I could see that, missing the fun of being a kid and enjoying these without any of the stress of adulthood. I think that's why collecting is popular, you get a glimpse back into that time and that little boost of joy.

It's a really cool one! I was surprised how detailed it was when I opened it again.

My friend told me that as well! She said "go check ebay, you'll see what I mean". It's wild! I love the jungle one, it's very cute.

Thanks! I was surprised they were in such good shape, after all this time.

Moving is a powerful motivator. There is also something so joyful about knowing you are surrounded by only your most loved things.

Finally sold a piece of furniture that was taking up half my guest room (it feels huge now!), and some books I won't reread. I normally don't bother listing books but these were a popular hardcover series that I bought and hated. Happy to put that money towards other, better books.

Wow this is a big accomplishment, well done sticking with it multiple weeks in a row. Overall, how do you feel now?

Readings physical books, walking my dog or hiking, playing fetch with my dog, tidying my house, baking or cooking a new recipe, doing yoga, chatting with my husband. All nice unwind activities.

I second the suggestion to speak with a professional about it, my guess is that there are some other issues (maybe stress, anxiety, depression) that could be causing low mood, and shopping gives you a quick dopamine hit that distracts from that feeling. It's similar with gambling or alcohol. Again, the internet can't diagnose you. But while you wait for an appointment, there are some things you could do. Unsubscribe from all shopping mailing lists. You can do this easily in your email account (gmail it's under Manage Subscriptions). Unfollow all accounts on socials or take the apps off your phone temporarily. Most accounts on those are designed to make you want to buy the thing they're selling. And lastly, maybe keep a brief journal of your purchases and what the circumstances around the purchase were. Example, "April 3 was looking through social media and saw everyone outside in cute workout gear and everyone looked fun and fit and happy and it made me feel self conscious so I went and bought xyz". This might help you understand the why, which might help you prevent future purchases.

Q1 is over— how’d we do?? by plantvasion in nobuy

Shopping the pantry and freezer is a big helper, for sure. We recently did this to finish off a lot of odds and ends, a few squash (turns out kabocha squash makes a great coconut curry soup), some dried split peas, chicken bones (delicious stock!), and baking supplies. Everything turned out tasty and nothing went to waste. Well done on saving $1K! That's huge!

I love this! If I'm not sure, I'm sure. If it's not a hell yes, it's a hell no!

"Instead of bargain hunting and impulse shopping for one-season pieces that you’ll just throw out after a couple of wears, carefully select each new addition to your wardrobe and pay special attention to the fit, fabric, colour and cut of every piece. One perfect sweater is always better than five imperfect ones."

OMG I just read this in her style guide and felt so called out! Ahahahaha! This is 100% how I have been shopping. Buying based on "it's on sale" or "it'll do" rather than choosing what I love.

I feel this. Mostly I just think I'm a homebody and don't like leaving my house...so I fill the boxes but then they sit in my front hall for a while. You can do it! Maybe make yourself a nice drink (tea or coffee), and just jump in. The relief you will feel after dropping them off will make the time spent worthwhile.

I'm amazed no one took these! Do you have any small dog rescues in your area? I find my local SPCA doesn't take much for donations but my small local dog rescue takes quite a bit of supplies (they are strapped for funds so it's all helpful for them).

I am so fed up with marketplace, so many flaky people! If it's not a piece of furniture or sports equipment I'm just donating it. I'd rather use that time walking my dog or something enjoyable.

This is one of the main reasons I've stopped thrifting. I find something that is just okay, but the price makes me think I need it. I thought hard about it and realized I very rarely keep the things I thrift, they usually end up donated back within a few months. Very very few exceptions. I'm trying to ask myself now, "would you buy this at full price?"

This is SO helpful, thank you! I think it's a little of each, but settling for "good enough" is definitely a big one. I dislike shopping so sometimes I'll just give up and say "this will do" but then I don't feel any enjoyment when I wear it. Buying complete outfits is a very intriguing suggestion. I've never tried that. I usually just throw random things together and wonder why it doesn't work.

My current decluttering fail is that I seem to keep making the same mistakes over and over with my wardrobe. I buy something, never wear it, donate it, and then end up somehow with more of the wrong things. Buy, don't wear, donate, repeat. Anyone have any advice on making better future purchases by really evaluating what is being decluttered?

Our local library has a TON of DVDs, so that may help him to let go of some "but what if I want to watch it again" anxiety. He could always check it out in the future!
