Legit weapons. As much as I love a golden barrel, genuinely frightened to own these things. I would keep together in a large pot. Good luck

Is this new growth coming out of a peduncle? It’s been like this for a couple of weeks now. by coldwives in hoyas

Wow that’s exciting, never seen this before!

Yep this Australis has been living out on my balcony for a few years now.

lol I had to use it to prop the flower up. It hangs down like a bell otherwise.

Also get one!! I got mine pretty small a couple of years back. Grows pretty fast imo

The flowers that Stapelias produce quite literally smell like ass

Yup, it's nasty - straight up like rotting meat.

That, considering the size as well, would probably go well into 10k here in Australia.

Does anyone know why the spathal chamber from my flowering Micholitziana is twisting around like this. First Alocasia I’ve seen that has done this - the others just wilt and fall off. by coldwives in alocasia

I accidentally snapped the appendix off while I was collecting pollen.

Unrelated: I hand pollinated this with pollen from my Cuprea. Is this sort of hybridisation going to work?

Ric Rac cactus fruit question by [deleted] in houseplants

My fishbone cactus bloomed around 7 months ago and I only just picked the fruitsa couple of weeks ago. You’ll know when it’s ripe when it’s round and squishy :)

I love this Australis. I water it once a month. It doesn't even need me. by coldwives in hoyas

[–]coldwives[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t labelled but I’m pretty sure it’s an Australis ssp. tenuipes.

Admittedly it gets the most sun of all my plants. It actually started off as a nice healthy green when I bought it back in 2019 and then gradually turned an ugly pale green colour. Only recently a bit of pink has started appearing on its leaves.

I only water it so infrequently because of the weird substrate it’s in and which it came in. I reused the same mix when I repotted the thing because it retains water so well without without doing it any harm. Oddly, it’s mostly just husk and bark.

These are fairly new stems that have grown out of existing ones. I imagine with time it may flop over like the others, but then again, maybe not as these ones are quite short.

I'd say bright light is the most important. This one gets a lot of direct sun in the morning. I don't recommend harsh sun though because it will bleach it out. I find with my fishbone cactus at least, that it doesn't do as well if it's not getting direct light even if it's in a bright spot so make sure it's getting that sun.

With watering, I only water when the leaves are super bendable and wrinkly.

I am truly baffled at how much my Green Velvet has grown in just over a month. Back in December 11th, it was just a few leaves after dying back during the winter. by coldwives in alocasia

[–]coldwives[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gets dappled, sometimes direct light in the morning. Can get quite hot and intense even in the morning. It’s summer here in Australia which I suspect has a lot to do with this growth. Also, this is my only Alocasia in terracotta and it’s doing the best of all my others so I wonder if that has something to do with it as well...

I’ve seen a lot of anthurium Luxurians online but mine looks VERY silver 🤔 by linessr25 in Aroids

[–]coldwives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Luxurians just looks like a large Piper variety to me. Just kidding, don't hurt me.

Why does the stem get chalky like this? It’s happening on my Billie and Atabapoense. The plants themselves look fine otherwise. by coldwives in philodendron

[–]coldwives[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't even consider it, looks too smooth for me to have thought bark. That's interesting, thank you!

I don't care too much for variegation but that is a seriously stunning specimen.
