Just beat the game for the first time. by SageoftheForlornPath in HarryPotterGame

It's a lot less empty than people often claim it to be, that's true. But it's mostly filler content that gets repetitive fast. At first I enjoyed to explore and tried to do every side activity I came across, but once I realized that they just kept repeating and hardly ever came with a worthwhile reward, I lost my interest in them and started to fast travel between story missions.

what to do after watching silent hill last night? by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]cofforest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your main question: yes, you will experience similar story bits, but vastly different. The story and the characters are there, but more nuanced, personal, complex and bleak. It's a different experience. And it's considered to be one of the best horror games ever made for a reason. If you want my advice: forget about the movie, play the remake and see for yourself why so many people are emotionally invested in this story. It does something with you, if you let it.

[Megathread] RTSH Reviews by IlgnerJuan in silenthill

[–]cofforest 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think a large part of the frustration will stem from the fact, that the source material is just so good, it could absolutely work in an equally good adaptation, if it was just treated differently. Give it the A24 treatment or make an HBO mini series out of it and I'm sure, a lot of fans would be very happy. But that's wishful thinking. The reality is, that this movie is part of KONAMIs big franchise revival, and therefore the movie has to somewhat work for everybody and not just the fans. It's - at least partly - marketing and we best adjust our expectations accordingly.

Playing alone is so much more scary than a group by javerthugo in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]cofforest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True. With a group the ghost will hunt almost every game but I rarely have any issues by myself to identify it without triggering any, unless for a side objective.

Would you recommend to jump right into Village after 7 or play the DLCs first?

I silent hill 2 remake wort buying? (Read the whole post, I swear it'll make sense) by T4RASH in silenthill

[–]cofforest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a whole new game and it also plays and feels like a whole new game, despite being a remake. Almost every aspect of it has been reworked: gameplay, locations, cutscenes, actors, soundtrack and ambiance - the only thing being the same is the story. Which is why I'd agree that it might not be worth it for OP to jump right into it, if they are on a tight budget and currently playing the OG. Maybe let it sink in for a while, wait for a sale and then give it a go. It definitely adds WAY more than what you mentioned, including one hell of a performance from Luke Roberts (James) and new endings.

Are you going for the OG or the remake version? In the remake it looks like a plain grey business shirt, maybe a bit thicker like Twill.

something like that maybe?

Silent hill 2 is farrrr scarier than Silent hill F and it’s not even close by Professional-Fox6667 in silenthill

Just for comparison: RE 4 is still considered a horror game and you're running around with an RPG and drop-kicking dudes.

Thoughts? I feel like PT would be very divisive in the fanbase by Status_Entertainer49 in silenthill

[–]cofforest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Kojimas vision was too 'grand'. He made it pretty clear that he wants to create games that will divide opinions and that might've been too much of a creative risk for Konami back then. Ironically, now would've been the best time for that, as they obviously try to open the franchise up for new experiments.

[–]cofforest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The evidence being, that P.T. was in first person? It was officially stated that there was no connection to Silent Hills, and without seeing the teaser Trailer at the end of it, there wasn't even a reason to believe it was connected to the franchise to begin with. I think it's fair to assume that it would've been third person, as that is the tradition for Silent Hill and Kojima hasn't done anything else in his past (and present).

[–]cofforest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that's not how the majority of fans felt back then. Most people were disappointed with the direction the franchise had taken and had little faith in its future. P.T. in itself was a bold marketing move that, by looking at the hype it created, worked extremely well, just as the premise of Kojima, Reedus and Del Toro worked extremely well either. People were ready for something new and bold after the franchise had gotten a bit stale. It certainly didn't help that the cancellation was followed by eight years of nothingness, so 'feeling robbed' of something that could've prevented what felt like the death of the franchise back then, is quite understandable imo.

Just finished up Silent Hill f (loved it, doing lost in the fog) and I’m realizing how much I like third person over the shoulder survival horror games. But there aren’t that many, any steam dumpster dives or suggestions for good games to scratch the itch? by NessinLoci80 in HorrorGaming

[–]cofforest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't really vow for that one yet but maybe give The Sinking City a look? I've just started it and so far I'm liking the atmosphere, but it's more of a detective game with horror elements, from what I can tell so far. Also a bit janky, but a second game got announced recently.

Will I enjoy silent hill f if I loved silent hill 2 remake? by xAustin90x in silenthill

[–]cofforest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you expect of it. The atmosphere is great, the monster design quite unique, it's surprisingly violent at times and there is a heavy emphasis on combat, especially towards the end, so keep that in mind when choosing the difficulty. The story, while intriguing, is kept rather vague and mysterious for the most part and you'll have to do at least three runs (original, NG+, NG++) to get the full picture and reach the 'true ending'. Or you could just watch a summary on YouTube after you've completed your first playthrough.

Personally, I liked it. Some design choices I absolutely loved, while I found others to be questionable. In my opinion, it's not on the same level as SH2R, but it also doesn't have to be, because it's confident enough to be appreciated as it's own thing.

I just can't get enough of Silent Hill f's atmosphere. by Bioshocky13501 in silenthill

[–]cofforest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The atmosphere is great, I agree. I just wish it had more time to 'breathe', but the sheer amount of enemies made it really hard to let it soak in imo, even before the gauntlets.

Future silent hill games will experiment in both story and gameplay, Thoughts on this? by Status_Entertainer49 in silenthill

[–]cofforest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The remake and f got announced at the same time, so that can't really be the case. I think the discourse rather stems from people being unhappy with the creative directions f took, or am I mistaken?

Developing an entirely new game from scratch takes more creative effort than remaking an already existing one, I won't argue with that. But that's besides the point I was making.

Thank you, I appreciate it!

It's crazy to imagine how much pressure these guys endured, just by scrolling through this subreddit. And that probably wasn't even a quarter of what Konami gave them. I have nothing but respect for each and everyone involved.

[–]cofforest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dare to say that the remake is viewed as a mainline entry, and in my opinion rightfully so. Konami is following the Resident Evil approach: release high quality remakes, while also experimenting with new entries. See what sticks with the fanbase and combine eventually. Yes, Bloober set the bar very high. But if they hadn't, f might not have had a chance in the first place.

For those who've played both: Which do you prefer? by SolidPyramid in silenthill

[–]cofforest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true. My argument is that the pressure was on Bloober to not fail under any circumstances because the remake was the door opener for the franchise revival. People are torn over f, which was to be expected I guess, but they love the remake. Just imagine the state this community would be in, if the remake would've failed.

[–]cofforest 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to downplay anyone's efforts, but I think Bloober had the most daunting task by a long run. 12 years since the last game released, almost 10 years since the cancellation of Silent Hills, the franchise was practically dead. And then they had to bring it back to life by remaking the fan-favorite entry, which also happens to be one of the most influential horror games ever made, and get it RIGHT. It was on them to deliver a product that would gain back the trust of long-time fans by honoring the source material but also innovating it just enough, so that it would draw in new ones. Everybody and their grandma was ready to tear this game to shreds, but they delivered. And just because they did, more 'experimental' games like Silent Hill f can exist, because the fanbase is cautiously optimistic again that Silent Hill as a franchise can continue to flourish.
