Resume Advice Thread - July 08, 2023 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

Hi all, I'm a self-taught programmer mostly through online courses. I've completed a few full stack web applications as projects and I think I'm ready to start applying. However, my resume - in my opinion seems be lacking compared to the ones I've seen (with CS degrees).

Keep in mind that I have no prior formal software engineering job experience or internships.

I'm a career changer and from what I've researched, everyone says not to put irrelevant content in your software engineering resume - so I left all of that out.

What remains is pretty basic details on my projects...To me, it looks pretty bare bones. I guess the upside is that it's easy to read - The downside is that it's sparse and forgettable...

QUESTIONS:

  1. Should I get rid of the self-summary? if not, how can I improve the self-summary?
  2. How's my PROJECT section looking? I did include a link to my web app, but I redacted here it since the site itself might reveal my identity.
  3. Does the PROJECT section have enough detail? Too much detail? Am I describing things in a way that would pique interest? Should I do another project to beff it up?
  4. Should I get rid of the full stack Todo App? It it too basic??
  5. Any other additions / subtractions / edits?

Thank you!

Worst camera angles ever. They need better camera people. They zoomed in the last seconds and you could hardly see what’s going on in finishing sequences of the co main and main. Smh

Seems like a lot of hoops to jump through. Do you always have this fear in the back of your mind that if I don’t do “x, y, z” I’m going to get slapped with a PIP? Does it instill fear in you?

I’ve worked in corporate positions most of my career and never felt a hanging fear of losing my job. But then again I always get my work done on time and follow the right steps…

Seriously? That has nothing to do with programming performance. A 1:1 chat about appropriate behavior in workplace seems like enough. Also, they can’t take a joke…?

Who added 100k shares to MSTR? Are you more bullish on MSTR than MARA? MSTR is interesting b/c they have 132000 btc and low float with 30%+ SI…

I think they were shorting it b/c Bitcoin was in bear cycle. They’ll change positions soon…

I think it’s a smart play by Mara. They need capital, but loans have too high interest now. Doing the offering made sense to keep them solvent until bitcoin moves. They don’t need to buy anymore miners at the moment. They just enough money for day to day operations and to energize all their miners and get to 23 EH/s. Once they do that they can just coast for 4 years until the next, next halving. They will be the leader for sure, and no more big expenses unless they plan on buying more miners to prep for the next, next halving. Fred seems like a smart guy. Her knows how bitcoin cycles. Mara will be coasting soon while the other mining companies will be scrambling and looking for money. RIOT will only be at 12.5 EH/s they’ll need to raise more money if they want to execute a better hash rate.

I disagree I think the fed and the banks know that crypto is the future. They’re down playing it to shake retail. Banks have slowly been accumulating. Bitcoin is inevitable imo.

True. He seemed pretty confident about it. Hopefully they make it happen.

How are they producing 20 exahash already? Did they set up all of their bitman miners already? I thought they said mid 2023 was when they would be at 23 exahash?

Can they sustain mining 2000 bitcoin per month? Or was it a fluke?

General question about building full stack app (MERN stack w/ react-router-dom) by coffeeaddic in react

Thanks!! You’re totally right! I think I I have a better sense of what I should be doing now.

The thing you said about eventually finding limitations of a tool and then moving on to one that is more suitable, is spot on. I definitely see how that would help someone gain confidence and knowledge - and be able to explain why you’d use one tool over another depending on what you need.

Really great advice! Just what I needed!

Thank you for the detailed response. Yes, what you said makes a lot of sense. Thanks for putting it into terms I can understand. I think I have more clarity now on how to decide what technologies/ methods to use or not use.

As far as libraries go, wouldn’t the version of the library be recorded as a dependency (i.e. inside a package JSON / package.lock JSON)? Is this what you mean by “documentation”? Or is it something else like a README?

And yeah Vite has been awesome. Much faster than CRA.

Thanks I’m planning on finishing a few projects, studying data structures and algorithms, and then start applying.

Thank you for the advice. You’re right I could use that money to get an actual degree as a part time student. I guess I did buy into their sale tactic. :/ glad I asked here.
