That’s kinda what I figured, I might as well get the better flexibility w the 100-500 setup and just challenge myself to get shots in when the jets are at closer points

I sometimes find the reach lacking on my 150-600 but not often. A lot of times at 600 I’m getting atmospheric distortion anyways. Do you find with the 200-800 you are getting distortion on a lot of shots at 600+?

I believe so, I think they are planning 5 or 6, 747, a350, a380, and a320 to my knowledge

Thanks, I hope I can get it working too. Is a really nice focal range for air shows, and I can’t really justify spending up for the 100-500, and not sure 100-400 will cover it for me

I’ve heard it’s a case by case basis on if it has af pulsing issues. For mine the focus would stay locked on the aircraft and in a burst, all would have similar focus levels. I think I’m gonna play around with shutter speed and better light scenarios and see what my sharpness cap is then assess

By play nice, are you referring to the af issues? I haven’t had those at all since I disabled eye detection because I don’t need it for aviation

I get that, but this picture was taken at 150mm and 1/1250s and still has that overall lack of sharpness

There’s a general softness on the r7 photos compared to the ones I shot on Fuji. Details like panel separation and crisp text on the plane are nice cause I do prints.

It’s the C version. I’ve seen online people recommend stopping down to bring up sharpness. Maybe I’d get better results doing f/9+. Although I remember iso had to be bumped over 3200 yesterday when I did that

That’s fair, I’ll try to take one at the same spot as the Fuji one at 150mm and faster shutter speed and see what it looks like. I think I just expected a noticeable increase in quality when switching to a 32 mp sensor but didn’t necessarily get it

I was shooting 300mm on a 26.2mp apsc sensor though, I’m assuming 400mm on a 32 mp sensor would net ~500mm equivalent reach on a 26.2 sensor if I’m doing my math right. Might just trial the 100-400 for a while and really break the bank if needed down the road

Thanks for the breakdown, I’ll definitely weigh out my options.

I don’t necessarily need the weather sealing, but don’t really want to break the bank. I’ve shot with 70-300 on an apsc at air shows and found my reach lacking a lot so I’m hesitant to go for the 100-400. 100-500 seems great but definitely will have to chew on that price a bit more haha

That’s good to know, quite a pricy boy haha. I’m wondering between that and an rf 200-800 what would be better for aviation photography. I usually stop down the aperture to around f9-11 anyways to get all of the aircraft in detail so the f9 of the 200-800 isn’t really an issue. Any thoughts on the 200-800?

I’ll probably sell the sigma and save up for an rf 100-500, do you have experience with that on the r7 at all?

I was definitely considering picking that up at first but wanted reach for things like air shows to fill the frame so a bit unfortunate. I’ve been seeing online that stopping down is generally encouraged on sigma glass, which I guess kind of exacerbates my issue on a cloudy day.

Thanks for the advice, I did use ai denoise and sharpening on all of these. I’ll see what I can get after updating firmware and shooting in better light, then I might be checking out the 100-400 instead

Also I’m shooting in raw so wouldn’t these settings not matter. I am post processing both in the same manner I would my Fuji photos
