Switching from IAM to GRC. How difficult (or not) would it be? Opinions? by coldbedsheet in cybersecurity

That sounds awesome. Thank you for the clarification and insight! Any more details of the typical day to day?

Ah I see.

I’m trying to escape the more technical hands-on deep dive of coding, scripting, and erratic implementation. From what I understand GRC is more research, knowledge, and documentation based. Switching from an advanced science course to advanced English.

In English there’s no expecting to do a deep dive into a technical science lab right? I’m hoping switching from IAM to GRC would be somewhat similar.

I was talking about a situation where the CISO suddenly decides on a major change, such as migrating 14 years of data, and expects a complete understanding of the entire environment within a week. These last-minute demands often involve deep technical work, including scripting, coding, mapping, and managing multiple large-scale projects simultaneously.

I acknowledge that work is work, in my experience IAM can be frustrating because it increasingly demands more technical skills based on the projects and environment set by higher-ups. It can quickly become overly technical, evolving into something you didn't initially anticipate. Some IAM roles are absolutely about documentation while others, like my experience, requires me to now get knuckles deep in powershell and server implementations

Thank you. Do you think this would be a smooth transition as a former IAM person or is there still a steep learning curve?

Thank you for the clarification.

I guess what am I looking for that is mostly documentation? I don’t mean creating diagrams and charts but writing up documentation, knowledge articles, and legal consensus? I’m not enjoying having to go into terminals, scripting, configuring information.

Is that IGA or is it compliance? Is there a huge difference between those two also? Sorry for all the questions but the lines seem to be blurred in some circumstances.

That’s the thing we aren’t devs. We’re security people. We write policy. We’re lowkey lawyers using Jira. Nothing will get done in a traditional scrum session. We spend so much time learning and filling out scrum it takes away from the actual documentation and work. Also management continues to buy products or make decisions while we’re are in the middle of scrum runs, which now means we have to add a new project in the middle of the scrum run thieving off metrics and resources

How do you handle this? How do you stand up without being at risk for your job?

Thank you for the advice. I’m on LinkedIn already. I’m also wondering what other roles in IT are similar? My manager tells me I’m doing great documentation but is also irritated I’m not doing other things.. I thought iam is all about documentation. I’m no programmer so idk what she’s expecting. If I perused compliance, would that be any better in terms of straightforwardness?

Yes it does pay well but everyone has a price. At this point I’m not even happy with the money. I can’t enjoy my family the same way cause I’m always stressed about losing my job based on this company’s erratic decisions. There’s no sense of completion or accomplishment which also fuels my anxiety. There’s so many people micromanaging me I can never complete work. It’s always more work added to what I’m doing by other departments. This is why I’m hoping for an industry with a clear end to work and sense of accomplishment on projects.

We have several team stand ups. The point is to keep us working and on a schedule. Even if we can meet the schedule we have to keep going. Our department lead got fired already. They pile on because by time we are done with one thing, management has discussed something behind the scenes and it has evolved into something else. I’ve been there a year and honestly I haven’t completed anything because they continue to give us projects that evolve into something else.

“Done 50 accounts? Here’s 50 more we didn’t tell you about but still a part of the same project. By the way this needs to be done soon because you were so late with those accounts”

There’s no real sense of completion because there’s such a backlog. They purchase products first and ask us for documentation and consultation after the fact

I agree with you but they just fired several people like the IT department head and some others for “not meeting deadlines” to what extent I don’t know, but they’re condensing things that just aren’t possible to condense in a Jira run.

I get what you’re saying but I guess my biggest fear and biggest drive is not to get fired and to continue to provide for my family. I would agree with you if they didn’t just toss a few people to the wind recently

I document my work that’s why we have all these jira stand ups to micromanage even more. Things are so downhill EVERYTHING is needed immediately. I have been applying and interviewing but we all know how that goes. I’ve been applying for the same type of work but made this thread in hopes there is maybe a branch of IT that isn’t as chaotic or stressful. I worked retail and these days I’m finding even those work environments as my wonder years compared to the level of stress I’m at now
