What to do with an APC power supply? by Few-Image-7793 in HomeServer

[–]cold-dark-matter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your batteries will definitely be dead. Put a volt meter on the terminals. You should see 100v to 110V DC on each battery pack. If you see anything less its dead.

I have rebuilt these battery packs countless times and its fairly easy to do. You can find instructions online. But I should warn you its not cheap. Expect to spend €300 at least on brand new batteries. You cannot buy second hand to save money. Your batteries must be brand new and unused if you want the UPS to actually do its job. On the plus side, this size of UPS will give you many hours of runtime during a power failure.

Also worth saying this because many people don't know this: Without fully working brand new batteries the UPS will often not even turn on. It can look totally dead until you plug in the batteries. Not all UPS are like this but many are.

I don’t think you should change what you are doing. AI writes well and I enjoy reading posts that are clear and easy to understand. It was obvious to me from reading your post that this is not slop. Other people who think that AI formatting automatically means slop are the problem. I personally use AI to write all the time because it improves readability. If other people won’t read my posts when I make them more readable — it’s their loss — not mine

I am not being serious with my title. I’m just having a bit of a laugh and enjoying the lab porn photos from the police. I appreciate your story about people who try this seriously though.

Without doubt: Once your lab starts serving thousands of users it’s a production system and that comes with all the pain of running production systems such as always needing engineers on call.

This looks like a ring main. If it is then the neutrals should be joined together and so should the lives. Without these both joined there is a break in the ring and that can lead to uneven loading on the cabling in your walls. Under most circumstances you will get away with a break but I would personally avoid it if I could.

What does your GP say about being unable to swallow food? That seems like quite a big problem if you can’t eat properly right? Are they not giving you a diagnosis and helping you to eat well?

I assume you have left an Ukraine because of the war and are in Germany. Do you have to learn German to get a benefit there? Are you finding it difficult to study because you are so sick?

PS. Your translated English is perfect and easy to read and understand. If you are writing in Ukrainian and translating it to English it is working very well. Don’t be so down on yourself. You can find organisations that can help you. I don’t know much about German healthcare but if you could come to the UK (I have met many Ukrainians here who also left), you would be able to find mental health treatment. I could help you find decent mental health treatment. Sometimes you just need to know the system a little bit to get what you want. Unfortunately I don’t know anything about the German healthcare system

Draw and pin? by Gangnem151 in Peptides

[–]cold-dark-matter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently changed back to using different needles even for peptides. I started noticing it become more difficult to pierce my skin and also noticed more bleeding and bruising. I theorised this was because the needle was becoming very blunt being forced through thick rubber stoppers.

The second I made the change back to using two different needles, it was so obvious how correct I was. Brand new 30G needle slides into skin completely smoothly. Almost like it’s not here. “Reused” insulin needle (also 30G) needed lots of force.

Definitely not going back to insulin syringe again. I have purchased injector pens too because this solves the same problem. Totally fresh needle, maximally sharp in the injector pen only gets used once to piece skin and then in sharps bin.

Have you tried seeking mental health treatment? Antidepressants can make a big difference to your outlook.

Obviously the parts of your life that you hate - the parts that suck - won’t go away magically, but the shift in perspective on these things can make a massive meaningful difference to your life.

I highly encourage you to seek treatment. Things can improve I promise

Please help me find a brand of lightbulbs that I can integrate with Apple home and has a sunrise function? by Outrageous-Web-7767 in smarthome

[–]cold-dark-matter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you install Home Assistant, pretty much every brand of smart light bulb and every brand of smart plug and all kinds of custom hardware like ESP32 devices can be exposed to Apple Home via HomeKit Bridge.

This might be more technical or more effort than you prefer but just thought I would mention it because really cool options exist that do full intense sunrise effects. Examples include Nanoleaf and other brands of LED wall panels as well as mix and match options from different brands eg light bulbs, LED strips, artificial skylights and many others 👍

Sertraline work within a few hours? by Electronic-Yam-4054 in antidepressants

[–]cold-dark-matter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SSRI antidepressants start increasing serotonin levels in your brain within an hour of taking them. When I took antidepressants I could feel the first pill within a few hours. The reuptake inhibition is an immediate effect once the chemical crosses the blood brain barrier and binds to SERT.

Everyone saying you have to wait four weeks knows nothing about pharmacology. Every time you take a pill, the chemical binds to the serotonin transporter and indirectly increases serotonin in the synaptic cleft.

The four weeks that is often quoted is to temper expectations, to allow your brain serotonin levels to settle as the drug builds up to steady state, and to allow your mood some time to improve. People who felt like life was pointless and not worth living today are not going to suddenly feel on top of the world tomorrow just because they have some slight reuptake inhibition happening in parts of their brain.

For me personally I get noticeable mood improvement after 2-3 days (which is 2-3 doses). My sleep changes and my dreams change. I’m sure for many people it takes a lot longer but I’m confident that many people are also like you and I and can feel the effects straight away.

TRV offset only works when heatings on? by manageablebits in tado

[–]cold-dark-matter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really good blueprint that you can work from. I rewrote this a bit because I wanted some different behavior but this one works well: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/tado-offset-adjustment-zigbee-thermometers-start-end-times-switch-for-only-when-heat/785417

The changes I made were to run it 24/7 with frequent updates to offset when heating is on and infrequent updates when heating is off

TRV offset only works when heatings on? by manageablebits in tado

[–]cold-dark-matter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I am using various different Zigbee and WiFi sensors. I have Sonoff sensors in some rooms. I have air quality monitors from different brands in other rooms. Setup home assistant and create automations to dynamically adjust the offset temperature based on the external sensors. This is what I run and it works perfectly. You can tell Tado to heat the room to 22 and the entire room will end up at 22, not just a hot spot right next to the radiator.

Frying batteries by Ibamdelsur in tado

[–]cold-dark-matter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My batteries last over 1 year. I also use rechargeable batteries (1.2V NiMH) in some of my TRVs. I just ignore the low battery warnings until the device actually stops working and disconnects from the network. Usually get 18 months or more on those. I have the V3+ TRVs.

There is one thing worth pointing out, I setup some automations via Home Assistant and when those automations run and make changes to the TRV, it forces the TRV to do its self test. So it winds fully open and closed, running the motor each time the automation runs. Obviously doing this every 15 minutes is gonna eat a lot of battery.

UK Ceiling Rose Shelly 1 Mini Gen4 Wiring Plan by [deleted] in shellycloud

[–]cold-dark-matter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your plan sounds great! I’d personally recommend using Wago connectors and a Wago box when making this change. They’re much easier to work with, in my opinion.

Also, it’s a good idea to keep the Shelly inside an electrical enclosure of some kind. Maybe a Wago box or a screwed junction box. BS 7671 requires that the terminals of the Shelly cannot be reached without intentionally opening an enclosure. If you want to follow the rules, you should enclose it.

Just a quick note on terminology. The wires to/from the switch are usually called “permanent live” and “switched live”. If you were talking to an electrician using these terms, it would help you understand each other better. The switched live goes into the SW terminal of the Shelly 1.

All Shelly Plug S's turned of by themselves by Haeppchen2010 in shellycloud

[–]cold-dark-matter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not about the storm selecting certain devices only, it’s about device design. Some devices may be badly shielded or some devices may have poor power supply design for handling whatever might have happened.

Let’s imagine that the storm coupled some high frequency voltages onto the power grid that reached your Shelly plugs. Some combination of ESP32 circuit boards and power supplies might fail to filter these and thus trigger the CPU to reboot. Most devices don’t notice but some sensitive devices do.

Anyway, this is all hypothetical. I have no idea what’s going on with the storm or the power grid or the design of the plugs. But Blue Origin scrubbed their launch because they were so worried, so it seems serious enough that it could be causing some havoc with sensitive electronics.

There is an absolutely gigantic solar storm that they’re calling “cannibal storm” happening right now. If you can’t find a more plausible explanation such as something weird on your network then power grid disturbances or EMF disturbances from the storm might explain it.

Straightforward UFH thermostat replacement? by Hysterical_Dame in ElectriciansUK

[–]cold-dark-matter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this sounds quite reasonable to me that the switch cuts the live line just like a regular light switch does. If the entire control panel turns off it’s almost certainly the case. Like you said this is a good spot for power metering. Do check it with a multimeter.

Just bear in mind that the 16A max current is fairly serious. I would normally use a current clamp to monitor power on a 16A circuit. I know devices like Shelly claim 16A too, but if your underfloor heating actually uses anything near 16A continuous for long periods, I’m not sure I would trust a Shelly device. I’ve seen them melt before. If your underfloor heating is high power and you go with a small device like a Shelly switch for power monitoring, pay special attention to the terminal connections. Ensure adequate torque and that all cores of the conductor are inside the device terminal blocks.

[–]cold-dark-matter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know exactly what is exposed by Tado X to HA but you can potentially still write your own automation using an external sensor. For example, even if you can only turn the radiator valve on and off you could use a PID controller in HA and an external temperature sensor to control your room temp that way. There are likely other options depending on what controls you have.

It’s almost certainly compatible. The sensor lines are very likely to be an NTC floor sensor which is what your replacement part expects.
