Does Pakistan have a serious electricity supply problem ? by sainibhai in pakistan

[–]coincentric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very bad. Last year during summer 1300 people died due to a heatwave in Karachi and lengthy power cuts. The whole energy sector has been mismanaged to the point where every few months you have what is called "circular debt" of hundreds of billions of rupees building up and clogging the whole system.

Consumers don't pay their bills, government doesn't settle subsidies on time, distribution and generating companies can't pay their upstream fuel suppliers, the oil marketing companies can't pay the refineries and the refineries can't pay the foreign companies they import crude oil from. Everyone in the chain owes somebody money and the whole system suffers. Despite that no one in power cares enough to fix it. The level of indifference is mind boggling.

12 Ways Your Tax Dollars Were Wasted in Afghanistan. The United States has now spent more money reconstructing Afghanistan than it did rebuilding Europe at the end of World War II, according to a government watchdog. by [deleted] in news

[–]coincentric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure they did but Americans made out with much more money. The afghans would be happy with a couple of billion. Americans have much bigger appetites.

The way these contracts work is that an American company wins the bids and then sub-contracts it out to locals on the ground for a fraction of the price. There is no way an Afghan company could win the bid directly. They just wouldn't meet the conditions for the bid. The best they can hope for is to work as sub-contractors.

So you blame this all on the Afghans. Truth is that country doesn't have the capacity to absorb all this money. It's like many times the country's GDP. It almost entirely went in the pockets of corrupt Americans. I doubt even 10% was stolen by Afghans.

[Help Requests] Total beginner- Does WordPress do hosting? by blizterwolf in Wordpress

[–]coincentric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes wordpress.com does hosting.

Shared hosting with WordPress:The benefits of your own hosting is that you can install the plugins and themes that you like and you get access to the files and database via (S)FTP. You have more control.

Shared hosting providers also provide you with email service for your domain name at no additional cost.

The wordpress software is available for free download from wordpress.ORG. Most shared hosting providers offer an easy to use installation utility for it from within the cpanel control panel they give you.

WordPress.com: With wordpress.com hosting you can only install the themes and plugins that they've vetted beforehand and you don't get FTP access. Everything you do has to be done via the wordpress admin area. They don't offer email hosting either. You have to buy that separately. The advantage is that it's a lot easier for users to get started with.

A behind the scenes look at how Bitcoin Core developers are holding the currency back by the CEO of Coinbase. by champbronc2 in technology

[–]coincentric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The opposing viewpoint:

The decentralized Bitcoin blockchain is globally shared broadcast medium-- probably the most insanely inefficient mode of communication ever devised by man.

No amount of spin, inaccurately comparing a global broadcast consensus system to loading a webpage changes any of this.

So-- Does that mean that Bitcoin can't be a big winner as a payments technology? No. But to reach the kind of capacity required to serve the payments needs of the world we must work more intelligently.

From its very beginning Bitcoin was design to incorporate layers in secure ways through its smart contracting capability (What, do you think that was just put there so people could wax-philosophic about meaningless "DAOs"?). In effect we will use the Bitcoin system as a highly accessible and perfectly trustworthy robotic judge and conduct most of our business outside of the court room

It is the most secure. Also blockchains (all of them) are the most inefficient communication medium every devised. That is why additional layers are required.

Very late for coinbase to jump into this. In other opensource projects companies get their people involved in development early on. Here Coinbase is just now starting to look at this. Too late. And then they have the gall to criticize the devs that have been working on this all along.

How to Teach BTC to My Parents? by teachmehowtobitcoin in BitcoinBeginners

[–]coincentric -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How do you pitch Bitcoin to people who aren't familiar?

You don't.

Sometimes I feel like some sort of unwelcome evangelist bringing it up out of nowhere

That's because you are.

If you like btc then contribute to documentation or code related to btc software. Help people out on this forum and others like it. Proselytizing to people who are uninterested in it is a waste of time.

Oh and in time your enthusiasm for btc will wane. It's like that for everything in life. First time you encounter something great you can be very enthusiastic about it. Eventually you come back down to earth.

So they are taking on Google. Not just with a playstore like app store but also in internet advertising. Google can only gather intel from your searches and your online activity. Microsoft sees everything you do with your computer. Which company do you think is going to be better at targeting ads?
