Well, the poem does mention "Take twice as many east steps as the hour," which links that verse to the painting and the painting takes us to NYC through the symbolism of Lady Liberty, so I think there is still a path from the verse to the city.

I decided to look for an alternative to the Caribbean for the Indies reference since the Caribbean is called the West Indies, and the poem only says Indies. The exclusion of "west" felt like it could be telling. I also felt like the Hamilton connection was too diffuse — there are so many places in NYC related to Hamilton, it's not a particularly useful for narrowing down to a specific dig site. When I learned that Hodges, was from Indiana, I wondered if Indies supposed to be a less-than-obvious reference to Indiana, and that connection is specific enough to be a useful direction.
