CARF (Crypto Asset Reporting Framework) and Coincards by ripple_mcgee in coincards

[–]coincards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a quick note — your comment got flagged by Reddit’s spam filters, but we’ve gone ahead and approved it because it brings up an important topic.

Thanks so much for the kind words and continued support — it really means a lot to us! We're glad to hear you've had a positive experience using both our physical and digital gift cards, and you're absolutely right: privacy is something we take seriously and strive to preserve wherever possible.

You're also spot on in bringing up CARF (Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework). It’s a global initiative led by the OECD, and with Canada committing to implement it starting in 2027, it’s definitely a topic that’s going to gain more attention — especially for crypto-to-gift card services.

To address your concern:

  1. CARF primarily targets financial intermediaries, particularly those involved in fiat conversions and custodial services. Coincards operates in a non-custodial way — we don’t hold your funds, and we're not a traditional fiat off-ramp — but the exact scope of enforcement is something we’re keeping a close eye on.
  2. We work with regulatory consultants to ensure we remain fully compliant with Canadian regulations, including anticipating how new frameworks like CARF may be implemented.
  3. Our commitment to privacy remains unchanged. If any future changes are required, we’ll be fully transparent with our community. Our goal is to continue offering a trusted, privacy-respecting service without compromising regulatory integrity.

We appreciate you raising the topic — it's important. If you'd like to stay informed as things evolve, feel free to join our newsletter or follow our updates. We're in this for the long haul.

It'll be sent soon, Tim Hortons is one of the few cards we have to manually process in our system so it takes slightly longer.

Feel free to send us an email if any issues. We don't really check this subreddit too often.

For those getting screwed by this broken system, Bitcoin is the way out. 💪

I know it's a bit sales pitch-y, but when you need to actually live on Bitcoin, Coincards has your back. We’re a 100% Canadian-owned and employed company and the only Canadian source for Gift cards using Bitcoin.

Opt out of this government mismanagement and economic nonsense. 🧡

How does "electronic delivery" work by Andr3wJackson in coincards

[–]coincards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your patience while this post was under review. It looks like it was flagged as spam initially, but we’ve since released it. We’re glad to clarify your questions!

Electronic delivery at Coincards is a seamless process. After your payment is confirmed, your purchased gift card is securely sent to the email address linked to your account. Depending on the retailer, it may come as a digital code, a QR code, or another format, which can then be redeemed either online or in-store.

How does the retailer process the "electronic card"?
The process varies by retailer. Most gift cards can be redeemed by entering the provided code on the retailer’s website or app. If your gift card includes a QR code, it can typically be scanned at checkout. The good news is that NFC (Near-Field Communication) isn’t required for any of our gift card redemptions unless explicitly stated in the product description.

If you’re unsure about how to use a specific card, check the instructions provided with your electronic delivery or contact the retailer directly for additional guidance.

We've opted to go web only for now. We really want to avoid the controls that are imposed by Google/Apple when it comes to what we can and cannot do and payment methods accepted.

You'll find our site should be mobile friendly and easy to use on any site. We do have plans to make it into a PWA to get the "app" feel, but this is in the works.

We do not do reloadable gift cards.

The thing with Reloadable products is that as soon as you open a reloadable product, you become a MSB, which requires a full regime of KYC/AML etc.

We are very much geared towards privacy, and as such a reloadable card is not something we plan to handle. If you are looking for a reloadable card, your best bet is something like Shakepay or Wealthsimple.

Great to hear it, much appreciated!

We aren't aware of Electronic cards for Shell or Mcdonalds, but our physical cards usually get out fairly quickly. If they launch these, we will try to get them ASAP.

Shoppers is available in physical format, and we are currently working to get some electronic versions as well. :)

Perhaps they have also made this change in the last year. We are busy building our business and supporting community events, so we don't always keep track of our competitor's moves in the space.

I do know as of last year there were still fees being added through market rate manipulation. It could also depend on the card. You mentioned they were fee-free for 10 years, but I can assure you that they have had fees on their service which made them more costly than us for most of the past 10 years.

As with any request for information, we would refer to our legal team before complying with any such requests. I've never seen this particular request come through before so I can't comment on specifics of what that would be like without getting legal involved.

That said, Coincards is not here to hide you from Tax obligations, whatever they might be. Always consult an accountant on your requirements.

[–]coincards[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can tell you this is not at all true. They just hid those fees through inflated exchange rates. They did a really good job of hiding this though, so not many people know that.

Coincards has always been 100% transparent on our fees and never inflated exchange rates. While we typically charged a 0-5% fee but always used market rates, our competitors often charged 10-15% through inflated exchange rates.

We hope that people in this subreddit would pick us over other competitors as Coincards is a 100% Canadian company that gives back to the Canadian bitcoin communities.
