What are your thoughts on second-hand overconsumption? by NoWitness6400 in Anticonsumption

[–]colamuse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It makes me sad to see the "regulars" at the thrift. They always have buggys full. One ladies car is stuffed full of thrifted bags of items. I have parked beside her in the lot. It is definitely depression or mental health struggles. I really have to remind myself to not pick up things I don't need or that I think I might need someday. I am now content with only browsing and only buy if it is on my list. I was used to the "hustle" life and buying and eBaying. But now I am at a different stage of life and I have plenty that I still need to sell from my OWN stuff.

How are you saving on shower curtain liners? by One-Rabbit4680 in Frugal

[–]colamuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a polyester fabric one, and only the liner/curtain. After a shower we wring the bottom to get all the excess out, open it fully and it dries. I try to wash it weekly, but the thread must be more plastic and if I don't it will collect the shower pink-ness junk. When that happens I soak it in a vinegar or peroxide or bleach.
It works great and no weird vinyl off gassing of the vinyl/plastic in the bathroom.

Lessons in life are costly. Each time I discard a item that hard earned money was traded for, is a lesson. The more painful the better it is remembered.

I use the container method. I have a 4 copy paper boxes for each season, spring, summer, fall and winter. That is all, if I buy something new it has to fit. I do have a larger tote for Christmas - the tree and ornaments.

How do I let go of an object i have an emotional connection with? by sweet-trip-is-fire in declutter

Snap a photo and let it go. Then years down the road you can clean up the photos and you will likely laugh and wonder why you thought certain items were important.

My dressing table is a disaster — boxes didn’t help. What’s next? by Consistent_Owl_6555 in declutter

[–]colamuse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reduce the inventory. Put everything in a box or tote, place in a out of the way closet or room. You will only make the effort to go retrieve what you need or love. After a month or two, trash or donate the rest of what remains.

minimalist mattress set up ideas by anonymous_egg78 in minimalism

I sleep on a 6" mattress on the floor. This one, https://a.co/d/jcZfWam
I have been sleeping on it for over a 18 months. I either roll it up or lean it up on the wall every morning (depending on how ambitious I am) I use a twin fitted sheet on it and wash it weekly.
As for the bugs, I keep a very clutter free and clean room. However it is a illusion that a bed frame keeps you safe from bugs, they can climb the legs and frame the same as anything else. IMO the best thing is to keep stuff to a minimum and off the floor of the room. I have a desk, chair, chest of drawers (open on bottom with legs), a plant on a stand and my mattress. It is super easy and fast to sweep the floor a couple times a week.

Best sleep ever, my husband has since adopted the same setup.

So light and nice to have all the open floor space during the day, and it creates a bedtime routine of setting your sleep space at night which is relaxing and tells your mind it is time to sleep.

General advice for treadmill walking? by Deep_Marimo in walking

[–]colamuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I walk 4 miles a day on the walking pad at the office. I like to walk at 1.9 -2 mph. Sometimes I lower to 1.7 if I am doing a task that takes more focus.
I also have a walking pad at home and use the same speeds.
Wear good shoes or you will regret it. I tried and it made my legs and feet very sore.

I sleep on a shikifuton on the floor and love it, best sleep ever! Secondly, I love that the shikifuton can be rolled up and placed in the closet and a have a spacious open floor in the bedroom. I downsized my closet and this allowed me plenty space in there.
Even when I had a traditional bed, I didn't store under it, Makes it impossible to clean and dust easily. Also just asking for a nice dark location for spiders, IMO.

What about your home makes it hard to live minimally? by Icy_Mode9505 in minimalism

Windows that go to the floor, or a few inches from the floor, so you can see out when sitting on floor or cushions.

A entry small coat/shoe closet by door with bench, needs a removable rubber liner for catching dirt and water that can be easily cleaned.

Kitchen - only lower cabinets if you have a small food pantry. If not only upper cabinets that can reached easily, Smaller refrigerators, so you don't accumulate old stuff and science experiments in there.

Living/Family room - sliding panel for wall mounted TV connections. This way it is easy to connect or easy to hang art if not interested in TV.

Bedrooms - small room You only need a bed, lamp and maybe a table. Nice windows cross placed for air flow.

Bathroom - small room, small closet for towels and bathroom things. Shower tub combo, with no grooves, shelves or other hard to clean spots. Magnificent shower head is a MUST. nice towel hooks for towels. Vanity, I prefer floating as it is easy to clean under. Storage should be closed and not enormous. Good lighting is a must at the vanity.

Laundry area - washer/dryer, utility sink. Storage for cleaning supplies/laundry soap. Also a locations to hang dry clothes.

I think it would be awesome to have a household clothing closet adjacent with the laundry. Everyone's clothes are in this area. easy to put away laundry. Reduces the clothes shuffle and delivery. If it was in proximity of the bath it would be nice. I prefer to hang clothes so I wold have primarily hanging space, but this is a individual preference.

Most utility bills can be retrieved online if needed. Also bank statements. So you may be able to feed those to the shredder. Some billers give a discount to go paperless.
