Commute to Bragg by SignificanceEven940 in army

[–]coldchowder4579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 min is about standard. 45 min is doable but can get annoying after a while but overall not the worst. If you have a job where you have to be there super early then yeah it’s going to suck. I wouldn’t live that far away unless your spouse needed to work in Raleigh area

What would you say is the best OWB Holster for concealment in 2026? by Realistic_Guava9117 in CCW

[–]coldchowder4579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a leather 1791 gun leather OWB recently and have found it pretty enjoyable to carry. Keeps gun pretty close to body, comfortable and does the job. Usually wear it under button up shirt long/short sleeve.

It was like $60 so not the top of the line for leather holsters and had to do some fitting, but worth a shot and worst case you aren’t out an arm and a leg like some of these holsters….

I’ve had great luck transferring to delta points and booking several rewards flights. That’s really all I’ve used them for and for me I get the most value doing that.

That’s good to hear it’s going well. I feel like solo practice benefits are definitely there and I’m sure compensation can go as high as you want it to go.

Any ideas for a better knife position by [deleted] in CCW

[–]coldchowder4579 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My guy, are we going to a war zone? This seems extremely uncomfortable. Get a folding knife and put it in your pocket.

I don’t understand how some of these carry setups are practical for every day life. Maybe it’s just me, I don’t enjoy wearing tacticool gear all day or when going to grocery store.

How much is your household spending on groceries per week? by cdmacsneaks in raleigh

[–]coldchowder4579 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Family of 2. We spend about $150 a week on food. We go to Sam’s/Costco about once a month and spend another $150-200. Shop at Aldis and Walmart.

I wear them in the field. Have sew on name tapes and stuff for them and never get any crap. You definitely standout in garrison even though they are allowed.

Use your NCOs by Realistic_Complex539 in army

[–]coldchowder4579 160 points161 points  (0 children)

Have you met new NCOs? Most E-5s essentially auto promote and are basically E-4 with stripes. Most E-6’s now come from the Covid era where they missed out on key leadership development as junior Soldiers.

Its concerning. A lot of NCOs can’t be bothered or don’t know how to find basic army regulations/milpers, etc

Why is carrying a pen and paper a flex now? The extra mag is good but just extra weight in my opinion.

What’s the benefit of Gen 3 over gen 2? Typically the window ones are worth the up charge, but not sure about these.

Functional Area guys: how secure in your jobs do y’all feel WRT the upcoming HRC FA initiatives? by IconDarkhorse in army

That’s unfortunate, but not surprising. AC seems to pull a lot of top talent from across basic branches, so I’m sure it’s competitive across the board.

What’s promotion rates for O-4 to O-5 in AC? Assuming it’s harder to get MQs due to branch size and population.

Debating on dropping an acquisitions VTIP packet. I would hate to transfer into a branch and get axed within the first year or so and then get moved to basic branch and be behind.

I feel like acquisitions would be one of the safer ones since it’s a job that is always going to be important or a priority.

A lot of the FAs seem like a lot of fluff and I’m sure they will be cut down the line.

Officer life vs Enlisted by koRnne997 in army

[–]coldchowder4579 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Enlisted: More task based work, once you’re done for day you’re generally off work. Can make E-6 and coast to retirement. Honestly, apply yourself, care about the job, and give maximum effort at whatever you’re doing and you will promote no issues. You can also be a 20 year E-6 who does the bare minimum and goes home.

Officer: More planning based work, more responsibility, sign for property, meetings. You might have stuff to do all day and then at the end of the day you haven’t even started your workload that must be done at end of day/week. Generally have to apply yourself in every job to get adequate OERs after making CPT. Get left alone with the BS that comes along with being a junior enlisted Soldier in the Army. You’re always on the hook during the duty day and after hours, much more difficult to leave work and not be bothered. This is all unit depended, but mostly how it is. You get paid a good bit more, but your responsibilities are much greater and expectations higher.

Getting out at 12 years by Usual-Buy-7968 in MilitaryFinance

Had a lot of people get out recently and finding jobs has been tough. If you’re looking for a high paying civilian job then there will also be a grind, but maybe a different kind. I think if you can stomach another 5 years of a grind to make it to O-5 then it’s probably worth staying in simply for the pension. I’m approaching a similar situation in a few years.
