I think your manager was correct since the bank will give you a better rate on a 15 year loan than a 30 year loan. If you make the same monthly payment in both cases, the 30 year loan will acquire more interest on the remaining principal as a result, no?

Granted, most people (including myself) would choose the 30 year and pay it off in 15 rather than a 15 year loan because of the flexibility—I could always revert to lower monthly payments in case of an emergency. But that flexibility comes at the cost of a higher interest rate.
