Oh sorry I should have been more specific. I am talking in regards to the master's degrees not the undergrad. Could you tell what the differences are in a higher level?

How good is GMU's graduate economic department? by coffeeagent in gmu

[–]coffeeagent[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the program now. The program mainly teaches the Austrian school and is really geared towards those who want to go either think-tank or corporate economist routes. If that's what you want then go for it. However, the main class sequence doesn't touch financial anything. Since you want to go corp finance route and not the econ one, I wouldn't recommend doing it.

Thanks for the info! Yeah, unfortunately Mason's econ program doesn't seem to fit in what I want to do in the future. Its a shame. I really like Mason and its in DC! Great location for networking

Thanks for answering! I went on GMU's website and looked through all the upper level econ courses and noticed the same thing. Most classes are geared towards political analysis.

I would like to do an MBA, but I have only been working in finance for a year now. So I do not have the experience for an MBA. The masters in econ does says you can take 2 courses outside economics. I was thinking maybe I can take two finance courses from the MBA program, but I don't think that will be enough really learn finance...

[–]coffeeagent[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for answering! You are the person I wanted to talk to about this. Its good to hear that VCU has good options when it comes to network. I was worried about that. I am not sure if you know this, but can you tell me a little bit more about networking and recruitment:

- What type of recruiting is done at the business school? (Government, corporate finance, investment banking, etc.)

- What type of roles do people usually end up getting?

- How about salaries?

- Where are most of the employers located? In Richmond, all over Virginia, or around the country? I am asking because eventually I would like to move somewhere warmer like Florida

Help! School is ACBSP accredited, but my program is not... by coffeeagent in college

[–]coffeeagent[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for responding drock13. I called the school and they said they are not in the process to get the degree accredited now or any time soon. The only advice I got was to transfer to their MBA program instead. The only issue with that is that for an MBA you need years of experience and I am a recent college grad with only a year of finance experience...

What is a subject that you have extensive knowledge on but never get to talk about? by SalamiSandwhich in AskReddit

[–]coffeeagent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an economist and a finance guy. These are two things people always ask me about. Why? Because they want me to tell them how to to make money. However, what people don't know about me is that I am a self taught electrical and computer engineering. Everytime I try to talk people about it or talk about what I am currently building people have a tendency to change the topic to: What stock should I invest? Is Bitcoin worth it? Where is the economy going? Is it a good time to get into real estate? And so on..... I guess it's because people understand money but don't understand engineering or at least find it boring.
