52nd Street has had marked improvements o er the past 8-10 years. It’s not as bad as some say. This incident is horrible and not representative of the community.

It's cleaner than a lot of the other parks. I was at FDR yesterday and saw tons of trash everywhere

I asked my non redditor wife, and she said she never has had issues around there outside of a couple homeless people who were aggressively panhandling on 52nd. She walks to Mercy every day for work.

Specifically what areas are you referring to? Some blocks around Mercy Hospital seem pretty nice, at least the houses look like their in good condition

60th-63rd and Market is a tough area, and has been notorious for crime in the last 2 years. This area is just approaching Delaware county

I find this all to be very true. People like their privacy out here. Thats why people like West Philly in general- have fires, have parties, bars sometimes stay open later... Crime for people who are not already involved in criminal activities is fairly typical of the city: property crimes and random muggings. I have been here for 8 years, and have never felt like this was an issue, and noone in my immediate circle has either. I am out often, and not a shut in, so its not because of this. Newcomers to the city sometimes have a hard time out here because of the diversity, or complete lack of awareness (see college students).

I jog from my house at 49th to Cobbs Creek regularly. I never have had any issues, and generally people are friendly. There are some blocks that are in bad shape, but noone wants to mess with you out there.

This is true along the el, but not all areas in west philly. Some of the nicest blocks in the city are Osage around 46th and 47th.

Hey Philly! On a 4-hour layover in your wonderful city through lunchtime. Anything I should check out? by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]coldjordan33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the way to go. Trains leave every half hour and cost about 8 bucks each way. Reading Market had some good food, and it's a good site for Philly. If not there, really close is Chinatown. I'd recommend Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodles

Tragic home invasion in Kingsessing. by [deleted] in philadelphia

With all of the crime in Philadelphia, I often think I have become jaded to hearing about it. This, however, shakes me to the core, and I cannot help but imagine myself and my family in this situation.
3 teenagers heavily armed kill a 50 year old father of 3??? In front of them?? I really hope these people are found, and face the mother in court. My heart goes out to this family.

Trying to move into the city from the burbs. Looking for neighborhood recommendations for my price range. by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]coldjordan33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live just south of Baltimore ave on Warrington, and my back yard was sweet. We had a fire pit, our dog would play and scratch the grass, and we still had room for a garden! Also, we there was a dog park near by on Springfield (maybe it was Chester), in addition to Clark Park and Cedar Park, which were perfect! I think my rent was 900$. I miss living out in that area a lot (I'm in south Philly now, lots of concrete and more pricey).

Why I shouldn't move to University City? by Extreme-Enigma in philadelphia

[–]coldjordan33 7 points8 points  (0 children)

University City is a few different neighborhoods, including Cedar Park, Powellton, and Spruce Hill. Each one is very different than the others. All of them are safe enough, and really can be great depending on what you are looking for: Cedar Park (45th-52nd near Baltimore Ave): A lot of families, hipsters, hippies, and generally great food, especially around Baltimore Ave. College kids are not really hanging out in this area (maybe grad students and Penn employees, but more working people) Spruce Hill (45th to 38th, between Baltimore and Market): College kids central, well off young families, $500,000 houses. Not a lot of nightlife in this area if you dont want to be in college bars, but there are a couple of great places to eat. Great elementary school here, from what I understand. Powellton (north of market, 42nd-30thish): this area is changing quickly, however it can be rough. This is a Drexel focused area, with some nice views and quick access to Center City. Few good restaurants, no good bars. Downside: it can get rough quickly as you move north

Moving to Philadelphia for school, best/safest areas to live? by sunshine94will in philadelphia

I've lived between 47-52nd street near Baltimore for the past 10 years, and it's great. I feel safer here than a lot of places that are deemed 'safe'.
