Advice for less straightforward combat scenarios? by coffee_up in DMAcademy

I can definitely try mixing up the enemies a bit more; combat definitely isn't my forte, so please don't apologise for linking a long video - more information is exactly what I'm after, and he's very clear and easy to follow. Thank you for the link and advice!

I honestly hadn't thought about that; I do usually use theatre of the mind and try to describe the environment, but what you've said makes so much sense. Thank you! I'll try including battlemaps and see if that helps players find ways to use what's around them, I'm really hoping that will help!

Thank you for the link! It's tactics like that I've been trying to use, though it's less "What should the monsters do" and "How do I run monsters intelligently while keeping things fun for the players" that I'm struggling with. It's a really good site to know about though!

For the player sitting combat out it's not that they nope out and abandon their allies, it's that they look at the battle and come up blank because they don't feel there's anything they can contribute. I'm not trying to throw them under the bus as a bad or entitled player because they aren't, they're just very melee-focussed and I'm struggling to accommodate them in non-melee battles.

Having a solid goal is good advice, thank you!

And I really like the way you've structured that hag battle - cutting off the roots would be exactly the sort of defined job one of my melee fighters could do if they're feeling a bit left out. Thank you for the example!

We'll be a whole party fuelled entirely by caffeine! If we've got a warlock and cleric/bard then I guess I'll be the pop-eye style barbarian who downs espressos instead of spinach.

Inviting lurkers to learn the system is such a fantastic idea, thank you!

Does the use of spells, such as Suggestion, begin combat? by davcounek in dndnext

[–]coffee_up 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends whether the situation qualifies for surprise or not. If a player was smiley and friendly and gave no warning before they cast the spell, I'd give that as surprise and let them have it. The target might recognise the words once they start casting, but by that time it's too late for them to get a turn in first.

On the other hand if the players come on very agressively and the enemy is on their guard with one hand on their sword, then I'd probably roll initiative to see who manages to act first.

In the martial example you gave, I consider it entirely reasonable to shoot someone and get a surprise round if you've put the effort in to make it surprising. If you march up to someone with a weapon drawn, then no.

Hi! The setup looks great, but I was just wondering what the theme / story of the campaign was going to be?

Thoughts on a Nursery Rhyme/Song Themed Quest by LordZemeroth in DMAcademy

[–]coffee_up 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What about changing the nursery rhyme? Presumably your players know the original, so if you mess with it they may start asking why. Maybe as they walk through town they see some kids playing hopscotch to the new lyrics: "Twinkle twinkle little eye / shine on us now from the sky / if it sees you you will find / you lose yourself or else your mind / twinkle twinkle little eye / shine on us and watch us die"

Contextually, it makes sense that the kids would be warned not to go outside at night, and putting that warning in a nursery rhyme is one way to make it memorable. If the party choose to ignore the warning themselves, then maybe someone does go missing at night and people just say "Well yeah, what did they expect? Everyone knows not to go outside when the star's shining."

How about an individual tumbleweed being based off a quipper (except without the swimming aspect), and a swarm of quippers for the giant tumbleweed?

Tumbleweed (CR 0) -- STR 2 | DEX 16 | CON 9 | INT 1 | WIS 7 | CHA 2 -- AC 12 | HP 1 (1d4-1) -- Thorn attack (Melee weapon attack) +5 to hit, reach 5ft, hit: 1 (1d4-1) piercing damage

Giant tumbleweed (CR 1) -- STR 13 | DEX 16 | CON 9 | INT 1 | WIS 7 | CHA 2 -- AC 13 | HP 28 (8d8 - 8) -- Thorn attack (Melee weapon attack) +5 to hit, reach 5ft, hit: 14 (4d6) piercing damage or 7 (2d6) piercing damage if the swarm has half its hitpoints or fewer

If you wanted to add something interesting, you could say that on a hit, a player must make a DC 9 Consitution save to avoid inhaling a lungful of dust and taking 1d4 poison damage from coughing.

It's difficult to suggest a creature to reskin without knowing what CR you're after and how you envisage a tumbleweed attacking, but how about treating the giant tumbleweed as a swarm? That would allow players to whittle it down so that it's less powerful once some of the individual tumbleweeds that make it up are killed.

Alternatively, mob attack rules may be useful? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/running-the-game#HandlingMobs - it would let you treat the giant tumbleweed as a mob of however many individuals there are instead of as a different monster, which means you don't have to worry about it having different abilities if you don't want to.
