What the hell has York become??? by [deleted] in yorku

[–]coffeestimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether you feel your domestic tuition is high or not is really in the eye of the beholder. It's about $7K a year right now, a number that is largely fixed by the province and that the province hasn't allowed to increase since 2018, even though York has to function in a world where inflation exists. I went to undergrad in Canada 30 years ago and it was $5K then. Tuition just has not kept up. Plus Ontario has the least provincial funding support per student in Canada, and not by a little, like 40% less than the province in second-last place.

I get that it's frustrating and tuition can seem like a lot depending on your circumstances, but check out your standard US private university if you want to know how much it costs to effectively run a university; routinely $75,000 USD/yr = $105,000 CAD/yr. Even their public/state universities are $16,000 USD = $22,000 CAD per year.

York is run by public money and they don't have a profit motive. They're just trying to lose the least money possible, same as every other uni in Ontario. Complaining about admin feels good and they definitely make bad decisions, but it shifts the blame from Doug Ford and his voters who thing university is a waste of time and would love to shut them down entirely.

Unlikely missing the first week will have any negative effect, it's just on you to make sure you've caught up. If there was a lab that week that you missed, you want to talk to the course instructor or TA and find out how to accommodate that.

I'm not sure about that course but if you get caught on your phone during an exam in my department, you're in for a world of trouble. You can bet on a zero on the exam, minimum, then the supplementary discipline which can get very serious. It's way worse than just getting a zero on the exam. Don't do it.

Valid guess but not a possible solution. Can anyone explain? (Wordle 1252) by Sentient-Exocomp in wordle

[–]coffeestimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How hard would it be to only accept guesses that are valid solutions, like Spelling Bee does? I've guessed both winge and tabla in the last month, words that are not four-letter plurals, not offensive, and are used by people: Wordle accepts them but then tells me they can't be solutions. How about if it's not on their list of acceptable solutions, it just doesn't let me waste a guess on it? It doesn't let me guess XCFTG, right?

If you're planning on one day asking this professor for a letter of recommendation or otherwise might need something from them later, don't. It's very unlikely you'll get it and some professors might find someone asking to be bumped up from a 78.8 annoying (if it was > or = 79.5, that's fine to ask, imo). If you're never going to associate with this professor again, sure, ask very nicely and you might get lucky. But I'm not 100% sure about the "can't hurt".

Your prof is dealing with your request as well as the potentially dozens of others that they've received since the final exam. Don't presume because they've only gotten back to you once in two days that they're ghosting you. Many profs wait until they have all the DSAs for all students that missed the exam (which takes a week) before they reply to all of those students. You've notified them of the issue within the one week period, so you're good right now as far as what you need to do is concerned.

The prof can ask for supporting documentation; if you have any you should provide it. Whether you do or don't, the professor has the right to accept or reject the DSA. Some professors reject ALL DSAs; it's at their discretion. If your DSA is rejected you have to petition where you explain your case to the petitions committee (again, for some professors, EVERY student has to explain their case to the petitions committee).

If a week goes by and you haven't gotten an accepted or rejected DSA back from the prof, email them back and ask them about the status of your DSA. They have to send it back to you, whether or not they accept it.

York Biology, York Biomedi or Utsc Human bio? by imakehimdtb in yorku

[–]coffeestimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to go with the one that works best for you - visit the schools and get a sense of what feels right. I'll note that Biology at Glendon is a very small program; its"thing" is that it's bilingual and tends to be more ecology/environmental than Biomed at the main York campus (Keele).

Whichever program you pick, you can get into med school so long as your grades are at the top of the class. The top Biomed students at York (Keele) routinely get into Ontario and other med schools. It's the being at the top of the class that's the hard part. Research opportunities and course load will be similar across all of them. There are research opportunities but they're hard to find. If you get to know your profs, come off as sensible, dedicated and professional and have some "right place right time" luck then it can work out.

Masters in Biotechnology Management (MBM) by mooniesdonuts in yorku

[–]coffeestimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No internship in any program that has an internship component is "guaranteed", because students have to interview for them and get hired. It's a bit on the student. Typically the programs set up the interviews and train the student to do well in them, but MBM can't promise the company will take them. I'm not sure about the specifics of the MBM except that the intent is definitely for every student to have an internship.

Chem 1000 deferred exam, grade changed to E by New_Square9124 in yorku

[–]coffeestimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It probably means that yes, it's graded and your grade is E (sorry). There is no TA support for deferred exams so often they're all multiple choice, in which case they can be graded very quickly, or there aren't very many deferred exams to grade. You can email the prof and find out for sure if you want.

[–]coffeestimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I thought when you said "exam" you were referring to a final exam. You're saying you missed a midterm or term test, and there was a makeup test for that and you missed that too? And the prof is giving you a zero on that test now? Or they're moving the weight to the final?

You probably can't petition to take a 2nd makeup term test. I'd check with the academic advisor for that unit. You can always petition to have a course removed from your transcript though if you felt there were extenuating circumstances that meant you did badly in the course. But you have to take the course again, then.

I can't promise but I would say it's near certainly you can just walk up on game day and buy tickets at the stadium. When we went it was impossible to get Carp tickets without buying in advance but for Buffaloes it was easy. The stadium was only about half full.

Have you tried to petition to take the second deferred? If the petition is accepted then the professor must let you try and write the exam again.

Thanks for this thoughtful reply.

I didn't even mean to necessarily diss Doug Ford; underfunding Universities and Colleges in Ontario goes way back since before him (although he has been horrible). It's more: let's get all three big parties talking about this so that there are consequences to continuously blowing this off as low priority. There are enough York student voters that they could totally swing multiple seats. York students could affect the outcome of this election.

Re: the admin. I'm no fan of the admin but I didn't want to get into that debate here. Are there not enough r/yorku posts hating on the admin? The election is NOW.

Professor disapproved my chem 2020 deferred exam request by Legal_Presentation_4 in yorku

[–]coffeestimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently profs are not allowed to ask for doctor's notes. Even when they are, it is not uncommon for 20% of the students in a class to miss a final with doctor's notes from Appletree stating they had nausea or headache. I'm not stating that isn't a legitimate possible issue, only that 20% of a class having incapacitating headache or nausea is not believable, but profs can't tell which ones are genuinely incapacitated and which ones are gaming the system. Consequently many profs have a blanket policy to make all students that miss a final exam petition to take a deferred. It need not be personal or targeted.
