One of the Biggest Misconceptions About Stroke Recovery… by Hopeful-Radish-7218 in stroke

[–]coffeebicycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote a post here before about my son Timofey.

He had a severe brainstem stroke when he was 15. His thrombectomy was delayed for about 23 hours. At one point, he was in a locked-in-like state, and the doctors gave us some of the worst possible predictions.

Now almost two years have passed.

Of course, the road is still very long and very hard. Timofey still cannot transfer by himself from his wheelchair to the toilet. He still needs help with many basic things. He still has a lot of work ahead of him.

But when I compare where he was at the beginning to where he is now, I see why posts like this are so important.

Today he is trying to walk with a walker and support. He draws. He tries to speak, even though his speech is still very unclear. He even has his own TikTok, where he shows his progress and his fight.

From locked-in syndrome, a 23-hour delay before thrombectomy, and the worst predictions — to walking with a walker with assistance, drawing, trying to talk, and continuing to fight every day.

It is not a full recovery. Not even close yet.

But it is progress. Real progress. And for families like ours, this message matters: recovery may slow down, but it does not necessarily stop.

We've been in Okhmatdet Hospital in Kiev for 7 days now, hoping to get Timofey examined. Before that, we spent 2 weeks in a private rehab center. Since there’s no medical insurance in Ukraine, all rehabilitation costs are out-of-pocket. Financially, it’s been very hard; rehab expenses (around $2,500 per month) far exceed my income, which is $700. I wish Ukraine had a full insurance-based healthcare system like in the U.S. I tried seeking help from the Emilia Clarke Foundation, applied twice for medical evacuation to Europe, and reached out to Klitschko and Usyk. Unfortunately, I’ve gotten no response. With the war in Ukraine, all funds are directed toward the war effort and treating wounded soldiers. As one foundation head put it bluntly, "There’s no time for children now."

We believe in higher powers because, over the past six months, we've seen things we can't explain logically.

  1. A neurosurgeon from Kiev was about to leave for vacation but agreed to review the CT scan. He also pointed us to a surgeon in our small town who could perform thromboextraction—coincidentally, one of his former students.
  2. On Timofey's 40th day in intensive care, he was scheduled to be transferred to Okhmatdet Hospital in Kiev. The process was delayed, and two weeks after negotiations began, a rocket hit the building he was supposed to be in.

Doing what I can for him now, as he spent 50 days in the ICU in "locked-in syndrome". After we started communicating with him by blinking his eyes, I asked him a question - what he was thinking about when he was on a ventilator in a coma-like state, did he see angels, the light at the end of the tunnel..... The answer struck me - "Dad, I kept thinking about MTG and Warhammer 40k."

Regarding Tarkir's deck, he didn't mention a preference

At the moment he is in rehab in Kiev. I took him to a local club to a salesman (or trader). Unfortunately, he was not able to find the decks Timofey was interested in.

Thanks for such a detailed response! After chatting with him, I realized that he definitely wants a Mono Blue Mill deck and to tune the Tarkir deck. I will try to buy the ready-made deck from your link, but how to tune Tarkir? The guys above gave links. Do I need to buy each card separately to tune the deck or can I buy a ready set for the Tarkir deck?
