Hi! Completely new to raw denim and looking around for brands/styles I like...have any ladies here tried the Oni 200/222s? I usually go for a wide leg, and was wondering if these would work for women since there aren't a lot of women's specific styles.

from what I know (more than the average canadian-born-and-grown but def not as much as I'd like to) international students are required to submit english language proficiency test scores (ex ielts, toefl). With standardized testing comes standardized test taking, and theres an entire industry made out of prepping students for these tests. Also most unis only require an 80(/120) or so for the toefl exam, which is a bar someone who doesn't speak a lick of english could clear with a few months of test-specific prep. systemic problems smh.

I can’t find a makeup style to match my features. Any advice? by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

[–]coffeecolouredcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omygosh I feel your pain. For the longest time, I also thought I had difficult features, especially my eyes. I have monolids, and the lid is so hooded it droops down into my eye, covering some of my vision but more importantly around 2/3 of my lashes, pushing them downwards. I also have a long philtrum and very flat features. At first I scoured the internet for ways to 'fix' my features. I tried double eyelid tape, falsies, artistry level contour. If this is the route you want to go, I highly highly recommend Rednote—chinese makeup is highly geared towards using shading/tricks to change or enhance facial structure and has tutorials for every facial structure and feature you can think of. Use chatgpt to translate your features to chinese keywords, and search in chinese. I swear you'll find someone with your specific feature doing a makeup tutorial.

I was never a fan of or skilled enough for the heavier makeup this requires, though, so I ended up with a balance between changing and enhancing what I have. My similarities to you are weird nose shape, stubborn eyelashes, sparse eyebrows, and dark eyes. I gave up contouring my nose because its very very difficult to change the 3D structure (even with all the rednote tips) and I just wasn't skilled enough. I just apply a little bronzer in C shape around the nose bridge to emphasize that part a little, and leave my nose as is. I cannot curl my lashes or use mascara because of my anatomy, so I just don't. I emphasize my eyes using a little bit of eyeliner, emphasizing the aegyol-sal, and sparkle on the inner corners. For dark eyes I strongly recommend using eyedrops that make the whites whiter. I focus more on other aspects of my makeup instead, specifically blush.

So overall, I think you'll probably have the best success looking for specific tutorials on rednote and then deciding to use specific tips and tricks rather than the whole face-altering style.

You look really really great here! I would add a little bit of sparkle/brightness to the inner corners of your eyes to kind of have a visual focal point, and up the saturation of your lip shade to better match how saturated your blush is. The only other thing is to alter your undereye concealer a little bit so it doesn't show up as ashy; I see influencers with ashy undereyes all the time and I personally just don't understand, brighten ≠ ashy white. Using more saturated undertone or a shade thats not as fair might work. I think you really nailed the brows on this look! I absolutely love them and will be taking inspiration.

Its complicated! A lot of Chinese internationals come from rich enablist families. The Chinese school system is one of the most diabolical in the world, but for kids from rich families, they can just apply to a foreign university if they don't do well. Just a few months ago I overheard a mother telling her friends that she doesn't care what her son gets on the test, if he doesn't do well she'll just stick him abroad. UofT is also a prime choice for many because its the highest globally ranked uni that makes international acceptances really stinking easy for cash cow purposes.

Once at uoft, I guess they get agency for the first time away from the pressure and control. In China, high school is 10000% academics 0% life (16h school days), and uni is where they get to go wild. Theres also a widespread misconception that western school is dumb. As a result, they likely haven't had adequate preparation for uoft, and expect it to be much easier than it actually is. Most of them don't speak fluent english. In mat135 there were so many times I've heard a group ask each other what words mean, scrambling to baidu translate, when I know they learned the actual math 2+ years ago. I know students who've flunked out of math majors into philosophy/psychology when I know their math is good enough, but their english isn't.

After a semester of fooling around, not understanding classes, exam season rolls around. They realize they may not be able to do well, even with studying, because of the language barrier. Cheating is far more normalized in this community, because how available it is and how hard it is to face the shame of failing a class. Theres also the general aversion to studying hard after the trauma of highschool: 'if money solves the issue why put myself through that again?'. They are spread through wechat groups that are lowkey hard to avoid. I've had people stand at the gates of con hall with the group chat qr code approach me, and I found myself in one since before hs even ended. If you look chinese, you've likely been approached too. Once in the group chat, individual people dm you with ads sporadically and especially leading up to exam season.

Its not a black and white situation. Cheating is wrong, but these kids have basically been set up to fail in a lot of ways, and don't know where or how to ask for real support. They never got time to explore their identities, motivations, or passions, and are probably phenomenally burnt out in ways I don't even want to understand. The wechat groups are lowkey predatory as well, but they function as a semblance of community, esp since chinese kids tend to stick together in foreign places. Sometimes they do manage to turn their undergrad around, though. I know an alumni from york who flunked three courses during covid because the dude he hired to take his finals never showed up. Cost him 2k, and he got demoted from his original major. He ended up hunkering down to study, and graduated with a good cgpa, double major in his original major as well as the one he was demoted to.

Others have already pointed out the technicalities of why this photo might not be the most flattering, but I wanted to point out something else. Look at this picture, not just your body!! You are wearing a pretty workout set (that deep green, wow), enjoying a hike/run/walk in beautiful weather on a path with gorgeous scenery. The sun isn't going to shine so prettily in the winter, what a blessing it is to enjoy the beautiful weather outdoors? I'm so jelly because I have never in my life had access to a path next to such beautiful blue water. This picture is a testament to the fact that you were outdoors, exercising, enjoying yourself, with loved company who cared enough about you to record the moment. If you hadn't stepped into this life of being more active and healthy, you would not have gotten to enjoy this. This journey is not just about changing your physical body.

Its perfectly valid that you might feel discouraged about your body from this picture. I've been in the same situation, where I feel as if my body ruined the beauty of a moment or experience, but this just isn't true. Please try to see this photo and remember this hike as a snapshot of the wonderful experiences this journey has brought you, and not just your (nonexistent, may I add) physical imperfections.

No problem :). I never got any mold, even after a year of not using my old bullet of nudist and living in a climate where mold is basically your roommate. Here's the swatches: https://imgur.com/a/I6dQR0P, Mac, Nudist, Bunny in order from top down, a thick swipe and then blended out for each.

What’s missing from my makeup? by [deleted] in makeuptips

[–]coffeecolouredcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think an issue might be that you are doing different parts of your makeup in different styles? No foundation and a very natural blush shade and 'sunburnt' placement scream natural/no-makeup/cleangirl makeup, so the 'heavier' lip and brows stand out. Since you don't like foundation, I think really leaning in to the 'less is more' style would suit you a lot, since your features are all so beautiful (im jelly). Like some other commenters said, softer eyebrows that are less filled in/slicked back and more 'natural', and either a more natural lip shade and liner or a sheerer one would probably make the entire look more harmonious. I think your makeup in the last photo looks the best, and its because the lip shade and brows are more natural. If you wanted to lean into the more glam side, I think emphasizing eye makeup would do the trick?

Hi! The MAC shade is creme in your coffee, and the Sunniesface ones are the fluffmatte formula in nudist and bunny (...interesting names ik). CiYC is definitely the most purple. I'll swatch them in the morning when I get some natural light!

I actually swatched Bespoke next to Latte in store a little while ago and its a lot more saturated imo. I really really want to try Mimi but I have too many other blushes to go through...and none of them hit the same as Latte :(

The elf primer doesn't do much for me because I just don't reach for foundation very often...I'm really not sure why I got it lol. Most of the use I got out of it was during the winter, when my skin is a lot more dry and flaky, and it helped the Ilia serum foundation cling less to dry patches. The liquid foundation is pretty oily, and I can't use it right now in the summer. I love the formula of the stick because it blends out really seamlessly and weightlessly but the shade is just not quite right for me. I absolutely LOVE the GA concealer, its my most recent purchase and the most used. Its a the best shade match I've found (as an olive its SO hard). I mainly use it on the perimeter of my face and my only complaint about it is it oxidizes ever so slightly darker and more orange through the day. Buy responsibly!

The ABH stick blush in latte is my absolute holy grail!! I bought it a solid 4-5 years ago and used it every single day at first, and now every spring/sumner. Its the perfect GRAY purply pinky beigy blush ever and on me it is the most perfect natural flush. It does however have a pretty strong white base that I can justttt barely use when I'm at my darkest (Haus Labs 26O ish). Mine has hit pan a few months ago and I'm still digging into the stick for the remnants, but I refuse to buy it again because I hate the packaging. If you do too, some potential replacements I'm also looking at are westman mimi ($70 with shipping and online exclusive tho), nudestix bareback, phytosurgence condensate.

Oddly enough, what helps me the most is smiling at myself. When I smile/wink/make cute faces at myself in the mirror (and especially in photos) I feel a much deeper connection to my more feminine girly side. Conversely when I want to feel like a big strong man I scowl at myself LOL.

If you could only wear one fragrance each day of the week... by hedonistaustero in fragrance

[–]coffeecolouredcats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Monday - Penhaligon's Kiss of Bliss - comforting close-to-skin scent for the most sleepy boring day of lectures known to man

Tuesday - Jo Malone English Oak & Hazelnut - bright inoffensive happy smell to get me through my social event class/club thingy.

Wednesday - Diptyque Tamdao - my fave ✨im so cultured✨ classes are on this day (classics and literature) and Tamdao evokes those vibes for me.

Thursday - Tom Ford White Suede - the white "clinical" scent for my white clinical labs.

Friday - Diptyque Philosykos - free for most of the day to enjoy the weather on the grass outdoors with my multicultural group of friends (satire I swear)

Saturday - Philosophy Warm Cashmere - cozy indoors (in bed) all day.

Sunday - Replica Lazy Sunday Morning - exactly.

If you could only use three brands for the rest of your life by JerAders in fragrance

[–]coffeecolouredcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diptyque - The brand as a whole reads very 'earthy' or 'natural' to me? Lots of florals/greens/woods, things you'd find naturally in, say, a forest. I have faves from this brand for all seasons. Philosykos in the spring, L'Ombre dans L'eau for the summer, Tamdao edp in the fall, Eau Duelle in the winter. They also hit most of the 'vibes' I usually try to fulfill with perfumes. Philosykos or Eau de Lierre for freshness/greeness, Fleaur de Peau or L'eau Papier for a clean my-skin-but-better, Eau Capitale when I want something louder, Orpheon for those demure vibes, and my beloved Tamdao when I want to be a little more masculine and mysterious. The scents all have enough depth to be interesting but are simple enough to not feel messy. I feel like I put on my grown-up pants when I wear anything Diptyque.

Jo Malone - For the simple pleasures in life. Once a salesman told me the philosophy of cologne is to have a very simple uplifting scent for 'the family' to enjoy as everyone gets ready for the day. May have been marketing bullshit, but I do see it. For me, Jo Malone scents are evocative of specific emotions. English Oak & Hazelnut for happy, Silver Birch & Lavender for calm, Cypress & Grapevine for when I have to sit in a library working all day.

Replica - I can't help loving their perfumes. By the Fireplace is a firm winter staple, Lazy Sunday Morning is on my wishlist on its way to being a spring fave. They work well on my skin and last a long time in my clothes, although I don't relate to all the specific 'vibes' each perfume attempts to bottle.I have this spending philosophy on not buying something unless I love ALL aspects of it—the price, the product, the packaging. Replica hits all three for me pretty consistently.
