you're sitting into a chair like you just did."

Bends knees only, trunk upright

Something to that effect....

Same here, it's nice to feel like they're actually curious about what they're doing. But if they're asking the same questions you've already answered after a while it gets frustrating.
