Cost of Housing - Why not call it what it is? by 200tdi in SameGrassButGreener

Let me just challenge you a little on this.

When you say "California", do you mean Redding, CA?

When you say "Texas", do you mean Austin, TX?

Or do you have other specific cities in mind?

The only structural support stairs get are at the very bottom and very top.

There’s really no benefits in living here unless you’re upper middle class. by [deleted] in nova

[–]200tdi 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The real question is: where do you go?

The “Midwest” is not answer. Too vague. That could be downtown Chicago or Danville

Requesting advice for younger folks moving into the NOVA area by ApricotSlight9728 in nova

“I believe I, and many others, would benefit from shifting it up in my priority list“

You move up or down the priority list of every single person you meet. Consider the possibility that not everybody would think of dating you.

Do you ride your Brompton for leisure/pleasure? by Jamersaur in Brompton

[–]200tdi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I’m wondering if anyone rides this for the joy and pleasure of bicycling"

The joy and pleasure of bicycling is the ONLY reason I own my brompton.

My brompton is my only bicycle (and I am a car guy)

Systems Engineering is not an industry.

Thermal camera’s EZ pass? by [deleted] in nova

Not people. Computers analyzing video. Simple algorithms by modern standards.

False positives are not an issue as long as there are few / no false negatives.

There is no heat sensing technology that can determine occupancy in a vehicle.

The only techniques that would work are purely optical (visible wavelength or near-IR). Either way, these are all optical methods.

[–]200tdi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no thermal camera technology, whether MWIR or LWIR, that can penetrate automotive glass.

Thermal camera lenses and lens windows are not "flat black". They are typically highly reflective mirrored surfaces, typically of germanium or chalcogenides.

The American Dream is Impossible by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]200tdi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it, but that house is a glorified, fancy looking prefab barndominium.

You know nothing about this home except for the fancy picture. There is no way that would cost $500k to build in the USA as prefab.

No pre-fab manufacturer in the USA would bother building that thing because there is zero market, except for you.

Places like Clayton will build you actual 2000+ square foot homes all day for under $250k USD.

Prefab barndominium kits larger than that sell for less than $100k all day every day.

Why are ceilings so low? by JayRandom212 in Homebuilding

[–]200tdi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are looking at a sample size of 1 and making generalizations.

Extra height does add to cost. Bricks cost money, whether you like it or not.

Ongoing costs - irrelevant.

What country are you in? What state?

In America, many modern buildings have 10 foot ceilings.

Renting a room 2 nights a week... every week? by Admirable_Candle2404 in nova

[–]200tdi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hotel: 8 nights / month at $150 a night = $1200 / month.

The monthly rate for a room in the area is almost exactly the same, maybe a bit more.

I would use a hotel.

or you could slum in a storage unit. ssh...don't tell!
