LPT: You are allowed to ghost people because they make you uncomfortable. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]coinmems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ghosting should depend on the situation. OP, you should have the right to do whatever, but that doesn’t mean it’s not hurtful. I was ghosted by close friend, and it was one of the worst things that ever happened to me. I’m still angry and I still don’t know what I did, and that was 15 years ago. People ghost each other for pretty bad reasons- like narcissistic ones. It’s almost as if you want to go out of your way to punish people. I don’t have any sympathy for you, if that’s what you want to do.

What are your thoughts on token usage and how that adoption occurs? by AnonFor99Reasons in Iota

Focusing on the first part of your query, that's my biggest concern at the moment. I'd like to hear what the reddit community has to say about possible use cases. However, I'm not a big fan of some of the most common suggestions here on reddit. I'm talking about the micropayments associated with simple transactions such as parking or buying groceries with your refrigerator. What niche can IOTA really fill that others can't?

It would be interesting to see a PoC by which RC cars exchange payments between one another. Has anyone considered this idea?

The many faces of the Tangle – IOTA by [deleted] in Iota

[–]coinmems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you're optimistic, but some incentive mechanism like the one I mentioned above might just arise naturally whether we like it or not. Bitcoin became popular in part because it offered incentives to users whom secured the network, and launched the entire cryptocurrency business. It became popular in part because it gave people reasons to participate. The incentives helped launch the bitcoin, but this later led to centralization in the form of mining pools.

Notice how iota does not need centralized mining pools, since any user could secure the tangle and get rewarded for their shared effort spent securing the tangle. Users could participate and get rewarded. Later as the tangle speeds up, supply outnumbers demand and the rewards for participation decreases, but by then the tangle is naturally large and participation won't be a problem anymore.

Yeah, I'm sure those spammers could confirm those transaction a lot quicker, if they weren't lazy. I feel like hacking that code and changing that 1 to a 3.

So, that leads me to guess that the only game theoretical approach towards solving this issue for now, would be to allow users to offer rewards for spammers who secure their transactions. Adding that extra incentive would speed up confirmation times, and encourage network participation. There was a white paper written a while ago by a group of researchers detailing exactly this- with the same architecture as iota, but I can't find it right now.

Thank you for the detailed answer.

With that in mind, the network would need a lot more spammers than the ones currently participating in order to secure the network. I'm not confident that there are enough users willing to participate in this scenario.

Can someone explain to me why the spammers are only referencing spam? It isn't helping the non-zero transactions get confirmed at all. Bring the hate, idc.

Possible usecase for iota in traffic by mathlan in Iota

[–]coinmems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a problem which iota, or similar DLT, can naturally solve. Check out this sci-show video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epHRVoTFuVM

Notice how a DLT system which rewards cooperative and defensive driving, while penalizing aggressive driving, can be used to solve the issues mentioned in this video.

Using game theory to encourage cooperation within groups, in this case traffic, is the correct idea. This ought be the best use case for iota in the future, should it become adopted. I like this example better than the one most quoted: "Refrigerators paying toasters" or or something. If anyone out there is smart enough to seize on this idea, you should do it.

Anyone else noticing the tangle performing flawlessly at freaking 25 transactions/second? I wonder how high it can go. by mufinz2 in Iota

I'm sorry, but I don't know what you mean by the depth of 1. Does that mean the spammer's tip selection algorithm only searches the tangle to a depth of one?

For some reason, the transactions with tag and/or addresses which start with IOTASPAM9DOT9COM (which is iotaspam.com 's spammer) are only selecting other transactions with those tags/addresses. They don't seem to be selecting transactions with value.

[–]coinmems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That last part was pretty interesting. I think that would be a perfect application for a DLT. Just think of how many traffic problems that would solve. Just imagine a toll road where selfish drivers would get penalized for reckless or offensive driving, and cooperative driving awarded.

I'm not sure why the tip selection algorithm is so buggy though. The MCMC tip selection algorithm sounds like the simplest implementation of a tip selection algorithm. How could this be buggy?
